To be annoyed with a stranger telling me to 'cheer up'

I've just been out for a walk to town. A man of about 60 passed me and told me to 'cheer up'.

I am not cheered up, in fact I'm pissed off. Why do strangers think it's acceptable to say this to someone - I could have just received bad news or be going through something terrible.

I felt like telling him to piss off but I'm too timid to do such a thing.

I agree that's frustrating but I think what he probably wanted to say was -

You don't look happy. I don't even know you but I care that you are unhappy. Please know that people care about you.

But he didn't have time so he tried to say something friendly to portray his care.

LMFAO!!!!!! 😂 Do you actually believe that @isthesolution ?! This was a nosey, pushy, arrogant man, who thinks he has the right to tell a woman what to do do! And that her non-smiling face is not good enough for him.

And yeah, no WAY would he have said this to another man. Another man would have said 'who do you think YOU'RE talking to, you cheeky cunt?!' THAT is what women need to. Stop being polite to nosey interfering fuckers who we don't know from Adam, and tell them to fuck off and mind their own business when they stick their twopennyworth in! OR flatly ignore them and look the other way.

When me and DH were in the park the other week, I had jeans on, boots, and a short sleeved blue top. DH was wearing wearing trainers, and had a shirt, jeans, and a long sleeved cardigan on. This woman - about 15 years older than us, thought it was OK to stop in her tracks, 6 feet from me, stare at me, block my path, and say 'why haven't you got a coat on, or a couple more layers of clothing? You must be freezing, you'll catch pneumonia.' It was 20 fucking degrees celcius. Hmm

I was like Confused, and I ignored her, walked around her, and carried on walking. Annoyingly DH had stopped where he was/where we were, and said 'oh she doesn't feel the cold.' I heard nosey random woman say (as I was walking off,) 'well she should wrap up better.' I was fuming that DH had engaged with her.

He caught me up a minute or so later and said 'well you were rude!' I said I was fucking NOT. That random woman was the rude one! Stopping in her tracks and telling me I'm not dressed suitably and need to put more layers on! I'm a middle aged woman with adult children in their twenties! Who the fuck does she think she's talking to? And why the fuck did you engage with her?'

Random people making unsolicited comments boils my piss it really does! Men AND women! I have no hesitation now in 100% ignoring them, or telling them to mind their own business. I'm not a timid little child, and I won't be fucking treated like one. I also give zero shits if I offend some random nobody!

I read this on Mumsnet in another thread : " Thank you for your input, random man"
Maybe try that next time, I'm saving it up for just such an occasion!

Nah. Don't encourage these idiots by thanking them. If they're rapping out directives to female strangers their egos are already gargantuan enough that they might think you mean it.

All that women expect is to be left the fuck alone to get on with our day. You really wouldn't imagine that to be too big an ask.

Not so. They're incapable

@PleaseGiveMeBackMySummer I would have been furious with him for engaging with her AND calling you rude.
I do what you do, just walk on, but I give them a malevolent glare first 😁
Blocking your path was not on. She sounds bonkers.
