There is no Southern Ireland

So sick of hearing people say say Southern Ireland when referring to anywhere outside of Northern Ireland. Any place outside of Northern is the Republic of Ireland. We do not have southern Ireland..

Is the North of ROI called North of Ireland or is that to easily confused?

North of Ireland is a very politically loaded term used by those who don't recognise NI's position in the UK.

The northernmost counties in ROI are typically referred to as the border counties.

Seems the team from the southern part of the Emerald Isle didn't 'try' hard enough......

runs and hides before every pp catches her 😈and stones/words her to death

eggandonion · 14/10/2023 22:08

Rte has a north eastern correspondent who covers Louth and surrounding area...not Ballycastle.
It is all slightly bewildering...

But the Irish rugby team includes players from Northern Ireland so....

eggandonion · 14/10/2023 22:10

Team...are we talking soccer here? Or the all Ireland rugby team?

That's where we get the four proud Protestants.

That’s interesting. What do you perceive to be the similarities in terms of history to elsewhere in the “mainland”?

The accent isn’t starkly different to the border counties of Ireland. Certainly much closer to them than say the Home Counties or queens English.

eggandonion · 14/10/2023 22:12

I love Tommy Bowe. He is the best Ulsterman...better than Rory Best.

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/10/2023 22:14

O to be sure they do. Tiz very sad about the rugby nd'all. But the little wind up was "the southern part of the Emerald Isle" - usually guaranteed to bring about an attack of the vapours....

Just having a laugh - you can 'word' me to death now.

No, we don’t say that for the north of the Republic of Ireland.

Not enough Cork players is the issue.

Up the rebels.

Is that supposed to be an Irish accent?

Rugby is played all Ireland - ie the whole of the island, not just the 'southern' bit...

Saw him in the airport back in his playing days. Always looked so slight on the pitch, fucking enormous in real life. The front row must be frankly terrifying. Grin

Oh yes Andrew is very nice. And oh to speak French like Ronan OGara...

Going to ignore most of this because I just can't.

But regarding accents. Donegal and Derry accents aren't at all alike then... and Cork and Dubliners sound the same so?? 🤣🤣.

The issue isn't referring to Ireland as the southern part of the emerald Isle - because that's a description. The issue some Irish people have is with our country being called Southern Ireland as it's just incorrect.

eggandonion · 14/10/2023 22:26

Thirty years in Cork and my husband can't understand our next door neighbour. Its like a comedy sketch.
Try asking for flour in a Belfast accent.

eggandonion · 14/10/2023 22:28

Although when I lived in East Angular I couldn't make people understand me at times.
