Sister on holiday with Covid

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

Keep your nose out. You are being completely ridiculous like those idiots who still wear masks in the open air . #nuts

Pre-covid, people were falling over themselves to explain that if you had the flu, you would be delirious and bed ridden, pretty much in a coma, at death door unable to even lift your head and remember your own name.

Since then, they've come to realise that the flu is "just the flu". Some have it really bad, some have it light and don't even know it's the flu until they test.

We might get there with Covid eventually.

You are not being unreasonable. Airlines do not allow you to travel until you have a negative Covid test. She should inform cruise, insurance and airline. There will be vulnerable people on the flight. It’s selfish to go ahead and fly. I’m taken aback by how many people wouldn’t adhere to this.

WHICH airline ask for a covid test today?

Mmhmmn · 13/10/2023 17:53

If people just follow some basic hygiene like regularly washing hands and wearing a mask if you do have a respiratory infection that would go a long way. Locking ourselves away for the rest of time is hardly workable is it - Covid's here to stay now, in its various mutating forms. (I was all for lockdown when it was needed).

I got covid on the flight back from my honeymoon a fortnight ago cos I forgot to wear a mask (I'm immunosuppressed so I was a total idiot for forgetting).

I've been pretty poorly for a fortnight but not as bad as I was when the first strain came out. More pissed off about a horrible end to my honeymoon tbh!

If sick people wear a mask to protect everyone else, fine by me.

bbcfolkie · 13/10/2023 17:56

Yes, you're being ridiculous.

There's people everywhere with covid, most of my friends have had it recently. One person isolating on a cruise with thousands on board will make zero difference!

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/10/2023 17:56

@jenny38 - where on earth are you getting that from? Airlines haven't needed negative covid tests for at least 18 months now. And even then it wasn't all countries that needed them

Sense seems to go out of the window when people are on cruises. A friend of a friend was on a cruise with her family when her DD came out with chickenpox - she covered her in makeup and carried on as normal so their holiday doesn’t get ruined. Your sister should be using her common sense - keep away from others, stay in the open air and not the indoor areas etc.

I would love to go on a cruise but other peoples lack of hygiene puts me off.

Apparently people think nothing of coughing in their hands and then touching the buffet items and my work colleague was going for a wee when another person was very obviously doing a poo. The guy then left the cubicle and went straight to the buffet without washing his hands at all🤢

No wonder people get so sick on them.

Sorry to hear that but I'm curious to know how you knew you caught it on the flight?

Rubbish, most airlines, (British ones at least) have not required that for some time...

sunglassesonthetable · 13/10/2023 18:04

*She can't leave the ship, but she should not be leaving her cabin (if she were in UK then it's stay home for 5 days unless absolutely essential)

@MoggyP

Where does that come from?

bbcfolkie · 13/10/2023 18:05

Covid safe cruises aren't a thing.

They're no worse than any kind of holiday that involves being around others on a plane/in restaurants/on planes. I just accept that it's a risk if if I'm going on holiday anywhere.

HerMammy · 13/10/2023 18:08

@WhoWants2Know
But to be honest, even if I tested negative I would be arranging to work from home with any viral symptoms
Surely you know that the majority of us cannot do our job from home, I work outdoors so definitely not an option.

jenny38 · 13/10/2023 18:08

They don't require a negative test from everyone to fly.i think that was misunderstood.
However if you test postive on holiday, you cannot fly back until you test negative.

xyz111 · 13/10/2023 18:11

BlinkerGoBlink · 13/10/2023 15:29

I think YABU, purely as I assume she wouldn't even know she had covid if you hadn't given her a test and there are no protocols to follow so she must have it quite mildly.

HOWEVER. I type this on DAY 7 of covid and I really, really need to shout this from the rooftops:

THIS DOESN'T FEEL LIKE A FECKIN' COLD!!

I am fully vaccinated, healthy, not overweight, not in any way clinically vulnerable and it has been really, REALLLLLYYY SHIT.

I have chosen to isolate at home because I honestly couldn't live with the guilt of giving this to someone. I've had uncontrollable temperature, burning chest, inability to breathe agonising cough, etc etc. I was quite scared at one point.

Covid still hits everyone differently. First time I had it, yes, definitely like a cold, this time FUUUUU NO! That's all. End of vent.

It definitely affects everyone differently. I had it last month (only tested due to the work I do) but I just felt I had a normal winter cold. Not even that bad.

But how would they know?

jasminocereusbritannicus · 13/10/2023 18:18

I work in a school... we've all had slight coughs lately, but as no-one has to test nobody has any idea if it's been covid and nobody has been really unwell. As usual loads of kids , especially the younger ones , are a bit snotty and sneezing over us, but that's par for the course at this time of year.
A fortnight ago I had a flu jab for the first time (due to type 2 diabetes) and I'm having a covid booster jab (for the same reason) at the end of next week. That's as far as I'm prepared to go.

I'm sure you will all love it if schools have to shut some classes or year groups again because members of staff are testing positive ...!

Lastchancechica · 13/10/2023 18:19

Dick move.

jenny38 · 13/10/2023 18:22

Her sister knows because she has tested herself. I pack covid tests when we travel, but looks like I am jn the minority.

HerMammy · 13/10/2023 18:29

Why do you pack covid tests? there's no require to to test, is it to make your travels as difficult as possible?
An airline will only know you're positive if you tell them.

WHICH airline ask for a covid test today?

Certainly none of the airlines, both long and short haul that I've flown with in the last 18 months.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 13/10/2023 18:42

She should stay away from people and wear a mask indoors but everyone on that cruise knows they're at risk of getting it and they shouldn't be there if they are high risk
