There is no Southern Ireland

So sick of hearing people say say Southern Ireland when referring to anywhere outside of Northern Ireland. Any place outside of Northern is the Republic of Ireland. We do not have southern Ireland..

To be fair the English get shit like that too. The "bo oh of wa'ah" (bottle of water) that American Tik Tokers think we all say. Like everyone in the UK has the same accent. Or any accent like that really.

And Australians constantly throwing shrimps on the barbie :)

I guess every country has their own thing other people hear and just assume it is true.

RedLolly101 · 13/10/2023 22:00

I live in Southern Ireland. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Well, south west Ireland, to be fair.

853ax · 13/10/2023 22:00

Country is Ireland (Éire in Irish)
Republic of Ireland is the football/soccer team name , used by some to distinguish between state & island

Do hear people in Northern Ireland use 'southern' or 'down south '
But if anyone in Ireland said South would think Cork area.

tillytoodles1 · 13/10/2023 22:00

My friend calls it the free state.

It's hardly the same. Irish get mocked for their accepts and leprechauns. We are talking about history not somebody mocking your accent.

My Dad is 81 and moved from Ireland as an 11_year old child in the 50,s he says he got a lot of verbal.abuse in the 60,s and 70 s being a young.Irish man with a distinctive Irish accent growing up.in Manchester in the Times of the troubles so has always rightly or wrongly described himself as being from Southern Ireland.

Well, south west Ireland, to be fair.

You live in the Republic of Ireland.

My FIL always said he was from southern Ireland.

You live in the Republic of Ireland.

I think it's technically Ireland. Personally, I have no issue with ROI, but afaik it doesn't have any legal meaning and the official name of the country is Ireland.

RedLolly101 · 13/10/2023 22:05

No, I've looked on a map and I definitely live in southern Ireland. 🫣

Firebird83 · 13/10/2023 22:05

I know some people from Northern Ireland who refer to the ROI as “Southern Ireland”

malmi · 13/10/2023 22:05

Interestingly there's no actual country named "Republic of Ireland" either (it's just Ireland).

An Irish colleague was quite proud of the fact that "only in Ireland" would the northernmost point be in the South...

Neverinamonthofsundays · 13/10/2023 22:06

The only way it would make sense is in the context of a compass but I cannot even think of that at this hour and my age plus if the kids do not shut up I am sending them to the NI granny and leaving them there. Bid you all a goodnight be you from Southern, Western, Eastern or Northern Ireland.

I've heard "the South" and "down south" but never Southern Ireland. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I've lived in NI 16 years and ever noticed it.

yellowmoon487 · 13/10/2023 22:08

Born and live in NI here, we typically say 'the South' or 'the Free State' (but only the latter in certain company).

Typically wouldn't refer to Donegal as 'the South' though funny enough.

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 22:08

Up the West and fuck the rest

Ekdjt · 13/10/2023 22:10

We call it Ireland or when talking about it in relation to family in NI we will refer to it as "the republic".

What I find really weird is the amount of people who think the entire island of Ireland is part of the UK and have literally not believed me on occasion when I have said that ROI is an independent country with its own judiciary, parliament, etc. Was at an event once where people were surprised that there is a separate national anthem - they thought it was God Save The Queen!

I’m Northern Ireland born and raised and we all say ‘southern Ireland’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

Neriah · 13/10/2023 22:13

I have literally never heard a single person refer to the Republic as Southern Ireland. Nor have I ever heard any person consider Eire to be a slur.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 13/10/2023 22:13

MY OH used to say I was southern irish to annoy me but I found it better to call him a brit back and he stopped.

It is the lack of fada that is the slur.
