How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

I love that retro wallpaper too! OP has said she loves it so why on earth comment just to say something negative?

OP I agree with you, the yellow cream looks dated and doesn’t work. Ive made the too light and too yellow mistake myself and didn’t get used to it, it always annoyed me, so if I were you I’d bite the bullet and change it.

I think your options are a more “neutral” neutral - I like the Roasted Macadamia @Janieforever posted above. Or if you really want to commit, colour match the green of the wallpaper.

SíDoMhamóí · 07/10/2023 07:12

I had/ have the exact problem you have. It was done 6 months ago. I decided to live with it for a year and then have it repainted. Honestly, I'm fine about it. The colour of my walls aren't great but there are bigger problems in life. I'll probably get it fixed at some stage but it's not as urgent as I thought it was

SueDonnym · 07/10/2023 07:15

what colour is the pattern on the green wallpaper - in the pics it looks either silver or white.
If it's silver/grey paint th ewalls a very pale grey or a white with a hint of grey. Or just paint it white.

Jeevesnotwooster · 07/10/2023 07:20

I like the paint. It would be fine if it was all painted. The wallpaper is very strong though (not my taste) and I suspect it's making the paint look washed out.

cat1886 · 07/10/2023 07:25

Sorry but the wallpaper is awful!! You should have got on Instagram or Pinterest beforehand!!

WonderingWanda · 07/10/2023 07:33

I don't dislike the paint or the wallpaper but I'm not sure they look quite right together. I think the wallpaper would look better with a crisp white.

AllUmder · 07/10/2023 07:40

Love the wallpaper! Looks brilliant.

The magnolia though, no no no. The colours just don't go together at all, I'd go with an off-white.

It'll look fab!

It's so hard choosing colours and decor, I have a friend who is a natural, she's just got a good eye, sadly I do not! Which means I'm always making mistakes but I've learned the value of testing - so putting a sample bit of paper up with sample of the paint, different options etc, I need to see it, as I find it hard to imagine.

I've recently moved into a new house and im painting EVERYWHERE brilliant white, will go for pops of colour in fabric, furniture and artwork, as I can't handle the stress of choosing colours this time 😂

Dizzydeers · 06/10/2023 10:37

It doesn’t work, I agree the colour is so drab.
How about a lovely green like Johnston mermaid lagoon.
https://www.allenbraithwaite.co.uk/johnstone-s-trade-mermaid-lagoon-paint

OP this suggestion is madness do not whatever you do put a strong green with this wallpaper. It would look mental.

A pale neutral would be better, as somebody else said… maybe a mushroom tone? Something with a hint of pink? The more I think about it the more I think something with a very slight pink hue to it would work with that paper. Try to find something warm, though.

UsernamenotavailableBob · 07/10/2023 07:54

Wallpaper is hideous. Take it down and warm the room up with a rich yellow

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 07/10/2023 08:05

I agree with Treebark, once you hang some paintings etc on the wall it will break it all up and will make such a difference. Wallpaper is lovely and really it is because there is nothing on the walls. Live with it until next spring and then as another poster said buy some small sample pots and paint big squares and see which looks best. You do not want darker paint on walls though as be too much. Really you are just looking at it now too much, great artwork. prints and things on wall, mirrors will bring it all together.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 07/10/2023 08:08

I have yet to paint in our new place as waited over a year, all the walls are white but will do so in springtime but will only paint feature walls as the biggest wall the white is a great background for artwork etc. Don't be too hard on yourself as picking colours so hard and everyone has different opinions. Would it be very expensive to paint over the walls but go for something neutral and something that is easy to wipe clean as lighter colours do mark easier and notice more.

MyCircumference · 07/10/2023 08:18

just live with it
its a warm shade

greenwich23 · 07/10/2023 08:27

@RachyB86 has anyone mentioned the Dulux Visualizer App yet? You can take a photo of your wallpaper, select a colour point off it and will suggest colours to go with it tonally and contrast. It will also visualise the colour on the walls for you if you hold up your phone over the wall. I use it religiously in my last home and this one. I do spend a long time going through the colours until I’m confident.

You can create moodboards and it is a good way to teach yourself about colour and notice the different types of yellow for example (a gold versus a marigold for example), as it presents groups of colours to you.

I would go for a neutral with a pinky undertone on this. I think Dulux DH Blossom might go well, it is light but haS depth and it would ground the deep green of the wallpaper.

https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/articles/dulux-visualizer-app

https://www.duluxheritage.co.uk/en/colours/1780066/dh-blossom

I think all the dulux heritage colours are a solid choice, have used a couple in this house.

borntobequiet · 07/10/2023 08:29

The paint is fine, the wallpaper horrible.

Batalax · 07/10/2023 08:32

Some good suggestions on here. Use lots of tester pots. Show us your finished result op. I don’t think I could live with it either.

greenwich23 · 07/10/2023 08:33

@RachyB86 yes the Dulux Heritage website suggesting DH Blossom or Potters’s Pink with Mallard Green. I think the light Potter’s Pink would make you and your DH happy. His idea for a neutral was good, just not yellow undertone. You can go into the Dulux Visualiser App, find that colour, save it as a favourite or to a mood board, then open the option to see your room live in new colour and pick from your favourites.

Sorry I meant Powder colour, but I personally think Potters Pink would be nice too, as well as DH Blossom. I think they’re all the same family but different darkness.

You’ve had some proper mean answers here op (AIBU at its meanest)

Obvs getting a decorator in is expensive, I always spend time on the prep - if you find a colour/wallpaper you like then look it up on Instagram.
There will be loads of tags where normal people have used it in real life and it will usually say (or you can ask) what the colours/brands of paint/carpet/curtains etc they have paired it with.

Saved me a lot of expensive mistakes.

Loopytiles · 07/10/2023 08:42

It’s fine, agree with your DP.

FlamingoQueen · 07/10/2023 08:43

I quite like the wallpaper! Timeless by Dulux is a nice colour that would go (I think). It’s an off white but would really make the wallpaper pop.

LivelyBlake · 07/10/2023 08:49

I’d look in Farrow&Ball for a similar blue to your wallpapers and see what accent colours they suggest - pick a pale one.

Humblebottomous · 07/10/2023 08:50

I don’t mind the paint colour but it doesn’t go with the wallpaper, chrome mirror etc. Would is better easier to change the wallpaper?

The paint would be ok with wood, wicker, plants etc but it very much depends on your style.
