How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

I actually quite like the colour of the paint but not the wallpaper (sorry). I think they go OK together.

ShipshapeShore · 06/10/2023 16:00

It looks a little to me like you've made a bold choice with the paper (which looks lovely) then got scared and gone really safe with the paint and they just don't quite go. It looks fine, but I wouldn't blame you for changing it

namethisbird · 06/10/2023 16:10

I don’t like the wallpaper as it isn’t to my taste as I prefer neutral colours but I would go F&B skimming stone. I think Dulux does a good match if you look online.

I think you have got it spot on - I chose the wallpaper and then OH suggested the paint colour based on it being something ‘that everyone will see’ so we decided to go safe…and it does not work at all!!! Well it does tbh, it’s the same time as the gold just a few shades lighter, but I just hate how safe it is - it’s not me at all!

Try changing the lightbulbs (if they're cool white, get warm white and vice versa) it sometimes does a world of good for odd shade paints. If that doesn't work- repaint

GammonAndEggs · 06/10/2023 16:31

I’d go full on and put that ace wallpaper everywhere!

😂 this was my original plan but there wasn’t enough rolls of the same batch ANYWHERE - it was a nightmare just getting these 4 rolls!! I absolutely love it 😍😍 (unlike most of Mumsnet 😏😂)

I agree @Mirabai . Was trying to be nice as the wallpaper wasn’t in question 😬

TenderDandelions · 06/10/2023 16:35

Oh and I agree with the lightbulb colour too. We repainted the downstairs loo to a bolder colour and it looked great in natural light and absolutely hideous at night when you turned the light on.

I've since changed the bulb to a "daylight" bulb and it's so much better!

Why bother going out of your way to agree with the ‘ghastly’ comment if you’re trying to be nice - clearly you’re not and still wanted to get your point across 😂 That’s totally fine though, just a waste of your own time as I’m not going to suddenly question the part that I love because MN don’t like it 👍🏻

Actually I like the wallpaper too , please ignore some of the hyperbole. Like oh it’s giving me a headache . Clearly no one got a headache looking at that image, if they did they need medical help 😂

however I don’t agree it works op, and irs just that its safe. Safe works. I don’t think it works at all. It clashes in a bad way , if I came in I’d think you’d decorated the bit with wallpaper and hadn’t got round to the painted bit yet, that it had all looked like that before the wallpaper

only you know if you can live with it. I couldn’t. Well I could i would not wish to. I have previously made a mistake and literally had ir redone the next day . If you’ve got the funds I’d get it redone.

SquirrelFeeder · 06/10/2023 16:52

That wallpaper would play games with my head if I had a migraine or was hungover 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Aria999 · 06/10/2023 16:52

I had a similar problem with our bathroom. Tried to get a sand color to compliment the colour of the bath surround and it turned out dreadful. Like you, too yellow!

Am in America so no dulux visualizer here but I brought home a ton of paint cards and held them each up against the surround along with the original paint card, so I could move them to catch the light in the same way as the actual paint.

Then repainted it myself (understand you can't do that). I am so glad I fixed it as it was bugging the hell out of me.

Good luck!

Thank you for being the voice of reason, I honestly couldn’t be bothered so thank you 😂 I feel the same - the colour is from the same gold palette so does match that…but this muted shade just does not go with the green. That’s exactly how it looks - half done, like we gave up after the paper and just though meh this old colour will do 🥴🥴

Sand is EXACTLY the colour my OH had in mind!! But it’s just turned out to be margarine instead 😂😂😂

I do think it's partly (as i think pp said) that it also shouts at the carpet and woodwork. You can make pale yellow work with white, we actually have it in our house from the previous owners and it looks great, but what you have is too buttery somehow.

Yes totally which is something I hadn’t even considered (like I said, I’m not good at this!) so I’m incredibly grateful to the lovely people on here who have helped point these things out. I feel like I can now verbalise why I dislike it, which makes me feel far more comfortable in booking a repaint 😍

@RachyB86 there’s Dulux app that you can take a picture of the wall and apply the colour from the palette. The wallpaper is nice and stylish but the paint colour doesn’t feel right.

Have a go with the app, it’s fab as it lets you see how the colour would look like on the wall.

Technonan · 06/10/2023 17:14

It's a bit bland. I'd try that lovely teal-y blu that seems to be on the wallpaper. Your decorator probably won't mind putting a coat of something different on. Get some sample pots and try the colour out.

cornflower21 · 06/10/2023 18:11

Sorry op not my cup of tea, but I think it's quite bold therefore you may get bored of that quite quickly?

Newusernameforthiss · 06/10/2023 18:43

+1 for try new light bulbs (or get Hue ones that adjust). It makes SUCH a difference to colour perception. Otherwise... yeah the colour is not quite right. Love love love the paper tho 👍

Janieforever · 06/10/2023 18:46

To be fair I can see what he was going for, just it’s too light, the wrong shade, it probably needed more of a biscuit,

something like this would have worked,

Roasted Macadamia

A warm stony neutral

We already attempted to order from there - they accepted the order and took the money then called about 10mins later saying they only had 2 rolls of the same batch!! So I got a full refund, same happened ordering direct with B&Q, and we also visited all the B&Qs near us too 😖😖😖
