In-laws gatecrashed our holiday

Unicornmum25 · 12/10/2023 18:41

This isn't a question really, I just wanted to moan and see if I'm being unreasonable. We have gone away on holiday abroad, my husband, my child and myself. Upon arriving the hotel said our room was no longer available but they had upgraded us from a 2 bedroom to a 3 bedroom. We were pretty pleased with this news as it was nice to have that bit extra space and we don't usually get any luck as a family. Anyway a couple of days pass and we are sitting by the pool and my husbands mum and dad have shown up and declare they are staying in the spare room of where we are staying. I honestly can't get my head around it, I just think it's rude to gatecrash someone else's holiday and they have seen our upgrade as a free place to stay for them. Oh and not only are they staying in our place for free now they are using all our bath products and sun lotions etc because they didn't take a case as they wanted their flight to be as cheap as possible. Anyway rant over for now.

Are you already married? Maybe your DH has a surprise for you??! Or am I just being wildly optimistic here 🤣. I just can't understand how this wasn't premeditated?!

JingleJanglePotato · 12/10/2023 20:21

This can’t be a serious post surely? Firstly who does this and secondly tell them to fuck off!

Only this one?

pollyglot · 12/10/2023 20:29

So MN, whatcha gonna do? Pull the thread and apologise to us who picked it as a reverse and were devoiced for it? Or allow it to keep running with the groundswell of disbelief? I have to go to work and can't be arsed waiting.

Shyam35 · 12/10/2023 20:30

Your husband definitely had a hand in this!! I would definitely be having words…

They're doing this with another thread, too - failing to pull a troll/fantastist thread about thumping a hard-faced German man who allegedly drew blood from her child (or something) because it's got so much traffic.

This has got to be the most CF thing I've ever read on MN!!!!

I wonder why that might be.

Here for the deletion message

strawberry2017 · 12/10/2023 20:40

You can tell them it's inappropriate you don't have to wait for your partner to speak up.
Can't help but feel like this is wind up post though

Daffodilsandtuplips · 12/10/2023 20:48

My in laws gatecrashed a holiday my SIL was on with her DH and two kids. Problem being-it was the in laws holiday home. Four adults and two toddlers in a one bedroomed apartment. They just turned up at the door grinning like Cheshire cats…Surprise!
The in laws bunked on the pull out sofa, the sofa the kids were intended to sleep in, the kids slept on mattresses in the bedroom.
The in laws used to let their family stay for two weeks a year free of charge..we’d been the month before..had they done it to us we’d have looked for a hotel and given them the bill but SIL put up with them for the last week of the holiday. None of us went there after that.

Millybob · 12/10/2023 20:52

I'd be livid and make it quite clear to them that they're not welcome - but I'd be even more livid with your husband who is such a wet nelly that he's calling his parents when he's on holiday to crow about the upgrade - then either inviting them or failing to put a stop to it when they invite themselves. How do they even know where you're staying?
You'd think he was a kid on a school trip who'd got a free gobstopper not an adult away with his own family.
This is not a time to be sucking it up and being polite to your in-laws - raise hell! Could you call security and have them removed from the room? Sure it will cause WW3 but if they never speak to you again, that's a win!

Have the hotel boot them for you.

JoanOfAllTrades · 12/10/2023 21:00

I’m wondering who booked this holiday? Was it DH? And then was it DH who checked you into the accommodation and told you this tale of “free upgrade”?

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark!

Dear God, my blood ran cold when I read the op.

Hello all, we just wanted to remind you all that troll hunting is not allowed on the boards - it goes against our Talk guidelines, and we take a very dim view of it. If you have any concerns please report them to us and do not air them on the thread.
Please note that Mumsnetters who continually troll hunt may have their accounts suspended which is clearly something we would rather avoid.

The problem is: people abide by the rules and report threads which are clearly trolls, and HQ doesn't respond, even just via a word on the actual thread to say "we can vouch for the OP, in so far as it's possible to do so". People then get pissed off and start muttering about trolls. I've reported this one and another currently doing the rounds which is still standing without comment. Troll threads obviously bring traffic to the site so I can see why you want to let them run, but it makes everyone fed up.
