How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

Just looked at your other photos and I think black shelves and frames would look nice. It's all about the soft furnishings and lighting.

Roselilly36 · 06/10/2023 14:05

How disappointing OP, I do agree with previous posters, the paint looks like magnolia to me. Some of our rooms are still painted magnolia, bloody hate it, so dingy and light sucking. The wallpaper looks nice though. I would repaint white tbh, the wallpaper would look striking. You might get used to the natural wicker, perhaps live with it for a while? I don’t think it goes with the wallpaper, but it probably looks a lot better in RL.

MadKittenWoman · 06/10/2023 14:10

I like the paint- it doesn't look like dingy magnolia to me, but more like Adam cream which we have all over our house- a nice cheerful neutral. The wall paper, though...

amicissimma · 06/10/2023 14:11

I like the colour. I much prefer warm yellows to cool greys and pinky greys, and hate mushroom.

I'm not a fan of the wallpaper, though. I think it overwhelms the room/hallway and doesn't work with the plain walls.

jane1956 · 06/10/2023 14:13

like the colour hate the paper sorry

More pics in case this helps!

Going against the grain but I like it in this photo, looks bright and sunny!

I USED TO HAVE THAT COLOUR! I had it in a very dark dining room and chose it after seeing a hallway on a TV programme done with it. It made my room gorgeously toasty and warm.

It has a lot more colour in it than magnolia/ landlord beige.

And I think that's the problem. You've got it up against cold white floor tiles, a very white front door, white woodwork. It doesn't work at all well.

I had it with wood surrounds and a brown toned carpet.

Yes totally agree - and with another PP who pointed this out. The problem (I think) is not the paint colour, but the bright whites that are there in the door, light switch and tiles. Try covering these up when you look at the photo and things look nice! I think you need to change your door colour, cover your floor tiles, and get a different light switch cover etc. (I realise all quite a lot of work/expense).

CherryMaDeara · 06/10/2023 14:19

I don't like it close up but actually the pictures that show the overall aethetic are nice.

I know people are telling you like they white tones of grey, but this country has little sun, the yellow is cheering and homely.

Keep it for a couple of years and then change it if you don't like it.

badger2005 · 06/10/2023 14:19

Oh and the other white things higher up.
Basically - cover up everything apart from the paint and the wallpaper, and they look good together! (imo)

Nonbio46 · 06/10/2023 14:24

Yes, you’re probably right. The amount of natural light can make such a difference to the look of decor.

letsgojo · 06/10/2023 14:24

I like it 😊

Illbebythesea · 06/10/2023 14:24

@RachyB86 the wall paper is lovely, you’re right about the paint colour though - it just looks magnolia which is cheap for a reason. Definitely go with a green paint, if you’re feeling bold go for a deep forest green (that’s what I’d choose) or if you want lighter a nice pastel green. Then it will look lovely 👍🏼

Nonbio46 I think in a lounge with a lot of natural light it does look good but when it is in a hall way with little natural light and with a much darker wall paper it can look quite drab

Yes, you’re right. The amount of natural light can really change the look of decor and colours.

The colour matches the accents in the wallpaper well.

It needs a decent rug, plant or some other things going on. You are focusing on the walls because it's so bare there.

This.

And more decorators would have mentioned if it didn't match your chosen paper anyway. They must have thought it was a good match.

Only if there's a huge amount of natural light IMO.

If this dark colour is painted in a very tiny hallway it would be too dark and dingy.

TheOGCCL · 06/10/2023 14:46

The colour is not right with that wallpaper but it kind of depends, is this the only room you don't like? Or is this colour throughout? If it's just the hallway I'd just wallpaper over the other walls with the same paper. A single feature wall is a bit dated these days (I say as someone with plenty of them). I'd also paint the back of the door a deep green but you could easily do that yourself.

DuvetsAndDreams · 06/10/2023 14:48

I would go for a dusky pink.

You are right to change it.

Nevermind31 · 06/10/2023 14:58

The colour doesn’t make the wall paper pop. it also makes the house look somewhat dated, this is a trend from 20 years ago.
however… I am not sure i could go through redecorating again…

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 06/10/2023 14:59

Personally I like the wallpaper but agree with pps that the paint looks magnolia coloured and would do my head in, it's not to my taste.

If you're keeping the wallpaper I'd say a more goldy tone of paint (I want to say burnt gold, but no idea if that's a paint colour! ) or a pale- to mid-green.

Wanderingowl · 06/10/2023 15:11

I agree with the PPs who have pointed out that issue is that this paint tone doesn't suit the white woodwork and tiles. I think that yellow/golden toned paint needs to either go with varnished wood or at least wood painted with a similar based tones.

Isitautumnyet23 · 06/10/2023 15:20

Sorry not a fan as just looks like magnolia from the 90’s from the picture. My personal preference is to stay away from anything with a yellowy/beige tone, as just looks dated. I much prefer neutrals with a grey tone - we have Cornforth White and Wevet on our walls (made with cheaper paint, not F&B)😅

Autumnunmasks · 06/10/2023 15:23

It's a bit too yellow agree

TommyNever · 06/10/2023 15:23

I don't mind the cream paint but I think a well-chosen green would better match the pleasing retro wallpaper. Black would be awful.

FindingMeno · 06/10/2023 15:27

I'm not going to lie - neither the paint or wallpaper is my taste.
I think that unless you want to change the paint to the dark colour in the paper, you need some darker colour wall art to balance the dark of the wallpaper.

Missedmytoe · 06/10/2023 15:33

As many PPs have said you need to match to the paint and not to try to contrast with it.
In a room, I'd be temped to go with a green tone to match the colour of the paper, rather than the cream.
On the stairs it doesn't look quite so bad. It would possibly be better to define the edge with some sort of rail or moulding, and then paint above - perhaps using a texture paper that will complement the design on the paper, in a greener toned paint, but in a lighter colour than the main space.
