There is no Southern Ireland

So sick of hearing people say say Southern Ireland when referring to anywhere outside of Northern Ireland. Any place outside of Northern is the Republic of Ireland. We do not have southern Ireland..

Did everyone you WhatsApped have an Irish background so @AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen?

Ekdjt · 15/10/2023 17:28

I just remembered going to send something to Galway at the Post Office and the lady at the counter didn't believe me when I said it'd need a Europe stamp, because 'Ireland's in the UK'. She checked with her supervisor before putting the correct stamp on it!

I worked in England in the eighties and a lot of people thought I was Scottish. I was the person in work who knew that Scottish and NI banknotes were ok to accept.

I think a lot see themselves as Northern Irish...and possibly Irish but wanting the benefits of being British. It is a dilemma. A hundred year old dilemma.

That's the 'best' part of it. You can choose which one you prefer according to what works best!!

Mainly Northern Irish for me, but British going to the GP and Irish at the airport.

Lots of people aren't as flexible.

Yes all plastics
ie the children of Irish parents who all came over in the mainly 50s and 60s.
Most of my relatives live in Ireland but I don’t have a WhatsApp for them.

Those are the only people I grew up with. It’s only when I went off to Uni that I met people with different backgrounds.

I voted for Brexit precisely about the freedom of movement issue.

Hows that working out for you? 🤣

Oh god!!! facepalm

itsmyp4rty · 15/10/2023 18:38

YABVU next you'll be telling me there are no leprechauns in Southern Ireland either. 😢

Piglet89 · 15/10/2023 18:45

I’m from Northern Ireland and, IIRC, we had bigger things to stress about in the 80s and 90s than some precious southerner stressing about how we describe where they’re from in the island of Ireland.

Considering leprechauns are a protected species here which has been voted in and they are protected under EU law.

Like, I mean, it's so important to be up to date with these things. Imagine not being aware of that!

Yeah, they’re skipping around with the surprisingly large dinosaur population…

Well if you find one you cannot hurt it cos it is illegal under EU law. I spoke at length to the (weirdo) man that runs carlingford leprechaun museum one time and doubted him so googled when I came home. Our leprechauns are protected. Leave them invisible fuckers alone.

JaneJeffer · 15/10/2023 19:34

One of the main characteristics of being Irish is believing that just because you can't see something doesn't mean it's not there.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 15/10/2023 19:35

I know. My mother is Catholic.

JaneJeffer · 15/10/2023 19:35

I was kinda thinking of microwaves myself

I thought most of the dinosaurs were in NI these days?

NotTerfNorCis · 15/10/2023 19:46

When I was growing up we were told to say 'Eire' instead of Southern Ireland, but as an adult I heard Eire should only be used when you're speaking Irish, and the correct term is 'Republic of Ireland'.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 15/10/2023 19:49

@NotTerfNorCis No it is just Ireland.

eggandonion · 15/10/2023 20:06

Fifa seem to use Republic of Ireland? Although that's probably dating from the era of East and West Germany.
Eurovision just use Ireland.

AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen · 15/10/2023 20:11

Wow
I thought you Irish were all joking.
But no
Leprechauns are a protected species under EU law.

They even have a protected zone in the Cooley mountains of Co Louth.

fantastic!!

Neverinamonthofsundays · 15/10/2023 20:15

@AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen yeah the guy that got them protected has a place where he started up a leprechaun hunt years ago and has made a huge business out of this and his museum for years now.
