There is no Southern Ireland

So sick of hearing people say say Southern Ireland when referring to anywhere outside of Northern Ireland. Any place outside of Northern is the Republic of Ireland. We do not have southern Ireland..

The Ulster thing is just lazy and annoys me too, especially when it's used by loyalists. Totally geographically and historically wrong!

I think 'Southern Ireland' was created by the Govt of Ireland Act at the same time as 'Northern Ireland' but it was never established as a Home Rule jurisdiction/parliament, it didn't go far enough for the nationalists at the time, so that is why the Irish have never liked it and find it a bit of a slur.

User839516 · 13/10/2023 22:58

DH and his family say ‘the south’ or ‘the free state’ (sort of in a jokey way) or sometimes ‘the republic’ but never Southern Ireland. I have always assumed it wouldn’t be received very well by residents of ROI.

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 22:59

@ColleenDonaghy 🤣

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/10/2023 22:59

Ex mil was from Dungarven and she always said she was from southern Ireland

Splitscreened · 13/10/2023 23:00

I was going to post that, @ColleenDonaghy. 😀

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 23:00

Currently answering Ireland's call

“The Island of Ireland”? What is the status of this term?

It refers to Northern Ireland and Ireland.

boismint · 13/10/2023 23:01

NB it’s “the island of Ireland”

@TheThingIsYeah Eire is actually a slur so nobody uses it here anymore.

I'm Irish, living in Ireland. It's definitely not a slur. The government still use it in documents.

And loads of people.in the UK think the whole of Ireland is part of the UK !

But tbh, those same people think Cornwall is a country in its own right! The majority of people in the UK know which part of Ireland comes under the UK, but I find a lot of young people are pretty crap with Geography. I don’t think it’s taught the way it used to be.

Oakbeam · 13/10/2023 23:07

And Australians constantly throwing shrimps on the barbie :)

Never understood why that was shrimps and not prawns until I found out that it stemmed from a “Visit Australia” advertising campaign in the the USA.

I'll probably fall asleep during the match again

MaireO · 13/10/2023 23:10

When I first moved to England from Ireland many moons ago, people would ask me if I was from 'Southern Ireland'. I'd always say 'no I'm from the midlands' as I thought they meant it geographically (had literally never heard anyone til then refer to Ireland as Southern Ireland unless they meant the most southerly counties etc). They often then looked baffled and would say 'I thought you said you were from Ireland', as though I must mean Leicester or something, like Ireland didn't have a middle bit too!
😂😂😂😂

Mooshamoo · 13/10/2023 23:12

I think people don't like the term southern ireland as that makes southern ireland and northern Ireland sound like a happy agreed partition.

When ,in actuality, the Republic of Ireland fought for independence and feel like they had to give up northern Ireland .

I think.

TeenLifeMum · 13/10/2023 23:13

I say Southern Ireland when referring to where my family is from - county Kerry. I’m meaning Ireland but more specifically the south of it.

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 23:15

But for people who mean southern Ireand, as in the bottom of the country, just stop capitalising
southern. Simple.

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 23:18

@MaireO that happened me in England too. What part of Ireland are you from? The West. Look at me like I have two heads 😂
