To people not dress their babies in Babygrows anymore?

I have a 6 month old, and from day one he's mostly been wearing babygrows. I've noticed when out and about, and at baby groups etc it's very rare to see this on others. All other babies seem to be dressed in outfits of some kind.

I had a nurse mention to me a little while ago how cute my baby looked in a babygrow. I thought it was a weird comment at the time as assumed this was how all babies dressed. I've had other comments about it too.

Is there a reason people don't use Babygrows? They just seem like the easiest choice for me, less faff. Plus they're cute and seem the most comfortable thing to them to wear.

I didn’t really use babygros out and about after a few weeks.
I didn’t actually find them that practical for changes. I preferred footed leggings with a bodysuit and cardigan.

EpitomeofEpiphany · 11/10/2023 20:20

I realised that people expect baby grows for pajamas and outfits for the daytime. I just felt that baby grows were so much easier! I got a couple of those baby grows that have a picture of a suit on it, that way it pleased them and me!

KnackeredMami · 11/10/2023 20:21

I have an 8 month old and he always wears a baby grow for bed or if we're just at home but if going out anyway I get him dressed into leggings and tops, or a romper or a little joggers and jumper set. I'm not actually sure why, he just doesn't feel dressed otherwise 😂

Suspiciousmind1 · 11/10/2023 20:22

Loved a baby grow, particularly the Jojo collared ones. They’re only little once. I really dislike newborns looking like they’re adults in full outfits!

Chukkachick · 11/10/2023 20:23

i used mostly babygros day and night for longer than most, before switching to nighttime only about 6months.

definitely cba to use ‘proper’outfits on babies under 3 months!

Merrow · 11/10/2023 20:23

My first baby never seemed the right shape for them - very very long and skinny so a size that got the length right swamped him elsewhere. I swapped to trousers for that reason but I found them less of a faff too as you just whip them off, undo the vest, then on again. I always ended up popping the wrong poppers, and the zipped ones are expensive.

We also pretty much exclusively use the sling, and trousers are easier than pulling the fabric to make sure toes aren't being squished.

StrawberryWater · 11/10/2023 20:23

Leggings when out and about. Babygrows are too faffy for a quick change in the mall loos when there’s a long line of people waiting to get in and sort their own kids out.

Tisfortired · 11/10/2023 20:24

I have a 9 month old and he pretty much exclusively wore babygrows for about the first 2
months. Since then he’s worn clothes, soft, stretchy materials like leggings, jersey dungarees, matching ‘sets’ etc. I just feel it sets us up for the day if we are both ‘dressed.’

He still has babygrows for bed, mainly because he looks so stinking cute 😏

I much prefer a babygro too

QWE96 · 11/10/2023 20:24

I kept mine mainly in babygrows because my DS had awful reflux and brought up a lot of milk, so it was easier to change him. It's strange though, like a PP, I didn't feel like he wasn't dressed in them 😂

Zmasshoprace · 11/10/2023 20:24

I can understand at a playgroup mums not wanting to put their baby in a baby grow. Apart from that I'm with you and it's for the babies comfort I used baby grows for as long as possible! I loved Mamas & Papas ones.

ViaRia01 · 11/10/2023 20:24

I felt like I used babygros for longer than most but at four months now and he’s mostly in little outfits most days, especially if we’re going out somewhere nice.

it’s also interesting that they tend to be called sleepsuits now, so perhaps that’s partly why many people opt for “proper” outfits once babies are more awake.

avocadotofu · 11/10/2023 20:25

DS is now 5 and when he was little he wore the for ages but I noticed that lots of other babies didn't. I'd do whatever works for you.

Dogon · 11/10/2023 20:25

He's 20 months now but I dressed him in babygrows for as long as I could really. They are comfier than most other outfits! I think that is more usual at 6 months.

My eldest is 4 and has still never worn jeans. It feels unnecessary!

BogRollBOGOF · 11/10/2023 20:26

I used babygrows for the first 6m or so while they were pretty immbobile because they're easy and comfortable to be lying around in most of the day. If I dressed them up it was vests and dungarees which again were comfortable and practical.

This was 10/ 12 years ago. I did get the occasional innane comment about pyjamas.

It suits shops to label babygrows as "sleep suits" and sell cutesy overpriced outfits as day wear, but a lot of them aren't very practical for young babies. Babies don't care what they look like, they want to be comfortable.

Zmasshoprace · 11/10/2023 20:26

I feel the same about shoes on babies too! DS didn't even own any shoes till 12 months old.

Dramatic · 11/10/2023 20:26

I found leggings easier for changes than baby gros. Love a little baby outfit

PercytheParkKeepershedgehog · 11/10/2023 20:27

Babygros are no good for slings/baby carriers. Their toes get squashed.

JingleJanglePotato · 11/10/2023 20:27

I bought absolutely loads for my LO prior to his birth. Once he was here and past a few weeks I just felt they looked like pyjamas. Also my LO isn’t a lover of a baby grow he likes his feet to be free.

Brilliantlydone · 11/10/2023 20:27

I actually prefer leggings with a vest under for nappy changes, unless it's a zipsuit as that is handy. But I don't love a baby grow with a jumper over it

So basically. I like outfits 🤣

Darthwazette · 11/10/2023 20:27

Mine lived in babygrows for at least the first six months. They looked much more comfy without waistbands or clothes riding up.

I also think they look adorable!

CalistoNoSolo · 11/10/2023 20:28

Dd lived in babygros for at least the first eight months. She had a range of different coloured ones, my favourite was a pale yellow one with dinosaurs from La Redoute. So easy to get on and off, easy to layer with vests and card's, so comfortable for her and all cotton so easy to clean too. I always feel sorry seeing tiny babies in tiny adult style clothes, esp trainers on teeny tiny feet.

I guess that's where the footless ones come in handy! Plenty available.

Yes it did inspire me 😂. I've been thinking about it for a while though
