Collective Punishment - No water, no food, no medicines

Lieblingsessen · 09/10/2023 19:19

I do not condone whatsoever what the Hamas attacks on civilians in Israel or their ideology

But surely, Israel laying siege to Gaza, preventing innocent civilians from accessing water, food, medicines, electricity for hospital equipment, is not justifiable. To collectively punish civilians who have no control over what Hamas or their government does. This is medieval.

Where is the outcry on the mainstream media about this? Surely it is not being anti-semitic to call out Israel, that retaliation is not unexpected, but collective punishment is horrendous.

I’m pretty sure we’ll find out Russia is behind the attacks anyway. Or at least had a hand in it.

ketchup07070 · 09/10/2023 22:06

Egypt is preparing some space for people fleeing. But they also don't think they can cope with a huge influx of refugees and the possibility of Hamas militants amongst them, and say that Israel should take responsibility for the civilians, as they are displacing them. I think they will give some help but don't want to be overwhelmed.

Cherryana · 09/10/2023 22:06

We are seeing the horrors of war in a way due to social media like never before.
The rape, the starvation, the brutality, the inhumanity it’s always been but we have been able to ignore it or put some cognitive dissonance between it happening and us.

That old lie …

Sippingmytea · 09/10/2023 22:06

Somebody denied posts existing that used vile language referring to Palestinians- they were reported for hate speech.

Everybody that has been following this thread from the beginning has seen those posts.

So people can criticise any other regime/government in the world, they can dislike them, criticise them, get things wrong about them, misunderstand them and pass on incorrect information about them (by mistake/on purpose either way), they can actively work against that regime because politically or morally they disagree with them or their actions

But no one can do the same about the Israeli government, every comment, critique, query, mistake is labelled 'anti semitic' and argument shut down.

Exactly. I despise Putin and what the Russian government has inflicted on Ukraine, but I don't hate Russians. Quite the opposite.

Collective punishment is a war crime under international law. It’s fucking grim.

Not if it's in reprisal. The Geneva convention allows for it unless it's against POWs.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 09/10/2023 22:07

I think Hamas intends for the Palestinians in Gaza to be martyrs. They do not care about the Palestinians and they do not care about who they hurt in Israel. That seemed to be implied in an interview with a spokesperson for Hamas earlier on Sky News.

Germany, Austria and the EU have suspended aid with immediate effect. The EU is apparently the biggest donor to Gaza.

Why? That sounds terrible.

The leader of the SNP has said that his mother is trapped there I think.

It's his parents in law, who were visiting. Plus brother in law (and his family) who live there.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 09/10/2023 22:08

"do what they have been wanting to do"

Kill grannies and teens and people at a festival?
They have been waiting to kill innocent people?

It's Maddness.

Hammas oppress them alp

Israel has caused the situation!

This is like saying: if you take someone prisoner, you don't have a duty to feed and water them because they might try to fight back.

headstone · 09/10/2023 22:08

It does suit Russia, now America are concentrating their weapons of war on a tiny strip of land where 2 million people reside. Much easier to attack Palestinians with no real defence then Russia.

Honestly, you can’t blame Israel for retaliating like this. When you read of the heartbreaking executions Hamas have carried out on Israeli families, they have to protect their people, which calls for harsh measures. There was a lot of sympathy for the Palestinians prior to this, and Israel had to toe the line. But now Hamas have played right into their hands, because the sympathy has now gone on the back of their savagery, and Israel have the green light to do what they have to do.

Yes, you bloody sure can blame Israel to retaliate by cutting water and food supplies to civilians, just like you can bloody well can blame Hamas to retaliate for the displacement, abuse, apartheid, land stealing and murders of Palestinians by committing terrorist attacks.

I absolutely blame Israel fo committing crimes against humanity, like I do Hamas....

EsmaCannonball · 09/10/2023 22:03

Hamas and Iran instigated a war. It took massive forward planning. Why didn't they have a plan for civilians or food or energy? The Palestinians are just pawns in a bigger plan to them.

I still can't think of any war where the enemy combatants have supplied each other.

Because Iran don't care. Hamas can leave any time. Egypt does not want 2 million refugees. This is intended to produce a visible atrocity for the world to see.

Not true

Persons protected by the Convention are those who, at a given moment and in any manner whatsoever, find themselves, in case of a conflict or occupation, in the hands of a Party to the conflict or Occupying Power of which they are not nationals.

No protected person may be punished for any offense he or she has not personally committed. Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited.
Pillage is prohibited.
Reprisals against protected persons and their property is prohibited."

It's insane to blame Egypt. This is Israel's mess.

I wasn't blaming Egypt, I was wondering why they wouldn't accept refugees from Gaza ? It sounds as though they are trying to prepare for a lot of refugees, will the international community help with financing this help ?

It will be, terrorists are extremists, they have no real aim for peace or collaboration. And as others have said, funded by external forces, its not about the Palestinian people per se.

The middle east is full of these proxy positions.

How should Israel have responded to the Hammas attacks?

I thought that at first but apparently Israel has a massive connection with Russia. Over a million Russians live there.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/10/2023 22:12

Maybe, just maybe, if people keep calling you an antisemite

No one has ever called me an antisemite.

Alika · 09/10/2023 22:12

Condemning the actions of the Israeli government is not anti-semitic. I find them inhumane and condemn their acts of terror regardless of religion. I am utterly, utterly ashamed that our PM voiced support of the attacks on Gaza and turned a blind eye to the horrific retaliations. I condemn the actions of Hamas and the siege and retaliations on Gaza, neither is okay and neither should be disregarded.

I do not have anything against ordinary Israelis - simply the government. It's bloody awful for civilians on both sides, most of whom I imagine want to see an end to this never-ending bloodshed. I don't understand the mindset of those who can write it off as Palestinians having it coming because of the actions of Hamas. It was deeply upsetting to see Israelis being kidnapped and bodies being paraded, as it is to see rockets raining down relentlessly as children and their families desperately try to find shelter.
