To think its not okay to great gazans as israel has been

LethargicButAwesome · 11/10/2023 21:46

Gaza has no food, no electricity and no water. On top of that they are being bombarded constantly
Israel has bombed the only escape route for refugees via Egypt, there is no way out
israel continues the blockage by air, land and sea - no aid can get in, no one can get out.
israel has said they will obliterate Gaza.

this is unprecedented, no matter what happens with governments or wars, you have refugee camps…safe havens…(often difficult) access to water - how are we even debating that this is acceptable? Am i the only person thinking this is the human race at its absolute worst? Its heartbreaking to watch, literally noone is doing anything - we are observing a genocide.

I have to say as an Irish person whose ancestors went through actual genocide at the hands of the English I don't think I went knocking on Pollys door(assuming she is english) and said look I"ll just take your house and you have the garden she would be quite as understanding as she makes out she be!

Are you still pretending there hadn't been Jews living there all along? What part of that are you finding so hard to grasp?

I'm Irish by the way. Your analogy is completely insane. Irish people were not living in England before the English, obviously enough. They were not living there when Islam conquered the place and the majority Muslim population and their rulers subjected them to second class citizen status for centuries as the condition of being allowed to live.

flufferknutter · 17/10/2023 18:50

People can blather on about history as much as they like, but I'll ask again. Is it okay for Palestinian citizens to be bombed to hell and be denied even the chance to be refugees? No food, water, medical assistance or chance of escape?

Pollyputhekettleon · 17/10/2023 18:51

Gruntsandgroans · 17/10/2023 18:13

This is a genuine question but why should they have? Say I decided that I wanted to set up my state in England tomorrow I have English heritage, there are already some of my descendant there and I'll only take x amount. Surely England would say this is a bum deal, we already have 100% why on earth is it a good deal that you are offering me 90%?

Oh and I forgot to mention the obvious point that England is a state. The Palestine mandate was ex-Ottoman empire territory, not a state. There was no state there, no Arab state, no Jewish state. The British were trying to sort out what to do with the territory. They wanted to partition it between the two main and problematic existing populations - into two new states. The Jews living there had at least as much right to continue to live there as the Arabs did. The only real question was whether they should both be stuck into one state or should each be given their own.

Oh yeah, of course, it's simply 'understanding the roots of the conflict' when someone wants to talk about 1948 and the Nakba as a way of blaming the whole thing on the creation of Israel. It's 'blathering on about history' when we go further back and suddenly you'd rather not discuss it anymore. I wonder why.

DownNative · 17/10/2023 18:54

@Pollyputhekettleon England isn't a State as it ceased to be one when the Kingdom of Great Britain was created in 1701.

The UK is a State.

That's why nobody sees England as a member of any international body.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/10/2023 18:55

@flufferknutter It's not ok. It's NOT ok.

Yes, fine, it doesn't matter to my point.

Just seen the latest news about the targeting of a hospital by Israel. 500 dead. I don't know how anyone can defend Israel at this point.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/10/2023 19:15

The scariest thing is, the Israeli government seem incompetent and immune to the risk of this escalating right out of control, with implications for us all. It's really quite scary. And our own right wing government are going right along with it. I despair.

For a wider view of what could happen, do watch Daniel Levy, previous an Israeli peace negotiator, on tonight's channel 4.

I await the following:

  1. Israel are trying to destroy Hamas infrastructure and there were probably tunnels underneath.
  1. The population of Gaza voted for Hamas, are terrorist sympathisers so they deserve it.
  1. It was probably an accident; shit happens in war.
  1. They were told to evacuate, if they decided to stay put it's their own fault.
FurryPaws · 17/10/2023 19:19

Mumsnet need to do MUCH better to stop posters from spreading misinformation during terror situations. It's disgraceful and dangerous. There were so many posts in recent days claiming that Rishi and Stammer are committing genocide which is simply wrong and arguably an incitement of hate towards our elected politicans and also towards our Jewish citizens. I appreciate this sort of conflict gives Mumsnet an increase in traffic and they earn £££ but they are allowing dangerous misinformation and promote hate on all sides. I feel there should be a minimum of civility on these threads. The majority of posters are spreading exaggerated and untrue version of very sensitive issues, after all lives are at stakes on all sides. only yesterday an ISIS fanatic killed 2 Swedish football fans with a machine gun allegedly in revenge for the 6 year old boy who was killed in the US. This conflict is not contained to some far away country, we have Muslims, Jews, Palestinians in Europe, they're our neighbours, friends, doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, car mechanics and what not. We are all a community so while emotions are understandably running sky high on all sides, by posting crap and lies or even just highly emotive one sided posts you are directly and personally responsible for a worsening of the situation and possibly even for more people being hurt or even killed.

Very dangerous and Mumsnet allowing these posts and threads is acting lower than the lowest tabloids.

Mumsnet should take a long hard look at how they facilitate this spreading of hate and misinformation and put an end to it. They need to have a policy on what sorts of threads they allow when there is an ongoing terror or armed conflict situation. Otherwise Mumsnet and posters will have blood on their hands.

Al Ahli Arabi Baptist Hospital still ablaze

500 medical staff patients and civilians killed day before Bidens visit

OunceOfFlounce · 17/10/2023 19:25

An old Palestinian friend of mine would mention Medical Aid for Palestinians as a good charity to donate to.

I've also been following updates on daily life from an incredible young woman on Instagram since she was mentioned in a BBC article a few days ago. She is @ wizard_bisan1 and recently had a GoFundMe in her stories aiming to rebuild her life and work as a filmmaker if she survives.

The majority? Certainly, I was quoting channel 4 news, and an interview with a naked and respected source.

Me neither, stupid decision by Biden to make such a big show of support too.
Even if he persuades Netanyahu to let aid in (what kind of person leaves vital aid waiting at the borders anyway?), it's too little much too late.

I'll have a look, I've just made another donation to UNICEF, they're helping Gazan children on the ground, very brave people.

FurryPaws · 17/10/2023 19:33

@marmaladeandpeanutbutter If you don't feel you are spreading highly emotive and charged posts and misinformation, why do you feel the need to comment on my post? All good in your case then.

Can you honestly deny that there haven't been exaggerated partisan posts related to the Gaza /Israel conflict? It doesn't help does it? It spreads hate and misinformation on all sides.

I'm not taking any sides but I am observing that so many threads and posts on this topic are full of crap and hate and finger pointing without understanding the extremely complex and sensitive context of the conflict.

Mumsnet has essentially become a platform for spreading fake news and it takes them ages to remove posts or threads even when it's blatantly obvious what an OP is doing.

Any and all of us who post unverified content during this conflict and paint a one sided hateful picture of the group they are not supporting may have blood on their hands. In times like this it's really important to remain calm, factual, informed and empathetic. Pouring oil in the flames helps no one.

ketchup07070 · 17/10/2023 19:33

There really needs to be a ceasefire. The death toll and injuries are horrendous, and Israel is creating a refugee crisis for the rest of the world to solve, plus putting us all in danger of escalation. Plus, how many of our own citizens are still in the country being bombed? Why, if they want to go in, have they not done so? Surely it would be less destructive than bombing whole hospitals.

Efacsen · 17/10/2023 19:38

Senior Hamas spokesman has offered to release all hostages within the hour if bombing stops

This whole situation is insane. Hostages need to be given back. Hospitals need to stop being bombed.

Israeli government officials must have too many hits on them to count now. Nobody is going to leave Israel alone after this. More refugees and more Hamas are being created.

Quite gobsmacked at this news. We'll see what their investigation turns up.

It's despicable this is allowed to happen. Even the media seems to be broadly condemning the actions of the Israeli government now.

ketchup07070 · 17/10/2023 19:47

@Efacsen Yes, we talked a couple of days ago about the water and the risk of diseases from lack of clean water. Dead bodies also add to the risk of typhoid, I think. Even if this ends today, people won't be able to live there.
