I would like to buy a bigger house in a few years time but it would mean getting a bigger mortgage. Got me thinking what is the norm?

I’ll go first
39 years old
£3000 joint salary
£250k mortgage

£610k mortgage
joint monthly net approx £15k

When we bought 5 years ago it was around 7k net / month joint income, and 408k mortgage

I do feel like no mortgage people are just replying to be smug...

35 yo and DP is 41. Joint mortgage of over £400k and joint income of about 7k pcm. About to move somewhere cheaper and hoping to shave at least £100k off our mortgage, but we'll see!

It would be an inaccurate picture if noone who has paid off their mortgage replied.

55
around £3000 joint net monthly (because we are paying a lot into pensions right now)
£0 smug mortgage (on a modest house, in a cheap area which is valued at a fraction of some of the mortgages on this thread)

I agree that most posters on here say they earn way more than the average wage. I don't even earn enough to pay tax, and DH is semi retired, so we aren't high earners, and seem quite poverty stricken compared to most on here.

TheGoogleMum · 14/10/2023 00:14

Woah lots of big salaries on here.
Age: 35
Household monthly income: approx 3600 I think
Mortgage: 200k

Universalsnail · 14/10/2023 00:18

36 £1600 a month ish. Mortgage is £0.

I own half the house and my ex the other. House is teeny teeny tiny though and barely fits me and the kids in (3 in one room box room for me) but atleast I don't have to worry about mortgage payments otherwise I'd be in a real financial struggle due to the low income. Couldn't afford a bigger house that actually fits us in with the money we had in equity and noone would give me a mortgage so it would have been rent for loads more money otherwise.

Bornonsunday · 14/10/2023 00:18

Did you get advice? You might be entitled to some of his pension.
