How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

Exactly. You are so right.

"maybe get the whole thing redone and go for a neutral theme" would be 🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱

redribbonrose · 08/10/2023 09:24

Magnolia?

yes, change it now. It’s a bit
old fashioned

noosmummy12 · 08/10/2023 10:01

Love the wallpaper. I’d say just go for white walls but then it’ll prob make your door look dirty. Maybe a lighter green on the emerald spectrum

Sennelier1 · 08/10/2023 10:23

I would not do anything right now. Live with it for a year, literally let 4 seasons pass and see how the colours handle themselves in all weather, all sorts of light and different atmospheres in your house. Christmas is totally different from spring! Then after a year if you're still unhappy with your first choice, book a re-paint. And work with a colour-specialist this time!

Johnsons1234 · 08/10/2023 10:28

Yes the yellow tone is awful and completely wrong tone with that wallpaper, try dulux Egyptian cotton but get a sample, paint on some paper and then hold it up again the wallpaper before painting to be sure.

henrysugar12 · 08/10/2023 10:45

I'd just paint it white.

MarrymeJM · 08/10/2023 11:08

Yeah you're right OP ..it will bug you...had my hallway done in this basic white ...makes you feel you are living in a rented house eveyime I open the door.
It will be a few more weeks of stress but it's better than living with it for a couple of years of low level stress before you decorate again.
I did consider that wall paper too. But unless you go for a colour to complement the green like a emerald paint , it's quite difficult to work with. Try another wall.paper and as others have said brush a sample paint onto the wall with the sample paper first.

Enjoy the process though!

User68 · 08/10/2023 11:13

I like the wallpaper but think the paint is too cream. Softer green or some kind of white would have been fresher. However I would paint the door and rad the same colour initially (as think that’s emphasising the cream) to see if I could live with it. Once you gets pictures up and some plants too it will look less obvious. If that doesn’t work I’d repaint at a later date.

Solibear · 08/10/2023 11:58

We have that same paint in our bedroom and it looks much better, I think because we have it complemented by warm browns and blush pink. I think here it’s just that it seems to clash with that wallpaper, so either go for a different paint or a different wallpaper. If you go into B&Q in the paint section they usually have a light that you can put the paint sample card underneath to see what it looks like in different lights. You could do that and maybe take a bit of wallpaper along with you as well to see them together, if you want the keep the wallpaper

Mikki77 · 08/10/2023 13:03

Go for a light grey or sage colour.
That would be better x

BlueSky2023 · 08/10/2023 13:40

I’m not overly keen on it but I see why you picked it to match the colour in the wall paper.
Depends on your budget, if you have a lot of cash to spare, paint it, if not I think you could live with it and hardly notice it after a while.
TBH if you do decide to paint, just do it yourself 1 room at a time and don’t pay for a decorator, It is easy and very very quick if you have a big roller,

A very very light minty grey might look good but the wallpaper is very restricting, I would probably get rid of that aswell, think it is a bit loud……sorry😟

worriedatwork123 · 08/10/2023 13:58

i like the wallpaper - at least it's a bold choice rather than dreary greige

can see where you were going with the paint but it's not working - or it might be the stark white on your woodwork, as well as the carpet doesn't tone well with the paint - is it pure brilliant white? maybe needs something warmer like white cotton or timeless

i think you need more of a light taupe - something g like egyptian cotton - if u don't want to change it (and i probably wouldn't given the expense ) then accessories are your key . i'd paint inside of your front door an emerald green colour match to your paper - then brass or gold fixtures and fittings- including big mirror opposite a wallpaper wall if possible to get the real paper reflection.

i'd try to find some artwork that had Gold yellow and emerald/ green tones in it to try and get it blending together more as well but go for dark frames to add some balance

also try changing light bulbs - especially if you have warm white as probably enhancing the yellow tones in paint and u want to cool it

ScotsBluebell · 08/10/2023 14:01

You're not being unreasonable, but I think I'd try to live with it for a bit, and add a lot of pictures. I judge everything these days by our own disaster when we painted our bathroom Germoline pink. God knows why, seemed a good idea at the time, but we had to live with that for a little while (couldn't even afford the new paint) and it just got worse and worse. One good thing about your colour is that if you decide to paint over it, it should be fairly easy. (Unlike the Germoline pink.)

Misspacorabanne · 08/10/2023 14:39

Well I think I’m the only one who thinks it’s not too bad! I like the paper, and the paint maybe looks a little yellow but to my eye it matches the wallpaper!
All the people saying go darker though, I’m not sure I would, I think the colour of the paint needs to be kept light with the dark wall paper, other wise the hallway will just look too dark.
I would keep as is, but that’s just me!

pollymere · 08/10/2023 15:26

Mine has been painted wheat for over twenty years 😂. I would say that this shade is on the dull side. We spent quite a bit of time looking at seemingly beige yellow paint colours and found that the one with a hint of yellow in really brightens up the colour. Try some different colours on the wall which seem close and see the difference. It's the right colour spectrum just not the right shade.

I like the wallpaper but the paint not so much

user1476277375 · 09/10/2023 20:12

A very soft, sage green would compliment it much better and look more modern

Tabitha2721 · 10/10/2023 00:33

It’s the paint. Avoid yellow undertones at all cost - looks 90s drab!

Laura987654321 · 10/10/2023 00:48

TIP: The paint is fine, it matches the wallpaper, the thing that's making it look yellow is the whiteness of the woodwork.

The wallpaper and wall paint are both warm toned, but the door/woodwork/radiator are cold tones. Paint them all the same as the walls.

Then paint the mirror frame gold. The strength of the gold will tone town the warmth of the walls (again, the coldness of the silver makes the walls look yellow). Frankly, add as much gold as possible. Plenty of pictures on the walls, all in gold frames. The wall should be the background, not the foreground. Don't be afraid - more is more!

Change the white plastic plug and light switches to gold fittings. It's inexpensive and easy to do.

Everything should be green, gold and neutrals. Add some big pot plants and a rug.

Absolutely no white, grey or silver.

Think rich, soft, heavy and warm.

Photos for inspiration.

Op,
The wallpaper could look stunning but it is a lavish metallic design quite deco.
I think you need to repaint I would look at Farrow and Ball London stone it has enough depth of colour to work with the opulence of the wallpaper but still remain a neutral

Also agree with previous poster that the woodwork needs toning down.

SusieLawson · 11/10/2023 02:31

I don't like the wallpaper, and that yellowish paint colour is a standard cheap paint they use in housing association homes when moving in a new tenant.

junbean · 11/10/2023 02:56

I'm a designer :) The wallpaper is nice, but the paint does not go. It looks dated, like once white but now nicotine stained. I can see how you matched it to the wallpaper but it needs contrast with a complementary color. If you look at emerald on a color wheel and then look directly opposite, you're in the red zone- so a mulberry or similar red. I would do only one wall in the red, and repaint the lighter color with a lighter shade of the emerald, or use a white with blue undertones, as blue would be complementary as well. It would still be a light color, but would play up the wallpaper instead of dragging it down. Hope this helps!
