Sister on holiday with Covid

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

You are batshit crazy!
It's everywhere and it's not going away.
No one has to test or isolate.
I suggest you talk to someone about your irrational fears around covid rules.

No op. You aren’t being ‘ ridiculous’.

You are being considerate. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being considerate .

This is fuck all to do with whether it is 2020 .. 2023.. 2083.

You are just thinking about other people. And you know what- that is a bloody nice trait . Nowt wrong with that. At all.

YANBU

If people don't take responsibility and try to limit the spread, we're just digging ourselves a bigger hole of I'll health and economic collapse.

It's not just a cold. It's a vascular disease that damages your blood vessels and by consequence can damage many organs in your body.

If she leaves her cabin she should be in an N95 that is tightly fitted, not a surgical.

You are right not to give her a lift home from the airport - protect your family from infection!

WTF? Who the hell has a N95 mask kicking about, especially when they’re on a cruise 😂

I always assume they all have WFH jobs and can't grasp the fact not everyone does.

Or they haven't done a day's work in a long while because even if they can work from home, they'll know there'll be others who can't.

WhoWants2Know · 13/10/2023 17:20

Where I work, we still test if symptomatic because the people we work with are vulnerable. You can buy flu tests as well as COVID. But to be honest, even if I tested negative I would be arranging to work from home with any viral symptoms. It's not worth putting other people through it.

WhateverMate · 13/10/2023 17:21

ElleLeopine · 13/10/2023 17:08

I have just tested positive, and feeling quite rough, fluey. Started feeling really rough today, so wanted to test so that I know and can act accordingly, and considerately.
My work colleague cares for an elderly father.
I am due to see a friend tomorrow who works as a driving instructor.
I couldn't really just carry on not knowing.

In terms of your employment, what does 'acting accordingly' mean?

Litchrally · 13/10/2023 17:22

TheCunctator · 13/10/2023 14:15

You are being ridiculous, OP.

Yup.

It's nice you have that privilege.

Mothership4two · 13/10/2023 17:24

I assume OP that if you got covid you wouldn't be able to work? In your sister's place I would try to avoid crowded areas as much as possible (obviously near impossible on a cruise) wearing a mask when I did (if she has one) and would inform the medical officer. There is not really much else she can do.

The advice is try to stay at home. DS had covid last week and his employer told him not to come in until he was testing negative.

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/10/2023 17:25

I think you need to let her make her own decision. It’s likely she caught it onboard and sounds sensible. I have no tests and am not willing to pay for them. If I’m ill with fever or feel unwell I’ll stay home but I won’t know if it’s Covid. £2 for one test is ridiculous and I’d need several.

Irritatedmum · 13/10/2023 17:28

Sense seems to go out of the window when people are on cruises. A friend of a friend was on a cruise with her family when her DD came out with chickenpox - she covered her in makeup and carried on as normal so their holiday doesn’t get ruined. Your sister should be using her common sense - keep away from others, stay in the open air and not the indoor areas etc.

Boundoverbyacat · 13/10/2023 17:30

Oh dear. How is anyone this stupid? It’s not a cold. It’s never been a cold. It is a multi organ disease that if you actually took the time to read actual science you would realise it pretty nasty. Sorry for the inconvenient truth for the dimwits

Well this has given me a laugh anyway. Calling people stupid dimwits in the same sentence as demanding people ‘take the time to read actual science.’ 😝

Wintersgirl · 13/10/2023 17:31

we have to have to get out of the 2020 mindset.

Yes we do but I swear that some people would love to be in lockdown forever....

B12B12 · 13/10/2023 17:34

I have had Covid all week, just tested negative today. I felt like shit all week, still do.
luckily I have family to help me out and an employer who pays sick leave.

I think your sister is a selfish arse. I would say the same if she had flu or chicken pox.

There are vulnerable people everywhere.

Yes, people at risk should take precautions but refusing to is another ball game altogether.

Coldbrewnumber2 · 13/10/2023 17:35

You need to get some perspective and get over yourself OP - you sound a completely obsessive control freak.

MzHz · 13/10/2023 17:38

Gymmum82 · 13/10/2023 14:09

Yabu. Covid is everywhere. There are no rules to isolate anymore and barely anyone is testing.
It’s a mild cold now. We live with it

It’s very much not a mild cold, but otherwise most people who have it won’t know because they’re not testing

there are no legal requirements to isolate and sounds like @CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator sister is doing what she can without creating a mahoosive drama etc which isn’t needed

the chances that everyone else has COVID already on the shop is high

PuppyMonkey · 13/10/2023 17:40

She’d probably have caught covid from someone else on the flight home anyway - I’ve spoken to about 5 people in the last couple of weeks who this has happened to.

hoophoophooray · 13/10/2023 17:45

Ha tell my employer that. If you are well
enough to work, get your arse into the office.

Beginningless · 13/10/2023 17:45

You don’t need another person saying it I’m sure, but YABVU. You wouldn’t react like this if it were a bad cold would you? The current strains of covid do not present the same risk of serious illness as the early strains. Most people will not test now I assume.

Panaa · 13/10/2023 17:46

It's not a multi organ disease for most.
Plenty have no symptoms or very mild symptoms.

Mmhmmn · 13/10/2023 17:47

Possibly once you have had covid, you'll appreciate that it's not worth all this aggro. It's not pleasant but it just isn't practical or sensible to go on acting as if it's the bubonic plague with isolation etc (appreciate you have a different take on testing given your work with vulnerable people and don't want to pass it to them). I know many 70+ who've now had Covid and survived it perfectly intact most likely due to the vaccines. But things move on - they have to, and it's not reasonable to browbeat your sister about it, esp on her holiday.

HolidayHappy123 · 13/10/2023 17:47

@MoggyP you're talking rubbish.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/covid-19/covid-19-symptoms-and-what-to-do/

"Try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if you or your child have symptoms and either:
• have a high temperature
• do not feel well enough to go to work, school, childcare, or do your normal activities

You can go back to your normal activities when you feel better or do not have a high temperature.
If your child has mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or mild cough, and they feel well enough, they can go to school or childcare."
If effectively says do what you like if you feel well enough and kids can go to school.

Well.that,s nice you but for many ,many people they can't just work from home and Employers expect their employees in if they are well enough Covid or no Covid

Yes we do but I swear that some people would love to be in lockdown forever....

It would be an improvement if people were keeping germs and bugs out of other people's faces, covid or not.

However, I am amazed people are still testing, I think even China has calmed down.

jenny38 · 13/10/2023 17:50

You are not being unreasonable. Airlines do not allow you to travel until you have a negative Covid test. She should inform cruise, insurance and airline. There will be vulnerable people on the flight. It’s selfish to go ahead and fly. I’m taken aback by how many people wouldn’t adhere to this.
