How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

I think MacLoeds maidens would look lovely with this paper

Yes agree

Zerosleep · 07/10/2023 21:23

Sorry to say but it all looks awful including the wallpaper. I would maybe get the whole thing redone and go for a neutral theme?

Neutral is boring. You decorate a house to live in, not to sell. The Op loves her wall paper, so why tell her to Blandify her house?
We have dark navy walls in one room, every thought we were crazy when we said it and everyone suggested bland off whites. But they all love it now. Bold is good.

@RachyB86 you don’t need to worry about the old bollocks of dark colours in small spaces. I think this colour looks fab. Either this or white.

Dulux Smooth Flint - basically, a cooler colour might work well. But do a few test squares first. It’s happened to me, I lived with it and got used to it but I know how you feel!!

Zerosleep · 07/10/2023 21:35

@IAmHeartless we are all entitled to our view, OP opened that door. Direct your feedback at OP, I didn’t ask for feedback on painting my house.

TheLightProgramme · 07/10/2023 21:36

It looks like magnolia.

I hate yellow tones and hate wallpaper.

I would basically only ever decorate a house with shades of white on the wall, maybe a navy or dark green in a study in period property, at a push.

Overeggedit · 07/10/2023 21:36

Oh wait - or be bold and go for Dulux Breton Blue. My neighbour has something like that, it’s ace, and you have light coloured carpet/ceiling so would be nice too.

We have this same paper in our hall and took ages to get the paint colour right. We went with a deep dusky blue colour in the end.

That doesn’t go either and actually makes the OP’s look better by comparison.

But she doesn't want a neutral theme.

I disagree. It goes much enter than the OP's choice. Not sure it's the perfect choice but significantly better.

This looks nice but not sure it would work with a brown carpet.

Peoplehelppeople · 07/10/2023 22:07

Dulux just walnut would be lovely with the wallpaper

Lushmush · 07/10/2023 22:07

@Mirabai Ah well each to their own. We like it 😊

Zerosleep · 07/10/2023 22:07

@StrictlyJowita what do you call that vile colour on the wall if not neutral? Clearly OP was looking for some kind of neutral in contrast

Janebloom · 07/10/2023 22:10

Too yellow toned, I'd probably repaint it a bit more neutral, I recently seen farrow and ball elephants breathe a beautiful neutral which can be paired with a lot of different colours. Not loving the black wallpaper either, just maybe too dark

Hullabalooza · 07/10/2023 22:10

That wallpaper looks quite art deco to me. But I also really like the crisp white finish of a clean paint colour- definitely need to remove the yellow tones. I’d go for something like dulux timeless, if not just a pure brilliant white. Then accessorize the white walls with complementary items like gold framed mirrors to match the wallpaper

Kattitude · 07/10/2023 22:35

Personally I quite like it but I’m not living there, if you really don’t like it change it.

tootsweetss · 07/10/2023 22:40

The paint is far too warm.

You need a cooler shade, whether that is grey, green, blue or black or even just white. It needs to be a cool colour to match the wallpaper/ doors. The warmth of this magnolia is jarring with the rest of the colours and lighting.

I'd call it all yellow.

The wallpaper walls aren't neutral. Quite the opposite.

She doesn't want to get rid of the lot or however you put it and have neutral.

BarelyCoping123 · 07/10/2023 22:56

Sorry OP, I hate the paint, too yellowy. How about a very pale grey or pale olive? Personally I would go for a nice crisp white.

Pinkfluff76 · 07/10/2023 23:26

It looks like the marigold they put in rentals which is awful. Your decorator should’ve known better. Definitely repaint it now while things are still being done. Teal or peacock.

FTMum23 · 08/10/2023 00:18

I would look for a white that has green (or warm) undertones (depending on your pallet preference)
Personally I would paint the ceiling in the same colour as the walls - it can make the space feel bigger and draws less attention away from your wallpaper

Lemony5 · 08/10/2023 02:27

Yeah. I agree. The whole look is awful. Get rid and start again. I don't understand why anyone would use wallpaper at all.

Zerosleep · 08/10/2023 02:37

@StrictlyJowita 🥱🥱🥱

Elly46 · 08/10/2023 07:27

The wall paper is nice but paint too yellow toned. Go for mushroom or a warm very light green/ white. Farrow and Ball colours are amazing and you can take a swatch and get same colour mixed by crown instead if you wish (It’s pricey so we did this in our latest house but you may just want to buy the f&b.)
