You shouldn't be driving to the office when there will be a red weather warning

We are in the north east of Scotland. Tomorrow is supposed to be an Amber weather warning for wind and rain most of the day. Later it will apparently be even worse and turning to a red weather warning.
I suggested to my DH that he should maybe work from home tomorrow.
However, his bosses have said they need everyone in the office for a big project. Not likely to get home before the weather warning goes red either.
DH has to drive a pretty awful road to get home. Any other routes would have even more trees and are really twisty.
Surely they should work from home if the weather is going to be that bad?

A red warning is rare and means a threat to life!

The wind warning is amber, the red warning is for rain ( and therefore flood impacts)

Yes, and in this case, there is a threat to life from floods.

Actually it seems the wind is yellow now which is good news for those trees with leaves on still, as they’re less likely to come down. But red for rain still. Good luck all.

I’m also in the NE Scotland and its now a Red warning. I’ll be out driving tomorrow for work. Don’t have a choice. Drive to the conditions and stay safe

Police Scotland are telling everybody to stay inside their homes.
There is a threat to life with a Red Warning.

GUARDIAN1 · 19/10/2023 19:44

Definitely should stay home. Red warnings aren't given out lightly.

linsey2581 · 19/10/2023 19:50

@TheShellBeach I know but I’m a community nurse so needs must.

coffeorbust · 19/10/2023 19:50

It's not to bad here in central Scotland so husband is insisting he's driving to Aberdeen tomorrow for work, he's a contractor. He's Leaving at 6 am. I'm really scared for him and am actually thinking of packing a bag and going with him so that I can try and reason with him into turning back if it gets too dicey. Honestly, what is it with men? You can't conquer the weather Kev (not his name)

He is risking his life.

From the Met Office
Red Warning: Dangerous weather is expected and, if you haven’t already done so, you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the severe weather. It is very likely that there will be a risk to life, with substantial disruption to travel, energy supplies and possibly widespread damage to property and infrastructure. You should avoid travelling, where possible, and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities.

JazzTheDog · 19/10/2023 19:57

Also NE Scotland (Buchan) and we're fairly being battered. Worked from home today which was pointless as we had no power for a lot of it (mind you neither did our office).

It's back on for now. Lots and lots of flooding around but thankfully we're at the top of a brae. The wind is very reminiscent of Arwen, dreading assessing damage in the morning.

Fluff3 · 19/10/2023 19:59

The thing is, a lot of people cant work from home and have no choice but to go to work, nhs staff, police, fire service etc. If you can work from home, I dont think people realie how lucky you are.

Red warning here last year a couple bi a got knocked over.

From what I understand the red warning was for rain, not wind

That's why the emergency services want as many people at home as possible - because they know they'll be working, they know they'll be stretched, and they really could do without having to rescue people who needn't be out at all.

So if you're emergency services, essential infrastructure, essential health and some social care (for those who really cannot cope at all without - though of course in Beast from the East even some of those could not be reached) or vets and farmers attending livestock (and they often have rugged vehicles available), then you might have to be on the roads. And might end up having to be rescued. But at least that's trying to get to the smallest number.

I just hope no-one tries to drive through floods. News outlets often carry pix of that to illustrate the story, but it's crazily dangerous and I wish they didn't show it ever

coffeorbust · 19/10/2023 20:26

That actually makes me feel a bit better. If the red warning is for rain and flooding then he'll probably have to turn back. I'd be way more worried about windy weather and trees falling down. He's a trooper tbh.

DH and I were caught up in the floods in Argyll a few days ago and they were terrifying.
People had to be airlifted out.

ListenLinda · 19/10/2023 20:29

Sadly the storm has already claimed a life today.
if you don’t need to go out, stay at home.
This is not regular autumnal weather.

Oh no
Do you know where?

Sawaranga · 19/10/2023 20:32

@coffeorbust he should not be driving to Aberdeen tomorrow.

As I said up thread my family member goes out in weather like this to get the power back on. Your husband should be off the roads.

freetheunicorn1 · 19/10/2023 20:35

Water of Lee at Glenesk

Edited

Ii know this and have added my tuppenceworth but apparently someone is driving down from Inverness and others are driving up from England. No one is at all concerned about the weather

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 19/10/2023 20:51

@coffeorbust seriously? Have none of them read any news channels or consulted a weather forecast? It beggars belief.

Sawaranga · 19/10/2023 20:54

It's irrelevant, they're all a bunch of idiots then.

It's very selfish. The emergency services in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will have enough to do tomorrow.
