To people not dress their babies in Babygrows anymore?

I have a 6 month old, and from day one he's mostly been wearing babygrows. I've noticed when out and about, and at baby groups etc it's very rare to see this on others. All other babies seem to be dressed in outfits of some kind.

I had a nurse mention to me a little while ago how cute my baby looked in a babygrow. I thought it was a weird comment at the time as assumed this was how all babies dressed. I've had other comments about it too.

Is there a reason people don't use Babygrows? They just seem like the easiest choice for me, less faff. Plus they're cute and seem the most comfortable thing to them to wear.

Total opposite for me. They were the harder choice and more faff. All those poppers that never lined up the first time.

Bodysuits and dungarees for me all the time. Slip off the shoulder easily for nappy changes and just the 2 or 3 poppers on a bodysuit.

I never got the attraction of babygros, they always got in the way more.

Yep, a girl I knew used to dress her 5 month old in a baseball cap and Nikes. Absolutely cringe.

That's what it was like when I had my first dc. Mums couldn't wait to get a pair of trainers from the club book! Looking back on it it was so ridiculous, but I felt like a terrible mum when someone asked me why 3 month old ds didn't have any proper shoes!

Ghskl78888 · 11/10/2023 21:09

Babygrows for the first 3 months then moved to leggings, vests jumper/cardigans. I found it easier to change nappy etc just whipping off the leggings. Babygrows as PJ's until they learn to wriggle too much to get poppers done back up 😂

smooshraspberry · 11/10/2023 21:09

I kept both of mine in babygrows (with collars) and a knitted cardigan right up until they were a year old!
I can't stand (newborns especially) in full blown outfits.

Coffeerum · 11/10/2023 21:10

@babyproblems what I find strange is that I see so many babies now not wearing a vest/body - at my DS nursery they all wear full on outfits, I think vests are snuggly!!

I find it so strange when people don’t use vests! Imo vests need to be used as long as they are in nappies, it keeps everything in place nicely and keeps babies/ toddlers warm. Seeing a 12 month old walking or crawling about in leggings and a t shirt with their nappy hanging down and their belly hanging out makes me cringe!

Six months seems quite big for babygros all the time. Mine was crawling and pulling up and constantly trying to walk by then, and babygros just tripped her and got her in a muddle. She wore poppered vests and leggings and looked perfectly 'neat'. She did have a couple of the footless stretchy zip ones for travel days (Bonds?).

Yeah my LO isn't quite 6 months yet and he's still very immobile. I imagine the natural progression out of babygros will happen when he begins to move around much more.

Didn’t use babygros loads as found I didn’t get a lot of mileage out of them as they only fitted for a short while - they have to fit both top and bottom and if your baby eg has long legs, it may fit on top but not on bottom and opposite, whereas with leggings and tops you can mix and match. Plus I used a sling loads and in those their toes get squashed.
But if they work for your baby, I’d use them loads, they look super cute and babies spend half their time asleep anyways, hence why they ought to be dressed in something comfy, not something designed for appearance!

I used a lot of babygrows too! Sometimes with a jumper over the top etc.

Me too! My eldest was in a vest right up until she was potty trained!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 11/10/2023 21:12

6 month old lives in babygros. She is a bugger for losing socks so she stays mostly in sleep suits. Looks so cute in them as she’s so chunky. She looks so uncomfortable in tight tops sometimes. Sometimes wears pjs for bed which have no feet but I put her in a sleep bag so it’s ok.

Oblomov23 · 11/10/2023 21:12

God I loved babygrows. The faff of trousers, top, socks. An outfit. Or a babygrow. No choice!

VivaVivaa · 11/10/2023 21:12

Love a babygro. Easy, comfy and much better for fitting cloth nappies in when tiny. Probably started transitioning to ‘clothes’ at around 8 months with DS1. 3 month old DS2 has been out of a babygro about twice in his life.

Chukkachick · 11/10/2023 20:23

i used mostly babygros day and night for longer than most, before switching to nighttime only about 6months.

definitely cba to use ‘proper’outfits on babies under 3 months!

About 4 months here. Although this was also around the time that DD's feet were usually too big for babygrows, and we had to improvise with footless ones at night (thankfully it was the start of a warm Summer) 😂

I stopped using vests in the summer because DC was getting too hot, even with short sleeved ones. I'll use them again when it gets cold though.

Bemyclementine · 11/10/2023 21:14

Noooooo don't do it!! They're so cute in baby grows. My 2 wore them for bed until I couldn't fuind any big enough (2-3 yrs) nothing cuter than a toddler in a baby grow

MysteryBelle · 11/10/2023 21:15

It’s a crime to put a baby in jeans or 3 piece suits LOL what in the world. They should wear adorable and cute rompers for everyday, or a comfy shorts outfit (in slightly more structured fabrics for ‘formal’ occasions like church or family gatherings). No long pants for babies, ridiculous and makes no sense. Not talking about long warm leggings for winter, of course.

Im with you Op. Cute and adorable and comfortable is the way to go for babies.

I feel the same!

Surely you just make the vest the top then though? No need to double layer if it’s hot, a short sleeved bodysuit and shorts or leggings.
Bare bellies and clothes riding up and down when they are picked up just seems so uncomfortable for babies.

Darkmode2 · 11/10/2023 21:17

Both my babies lived in babygrows until they were about 1 years old. They only wore proper outfits for special occasions or photos lol I found babygrows so much easier than faffy clothes

Parker231 · 11/10/2023 21:18

DT’s solely wore babygros until they were about 9 months old. Practical and made life easier.

We just did rompers and t shirt/shorts. He never seemed uncomfortable to me at all.

LocalHobo · 11/10/2023 21:21

I'd feel that way much more if I had a girl probably. There's more exciting outfit options
I much prefer the outfit options for boys.

NameChangeToInfinity · 11/10/2023 21:22

I hadn't really thought about this before but I never used baby grows outside of the house unless it was winter and they were wearing a snowsuit on top while we went for a walk or to pop to the shops. Suppose I felt it would be the same as me going out in my pyjama's? I think as long as baby is comfortable and clean it doesn't really matter though.

Duttercup · 11/10/2023 21:23

I find it a bit weird when people use 'outfit' as a pejorative when the overwhelming majority of babies in 'outfits' will be dressed like this.

To people not dress their babies in Babygrows anymore?
Mumaway · 11/10/2023 21:25

I thought exactly the same thing when mine were small, but that was 10yrs ago! I used babygros until they started walking, never really got into outfits for littleuns, couldn't really seem the point.

Guibhyl · 11/10/2023 21:27
  1. it’s definitely a class thing!
  2. i don’t understand people who have specific outfits and don’t seem to mix and match. Like I see people say “my 4 month old has 15 outfits” which implies that they are only worn in specific combinations?
