What is the weirdest thing that bugs people on MN?

I remember a poster saying that it really stressed her out to see a woman outside the house with wet hair as no one should be too busy to blow dry their hair. This was weird to me because I have shoulder length hair and never blow dry it.

What about you?

More than outfits for weddings - weddings in general

It's not hatred it's justified bitterness to a group of people who are noticeably unkind and uncaring towards Millennials and younger people.

Except when they are handing over deposits to them and providing free childcare.

It's amazing how many people on here utterly hate landlords. All landlords, even those who look after their properties and do their best to keep tenants happy.

Conversely it’s funny how many of the world’s best and most benevolent landlords, doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, have all ended up here on Mumsnet.

SoShallINever · 19/10/2023 10:01

All the people who claim that something makes their teeth itch. Yuk.
Also the casual use of disablist slurs, I see "Cretin" used on here a lot.
Victim blaming still goes on as well, all those young women out and about in tight fitted shorts, asking for trouble.

Absolutely. They are either mostly from London, or for some reason are total liars! I saw that thread and got out of there fast!
I'm north west and have a great life. Lovely house and comfortable. But according to lots on MN I must hardly have a pot to piss in! But maybe that's the difference, where I'm from we don't look down at people earning less, because in an industrial town, the majority are earning similar to each other. And if you have 'done well' you wouldn't look down, because you'd be looking at your own parents and family.
I pointed out that not all homes are in London on another thread, because somebody was saying most pensioners are very well off because of their property value. And was told that my parents must have spent all their wages on scratch cards, booze and whippets.
It's like another world sometimes and I wonder 'is it me?' It's nice to know there are a few more Northerners around thinking the same thing!

Yep. Even in London/South most people can’t be earning over £65k based on the portion of the population earning that much. I’m also northern and OH and I are under that (I’m a bit debatable due to an unusually generous pension arrangement but still not miles off that even taking pension into account). I think we are exceedingly fortunate to have the level of income we do and that it’s really weird more people with higher incomes don’t realise how well off they are relative to the overall population. It also strikes me as a miserable existence constantly begrudging what you don’t have.

I report the use of cretin, moron etc if I see them, MN always removes them.

But this relies on a prejudice. Why is any more acceptable than the lamentable older types who famously sneer at all young people for their avocados, coffees and smartphones? Being bitter to an entire generation because of an experience of some of it isn't very bright, or productive; and there is a lot of hatred and ageism on MN.

The weirdest things people on MN seem to be so against, for me, are:

  • landlords - they ALL are greedy horrible humans who dare to have chosen renting out properties for a living.
  • private schools - they should not exist, all children should go to state schools (to my foreign ears this REALLY sounds like 1970 URSS!)
  • relationships - no matter the gravity of the problem, the partner has to get ridden of. I still haven't figured out if there is a disproportional amount of severely dysfunctional couples on MN or it's just a matter of saying but not doing it, else everyone in real life would be single I guess?
  • having children past your thirties - past 35 you look like a grandma, and it's so selfish to even consider it.
  • opening the door - it was just pure disbelief for me to realize that people might chose not to open the door if someone is knocking/ringing the bell, during the day, in no suspicious circumstances or no other specific issues.

This is hardly a 'weird' thing, though. Most people can see how cramped people are in economy seating, much more so than was common in the days when reclining airline seats were invented. It is obvious that reclining your seat is going to affect the person behind you in a negative way, so most people don't recline unless it is a night flight. Why is it 'weird' to be disgusted at someone who recognises that making this choice will make the person behind them more uncomfortable, yet chooses to do it anyway (unless late at night when everyone is reclined)?

Maybe reconsider your views here.

I haven't flown long haul since 2018 but I am not sure how people become miraculously less cramped at night, and I don't recognise your picture of "most" people not reclining their seats. Surely the issue is with airlines rather than individuals?

What colour to wear to a wedding (and funeral actually)

I am not sure that's specific to MN, people do care about the etiquette at weddings and funerals.

I think it's an MN thing.

Obviously sober colours to a funeral unless the family have said otherwise. Don't look celebratory unless it's a celebration of someone's life.

But the not wearing white to a wedding thing is just weird, when so many shops sell white/beige dresses/outfits for the mum of the bride etc. If it was such a faux pas they wouldn't be selling them. Obviously turning up in a wedding dress when you are not the bride is odd, but wearing an obviously not-bridal gown which happens to be a light colour, is not.

  1. Everybody reclines on an overnight flight. That's why the cramping is not the same as in the day. When you yourself are reclined, the seat in front of you reclining isn't an issue.
  2. You don't 'recognise' the picture that most people don't recline their seats during the day? Then you haven't been on many flights. I fly long-haul monthly, and I assure you this is the case. It is rare to see someone so inconsiderate that they recline in the daytime. On overnight flights, the lights go off and most people recline. Then go upright again when breakfast is served and stay that way.

Even worse were Little Prince/Princess on board with the appropriate sickly colour. Actually I've not seen as many in the last few years.

Going out with wet hair doesn’t stress me out but yeah I agree, it looks bone idle. If your hair looks better when left to dry naturally, get up and wash it earlier.

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Sometimes my hair’s still wet when I head to my bone idle 12 hr shift in which I resuscitate people and I won’t get to eat drink or wee.

What a lazy bitch.

Bone idle 😂😂😂😂😂

Me too! Usually something fairly mindless like location location, I couldn't watch line of duty or anything too complicated while ironing!

My inlaws (now deceased) were great. DH felt the same about my DP.

People saying 'reader' in their posts . Eg I just read a thread where someone said her husband wants her to draw or paint a picture for his brother's birthday, and she said 'reader, I can neither draw nor paint.' Really jars me. Angry

Also, it seems like the OP, and some of the people responding to her, think it's hilarious what she said. I'm just like 😕

MoonWoman69 · 05/03/2024 11:59

@WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff I'm getting a Yorkshire vibe from you?! Please tell me I'm right?! 🤣

Mine is people posting on AIBU wanting "honest" answers, then arguing with people that disagree with them! If you don't want to be told that you're in the wrong, don't bloody ask!!! 🤣

@EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon

I need to know the back story of your name! 😂

I keep saying it out loud.

Apologies, I've only just seen this now the thread has bounced back up! 😄

If you're still on the thread, it's the title of a song (or maybe I should say piece of music, as it has no lyrics) by Boards of Canada who I'm a big fan of. No idea how they came up with the title, but I like it. 🙂

Barbecue smoke from neighbours gardens. People in real life can't seriously be bothered by this

In the summer i actually had a woman halfway up the street so i would say approx 15 doors up who actually tried to complain about us having a bbq in our garden she even tried to report us to the inspectors that come around, the same inspectors who said they wished they could stop and have some themselves bizzare

People getting angry about a poster saying that they do their husband's/partner's/children over 18's laundry. By this,I mean the act of loading up the machine and setting it going, not the sorting it out afterwards, ironing it, putting it away etc. I mean seriously,do households really do each person's laundry separately? As a previous poster said, don't households work better as a team?

I dont understand it either my son is in the military and is more than capable of doing his own washing but its so nice when he comes home and i see all his kit by the washing machine. I am part of a mums group on fb and its a running joke on there with our kids being on leave with pics of their laundry. It means we have them home for a while and we love it
