Fucking hell is anyone broke with no mortgage (because I’m not a homeowner) on MN or is it just me😬

I am broke with a mortgage at the age of 50. I am quite amazed at the salaries being quoted on here when the average salary nationally is between £20k and £35k depending on your age.

Miamisun · 14/10/2023 08:09

There will be loads! But they would probably answer a thread about rent vs income instead whereas homeowners wouldn't 🤷🏻‍♀️ Mumsnet is skewed towards higher earners as well I think

ThreeRingCircus · 14/10/2023 08:19

Ages 35 and 38
Joint income of approx £120k
£240k left on the mortgage (approx half of house's value)

That feels about right for us but we're both quite risk averse. We keep toying with the idea of moving somewhere a lot cheaper (currently in Berkshire) and being almost mortgage free.

Alarae · 14/10/2023 08:21

30
Joint net: £5.5k ish
Mortgage: £245k

It's projected to be paid off in 20 years, so that's alright. Hopefully if rates come down a bit more when we come to remortgage in 2025 we can overpay more to get the term down.

It's unlikely we will move from this house unless we get a lottery win or something.

GogoGobo · 14/10/2023 08:22

Income varies because we are self employed - average take home about £10 k net.
mortgage still has £445,000 outstanding (originally £629,000) and it costs us £2,800 a month.

Moved to bigger house 3 years ago, otherwise we'd be nearly mortgage free.

What jobs do you do? I thought DH and I had pretty good well paid jobs but we still don't reach £10k net. So many replies of between £10 and £15k on this thread, I'm wondering what career we should have gone for!
