Is there anyone who WON’T be receiving an inheritance?

I’m not sure if it’s just me but sometimes I read posts and feel so out of touch! It seems like everyone and their dog on MN will receive an inheritance when a family member passes away.

Not one person in my family has a mortgage or owns their home outright. Those of pension age don’t have any pension savings saved up and rely on state pension (not too sure if that’s the correct wording as I’m not 100% on how it all works.) No one has any savings that they’ll pass on to their children/grandchildren/nieces & nephews etc.

I actually saw a comment on a thread that said, ‘can you ask your parents for an early payment that can just be taken out of your inheritance?’ Not everyone gets inheritance! Surely I can’t be the only one?

Just to add, this isn’t a post to say ‘oh boohoo look at me, I won’t receive anything when a family member passes away.’ It’s more a post to see if there’s other people on MN that have a similar family set up to mine!

Me!

Ihatemondays1962 · 16/10/2023 20:26

I am in the same boat. I suppose I just don't really think about it as I have known it would always be the case.

squidnames · 16/10/2023 20:26

Me :(

Finteq · 16/10/2023 20:27

Yeah

It all went to my brother- not bitter me

Not me- raised by a young teenage mum on benefits who went onto have more children and never worked in her life.
The only money I have is the money I’ve earned and saved myself, hopefully I can save enough for my 3 children to have money when they are older so they never will know what I feels like to grow up with nothing and struggle.

Thursa · 16/10/2023 20:28

My parents had nothing to leave, they didn’t even have insurance to cover the funeral costs.

Magenta65 · 16/10/2023 20:28

I think it’s a mixed bag. My DP will have no inheritance whereas I will but there’s nothing available until my family pass on (no lumps sums going free) And if there’s nothing left then so be it it means they lived well. I think it’s more common for most people to get some kind of inheritance these days due to home ownerships/pensions and life insurance versus previous generations inheritance. But I don’t think it’s to the extent MN makes out. Most people don’t have lump sums of cash going begging for an ‘early inheritance’

Not expecting anything here either. And happy with that, would rather mum and dad enjoy while they’re still here

cryinglaughing · 16/10/2023 20:29

Me.
My Mum & Dad haven’t got 2 pennies to rub together and have nothing to show for their once profligacy.
It doesn't bother me in the slightest but it dies sadden me that they live hand to mouth. If my father had been mire astute, and my mother more aware, they could have a great lifestyle.

RoomTetris · 16/10/2023 20:29

Me! I will almost certainly be paying the funeral costs for my parents too, my family are poor poor and I'm the only one not on minimum wage/benefits.

I don't think I'm unusual outside of MN

WhatAPalaverer · 16/10/2023 20:30

Those of us with parents who own houses may well not see a penny after care costs are paid- the days of passing on enough to buy a house are gone for most.

Coldinscotland · 16/10/2023 20:30

When my dgm died she left it all to 1 of her dd's.. Not my dm. That dd left everything to her carer... My dm is skint. Df won Big Money. His dw has made sure I will never get any... I have healthy dc and a great dh... Money isn't everything..

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/10/2023 20:30

My parents think I will but I can honestly see it going on care fees.

My mum thinks she’s live with us but I honestly won’t cope. Besides, she’ll be happier in a care home with other people to hang out with.

I fully expect her house to find care fees.

Squirrelsnut · 16/10/2023 20:31

I might get something if Dad doesn't need a care home, otherwise I'll get nothing. It's not my money and I'd far rather he enjoyed his life.

Objectrelations · 16/10/2023 20:31

Me - my mum has nothing and my dad married a much younger woman and they favour her child with him over me

kingkongs · 16/10/2023 20:31

If I do it won't be much! DF doesn't have a house to sell so it'll be whatever savings he has left, split between me and two siblings.

Brainfogmcfogface · 16/10/2023 20:33

Me, same no one has a penny to their name in my family, Including myself, my friends are of an age where grandparents are passing away and leaving them money, so they’re able to live better lives, I’m so jealous, not a pot to piss in and sadly the cycle will continue with my kids, I won’t be able to give them anything either.

Plankingplanks · 16/10/2023 20:33

I will inherit a lifetime of memories provided by my parents, and possibly every drawing/school work I did from the moment I went to school to leaving home. 😂

Parents live well but did equity release and are enjoying their retirements. Good on them I say.

DH's mum will probably outlive him, only 15 when she had him.

We aren't counting on any outside help.

Poontangle · 16/10/2023 20:33

Me! Everything I have - including my pension pot and my mortgage free house - I've earned myself. Pretty proud of myself, tbh. My contemporaries who had richer parents have been lazier and less successful.

poorchurchmouse · 16/10/2023 20:34

Me. Once the funeral costs are paid there might possibly be enough for me and my sister to each have a modest holiday, but certainly no more than that. That’s fine, I earn a good living.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/10/2023 20:36

Me! My dad rents and hasn't got a pot to piss in. Mr Monkey's dad died five years ago and was living in a council flat having gambled most of his away (his mum didnleave a fairly sunstantial life insurance payout but it was all left to one brother - a source of considerable family tensions to this day).

I have a lot of friends who have parents who own houses in the SE. I expect over the next decade or so our financial fortunes to diverge as they could be in line for inheritances of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Before I get too woe is me - I inherited a few pieces of nice jewellery from my mum and a total of £8k from two grandparents which helped with house buying costs (stamp duty and coveyancing fees). So better off than many.

Dispairrepair · 16/10/2023 20:37

My dh.
His parents are very comfortably off but I don't think they will leave him anything as he can't speak to them any longer.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/10/2023 20:38

You never know. Many people who think they will, won't. Care home fees.

And I inherited (not a huge amount) from a step-great-uncle (is probably closest description of the relationship). I had never met him, didn't know he existed and am not related to him by birth. But he had no family himself and believed that money should go to the closest approximation of family, which is what I was. I wish I'd known while he was alive as I would have contacted him.

addictedtotheflats · 16/10/2023 20:38

Depends if my DM will need care paying for.. If not there will be some money in the pot but I'm certainly not banking on it

Terraria · 16/10/2023 20:38

Me! None from my DH side too. I am proud to have paid off our mortgage recently but we won't have much to leave for our 3 children, they will have to work really hard like us... no early retirement!
