You shouldn't be driving to the office when there will be a red weather warning

mandydandy · 18/10/2023 16:29

We are in the north east of Scotland. Tomorrow is supposed to be an Amber weather warning for wind and rain most of the day. Later it will apparently be even worse and turning to a red weather warning.
I suggested to my DH that he should maybe work from home tomorrow.
However, his bosses have said they need everyone in the office for a big project. Not likely to get home before the weather warning goes red either.
DH has to drive a pretty awful road to get home. Any other routes would have even more trees and are really twisty.
Surely they should work from home if the weather is going to be that bad?

Totally off topic sorry but just curious - hockerill @pollyglot ??

I can neither confirm nor deny, Belle.
Just say no leader worthy of respect would do this to his staff and then leave them to sort out their lives, while he hunkers down in his cosy billet. To play fast and loose with people's safety and comfort is utterly despicable.

@Gottaworkwhatever I also do a job I have to be physically present for and involves emergency work. I understand your frustration. That said neither you nor I benefit from people who could usefully WFH being forced into the office when conditions are dangerous. In fact I'd go so far as to say I'd feel safer travelling on the roads in dangerous conditions knowing that as many as possible were keeping off them and out of my way.

I agree wholeheartedly.
I think it’s more the frustration of the fact that we as individuals simply don’t matter. Yet without us, those services which we all need, can’t function. Why is my life and time less valuable than someone else’s?

Cece92 · 18/10/2023 21:47

I am central Scotland OP and we have yellow weather warnings which is bad enough. The last red warning was beast from the east. We all got sent home then. I think if your hubby can wfh he absolutely should be. His bosses are twats xxx

Tryingmybestadhd · 18/10/2023 21:55

To those who are essential workers , doctors , nurses , carers etc . You might think people are nit thankful but we are . And honestly I do t expect miracles , I expect nhs to maintain emergency care but I would not begrudge a canceled planed procedure or a canceled appointment. Keep yourselfs safe

Silvers11 · 18/10/2023 22:17

@mandydandy - so glad your OH isn't going into work tomorrow. His Boss sounds like a complete tosser. Stay safe

PinkyFlamingo · 18/10/2023 19:41

It's a red weather warning!

The red warning is for rain. Amber for wind.

Moved the bins round to the garage. My mum is in a real flood risk area. They have flooded several times so I'm away to help them move as much as they can to the upstairs.
The council has delivered sandbags.
The cats are being annoying because they want out but I want to keep them in.
DH has told his boss that either he works from home tomorrow or he will take a days holiday. He is supposed to be off next week anyway so it would just be moving things forward.
I'm hoping that the storm quickly moves out to sea.
Hopefully it won't be as bad for Laurencekirk as predicted.

@mandydandy please don’t rely on sandbags at your mum’s house. They filter the flood water but little else, and can lead to a false sense of security. Great that you’re moving stuff upstairs. If your mum gets flooding through a downstairs loo the sandbags can be useful there (block the loo and weigh the seat down). For furniture you can use things like welly boots on the legs, or large saucepans to lift it off the floor. Good luck, I really hope it’s not as bad as the forecast.

It's not but emergency services would be a hell of a lot busier if people ignored it.

The nature of the work is essential the advice is stay at home unless essential.
The OPs DH job can be done remotely, yours (unless doing telephone consultation follow ups) can't be. However if you can't get to work because of flooding then nobody would say well I think you should drive through that 6ft of water regardless! They will cancel and rearrange them. If your shift ends and you can't get home then see if there is hospital accommodation that you can crash in. No it's not ideal but if you can't get back then you can't get back.

If disillusioned have you thought of retraining becoming a lecturer for instance?

Fusterclucked · 18/10/2023 22:31

Check police Scotland Facebook page.
they say not to travel or use roads at all if in the red zone.

MarchHare22 · 18/10/2023 22:41

Glad he isn’t going, we’re Fife and were a few mile from the eye for the storm in storm Arwen (that was a red warning for us). It was terrifying. The kids (and I don’t say this glibly) I think have some kind of traumatic stress from it, stay still talk about it to this day and they were just three and four and a half so tiny really, in fact two days ago they were splashing each other at swimming calling it ‘storm Arwen’.

Gottaworkwhatever · 18/10/2023 23:11

@Scottishskifun I need to drive a fair distance, leave my children with childcare( they will be scared) there are some doctors who are nearer, and would adjust. The powers that be won’t rearrange.
I do it because I love my patients.
I think this weekend will push me out of my job. I will probably need to stay over, there probably won’t be accommodation. I will start looking for other employment. As for lecturing, I’m not sure I could live with myself encouraging youngsters into this….

I’m pretty sure I got ptsd from storm Arwen , my newborn was just 2 weeks old , my autistic teen was so distressed in fear and then without power for days , the house was freezing and I was petrified the baby wasn’t going to be ok . My now middle child still speak about the time “ mum cried so much in front of us , it was the worst time “ .
I’m in the red warning zone and honestly it’s 3 am and I haven’t been able to sleep yet . . I’m so anxious 😭

mandydandy · 19/10/2023 12:06

Powercuts and trees down already nearby and it isn't even the red warning yet. I'm charging all battery packs and devices. We have working batteries in the torches and spare batteries looked out. Blankets etc all ready too. I really hope we don't need them.
Dh is in teams meetings most of the day so I'm trying to keep the kids downstairs away from him.
The wind is loud already.

Everyone in Brechin are now being asked to evacuate completely. Scary times.

This is pretty scary tbh. The worst hasn't even arrived yet, right?

mandydandy · 19/10/2023 13:00

Our fence panels have all gone flying. Some got wedged in the neighbours garden. We have been out trying to rescue them but ended up just breaking them up so that they didn't kill anyone. Massive bits of wood with rusty nails wouldn't be pleasant. We have acquired a new kids playhouse. Not sure where from. It landed in our garden.

Oh god, that sounds expensive! Stay safe!!! I hope it all calms down soon.

@EvilElsa it will be expensive but nothing we can do about it right now.

Apparently just those near the Esk but still scary!

verdantverdure · 19/10/2023 13:18

Our friends in New York were still expected to go in during the recent floods.

Sometimes you have to tell an employer "no" because "don't be a twat" might offend.

Red warnings are there for a reason.

NoAprilFool · 19/10/2023 14:30

I’m meant to be driving from Glasgow to Aberdeenshire tomorrow to visit a sick relative. I think it would be crazy to go ahead but getting pressure from family.

I would absolutely not be travelling up here if I were you. Even if the wind and rain does die down a little, there will still be loads of flooding. The weather warnings are in place until Saturday. It is so wild out there right now.

Do not do this.
Police Scotland are telling people not to go out of their houses at all unless it's absolutely essential.

DH and I got caught in the Amber Warning in Argyll a couple of weeks ago and it was terrifying. People were airlifted to safety. A Red Warning is much more dangerous.

The A816 road in Argyll is still closed after the landslides on 7th October.
