To people not dress their babies in Babygrows anymore?

I have a 6 month old, and from day one he's mostly been wearing babygrows. I've noticed when out and about, and at baby groups etc it's very rare to see this on others. All other babies seem to be dressed in outfits of some kind.

I had a nurse mention to me a little while ago how cute my baby looked in a babygrow. I thought it was a weird comment at the time as assumed this was how all babies dressed. I've had other comments about it too.

Is there a reason people don't use Babygrows? They just seem like the easiest choice for me, less faff. Plus they're cute and seem the most comfortable thing to them to wear.

I hated mine in babygros. I was totally useless at poppers and always ended up having to redo them about 3 times before they were right. (Zip babygros weren't very common at the time - which makes me sound ancient, but my youngest isn't even at school yet!!)

I loved dungarees. Only needed to undo a few poppers for nappy changes and no need to take legs out etc. just do the poppers back up around the leg.

It might not be that people want their babies dressed as adults, just that babygros aren't always the most practical.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/10/2023 20:54

I don’t believe in putting babies in anything uncomfortable though - so no dresses, jeans etc

BurbageBrook · 11/10/2023 20:54

Oh and another thing- I find tops or dresses much more of a pain for breastfeeding. Her top always rides up and looks uncomfortable when she's pressed up against me feeding. Baby grows are much more practical all round!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/10/2023 20:54

Dungarees when they were older babies/ walking etc

Cattenberg · 11/10/2023 20:56

Mine wore baby grows for months. I gradually realised that by taking her out wearing one, I was in the minority. But young babies spend the day lying down - they don’t need to dress up IMO.

I didn’t find baby grows a faff when changing nappies. For me, the trouble with separates is that the baby keeps “coming apart in the middle”, whereas a baby grow stays in place.

elliejjtiny · 11/10/2023 20:56

Baby grows are much easier I found, especially on ds3 who was always pulling off his socks and losing them. Also I had those lovely bright ones from next which seemed a waste to only wear them at bedtime when nobody else could see them!

I remember when ds4 was about 7 months old and he'd fairly recently had major surgery on his face. A little girl of about 3ish came up to me at soft play and started to ask me a question. I thought she was going to ask me about his scar but she asked me why he was wearing pyjamas!

Goodnightythen · 11/10/2023 20:56

I got a bemused comment from a friend about my nine month old who was wearing a baby grow, "you're sending your baby to nursery in that??!"

SouthLondonMum22 · 11/10/2023 20:57

Mine is 10 months and I've dressed him since birth really to help establish routine and because I like dressing him in outfits, sleepsuits are for bedtime only here and the poppers are faffy enough just for then.

Loved a baby grow, particularly the Jojo collared ones. They’re only little once. I really dislike newborns looking like they’re adults in full outfits!

Yep, a girl I knew used to dress her 5 month old in a baseball cap and Nikes. Absolutely cringe.

Taylorswiftserastour · 11/10/2023 20:58

Babygros in the day until about 4 months and then into soft leggings, vest and a top/sweater. DS is long in the body so was on the next size up to accommodate that but the legs would flap about!

Yes mine all including current one live in babygrows until about 1 when walking. I had them in slings so the footless ones with grippy socks which also help when crawling. I find the one piece clothes like babygrows easier than the mental effort of matching top and bottom and tops riding up etc. I dunno, I find outfits look messy on babies as they just crumple and ride up etc. They look better when babies are actually upright imo. I dressed them up on special occasions but it was nice to put them back in babygrows after. Definitely no shoes until walking and tried to have them barefoot as much as possible indoors. I think there is pressure to dress them up but I cba with that, think social media has a lot to do with it as more people putting their babies on there. I have relatives that dress them up from newborn but I think they’re abit insecure and worry what others think.

Yeah I agree that outfits looks "messy" on babies. Don't know why.

Very interesting how different our opinions are on it though. I never realised some people thought Babygros were pyjamas!

We've endless years of dressing our children in proper clothes, I think it's nice to keep the babygro while they're actually babies. Less mental effort for me too, to pick and match outfits

I preferred to have a distinction between day and night for setting a routine.

Coffeerum · 11/10/2023 21:00

@Goodnightythen do you just have a really immobile baby? I’m all for comfort but couldn’t imagine a 9 month old in a baby grow in the day. Mine was already walking and had been crawling and cruising for months! A babygro would have been a hazard particularly at nursery.

notahappybunny7 · 11/10/2023 21:00

I always used to dress my daughter in leggings , a nice set or even a dress. When she was about 1 I swore with a second it would be nothing but babygros till they were properly walking!

I'm going to put my head above the parapet and say I think this is a class thing. When my eldest was born the area I lived in you never saw a baby in a babygro. Babies were brought home from the hospital in double denim or a football strip. A babygro was for night sleeping. I remember going to a baby clinic in the nicer part of town and being really shocked that the babies weren't 'dressed up'. They were all wearing what were jammies in my eyes 😂. What was even more shocking was that they were all dressed in white too, so you could tell if it was a boy or girl.
I live in a more MC area now and all I see are babygros or very simple leggings. No 'outfits' at all.

Yes, I wanted to mention it being a class thing too - but I didn't want to get eaten alive 😆.

I think it's nice not to have anything tight round the middle too. So no leggings/jeans etc.

Babygros are perfect.
And footless ones (or cut the feet off) when starting to move more of for doing wearing.

I also wonder if its a class thing. Wanting baby to be "dressed"

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/10/2023 21:01

Both my kids loved on babygros....so comfy, just what a baby needs

Ohreallynotok · 11/10/2023 21:01

My baba is 9 months and I love a gro, I caved to peer pressure and started putting him in clothes for baby groups but at home he's in a gro all the time, different ones for day time and night time, actually he wears PJs often now at night.
I think they are super comfortable and nice for them to get around in especially now mine has started crawling he's delighted with himself and trousers etc tend to slip somewhat.
I particularly like plain white ones I like that he looks like a baby!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 11/10/2023 21:01

Babygros, leggings, t shirts for as long as possible, day and night. I would test the garment inside and out for stiff seams, nasty stiff applique backing, no fluffy stuff, no tulle.

It must be horrible to be trussed up in uncomfortable clothes, unable to complain. And those cutesy headbands should be outlawed.

DysmalRadius · 11/10/2023 21:06

InTheRainOnATrain · 11/10/2023 20:42

You just pull them down to the knees. Why would you need to take them off? Unless you’re using nappy pants but they’re not helpful until they’re standing up. You can get footed leggings too to get around the socks- H&M do great ones. With girls also tights and a jumper dress are easy until they start crawling. But babygrows, the legs have to properly come out. And then poppers!! The worst invention ever.

I wouldn't take them off but my kids have always made it their mission at every nappy change!

ronswansonstache · 11/10/2023 21:06

My DD was a covid baby so always in babygrows as we hardly ever went anywhere. I don't know if I might have put her in outfits if we'd gone out and about more, but I always found them a bit of a faff. Even her Xmas outfit at 3 months was an Xmas baby grow.

I loved them! Was sad when she grew out of them.

babyproblems · 11/10/2023 21:06

I used a lot of babygrows too! Sometimes with a jumper over the top etc.
what I find strange is that I see so many babies now not wearing a vest/body - at my DS nursery they all wear full on outfits, I think vests are snuggly!! I get a shiver when I see bare tums and the top of their nappies!!

Girasoli · 11/10/2023 21:08

When I drop DS2 off at nursery all the babies seem to wear leggings and a long sleeved top (they are mainly older crawling/walking babies)

I liked babygrows and leggings with feet when mine were little, any time they wore normal trousers they'd ride up only if I used the sling.

Totalwasteofpaper · 11/10/2023 21:08

I believe in dressing baby for max comfort so had exclusively babygrows vest and cardigans

However I vividly remember being in a fairly expensive/fancy baby class a friend dragged me to when DD was about 9m and she was in this lovely little baby grow and my friend asked me if I'd been running late... I was a bit confused and then I look around and all the other kids were in dressed in little outfits and dresses and tiny dungarees and those stupid tiny designer trainers I was like... Eepp... Maybe i need to start putting some clothes on her when we go out...

Duttercup · 11/10/2023 21:08

Six months seems quite big for babygros all the time. Mine was crawling and pulling up and constantly trying to walk by then, and babygros just tripped her and got her in a muddle. She wore poppered vests and leggings and looked perfectly 'neat'. She did have a couple of the footless stretchy zip ones for travel days (Bonds?).
