How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

I would get the contrasting wall paper for the other walls. For me the pattern would be a bit much on all the walls but love it with the one it matches.

@RachyB86 did you do a tester of the paint before you went for it in the space? I picked farrow and ball slipper satin for my hall and landing And as it was bare plaster I thought f it will be fine, it looks fine in the room next to the landing. I brought 5 litres of the stuff and it looked like margarine. Safe to say it didn’t get painted. Just wondered if you tried the the colours together but not in the space so it looked fine and like you said it all looks a bit buttery. Definitely need something with a cool tone. Maybe try and find a similar paint colour to your wallpaper on farrow and ball or lick and see what complimentary colour they suggest. I love a really dusky pale pink and emerald but that’s just me. Definitely don’t go rushing in till you find the colour your happy with

Lifetooshort23 · 07/10/2023 12:43

Yeah sorry that is hideous!! The paint that is! I hate any shade of magnolia! A deep green would probably be nice! Although depends on how much there is to paint!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 07/10/2023 13:19

I might be over simplifying it but to me the real problem is the paint is just too yellow.

It looks first against the colour of your ceiling, would you paint the walls the same colour?

The wallpaper is strong enough on it's one without needing much in terms of pain, while mushroom or even some shades of green might be nice, they might be too much in that space.

It’s vile

Lorelaigilless · 07/10/2023 13:27

Either brilliant Matt white or a dark green. Personally I’d go for dark green to compliment the wallpaper.

namestevalian · 07/10/2023 13:30

I'd consider changing your switches and getting a radiator cover - that would improve the look no end ?

Abitslow · 07/10/2023 13:34

I dont like the paint or the wall paper ( ive never liked any wall paper) sorry.
It's too yellow and looks dated.
If it was me id strip it and start again and paint it white or light gray.

Everyone has their own style of paint and paper buuuuttttt no the whole thing looks dated .

Ineedaholiday23 · 07/10/2023 13:52

I was going to say the same. Paint over. It looks yellow.

Mamabear487 · 07/10/2023 13:52

I would 100% paint over with a dark / sage green

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2023 13:54

Doesn’t compliment the paper at all, wrong tone and shade.

AngryBird6122 · 07/10/2023 13:56

I really like the wallpaper and I know it might be quite a statement but I would put it everywhere rather than half/half (sorry haven't read full thread but guessing you wouldn't want to whole wall in it!)

Yes that would look good

saythatagaintome · 07/10/2023 14:02

Is that eggshell White??

I hate it too, OP. Looks like you’ve been burning candles for ages and have never cleaned the walls.

GirlsAndPenguins · 07/10/2023 14:04

Oh gosh.
Id probably learn to live with it but it reminds me of the colour my nans walls use to go when she’d been smoking in her living room 🤦🏼‍♀️

Bananagirl23 · 07/10/2023 14:06

Sorry OP but the paint is too shiny and yellow - it’s like buttercream. Could you get a paint tone in the same family of soft fawn as the carpet, that is more mushroom/beige in hue? Although it might sound boring by comparison it would let the wallpaper stand out. I love the wallpaper btw!

Mummytotheboy · 07/10/2023 14:12

I once had my living room papered and I hated it. I had sample after sample, picked the one. Soon as i saw it on the wall it had to go. The painter and decorator had to redo it. Fortunately its my FIL so it was free! Just cost me 4 more rolls of paper.
Back to you though. I think you need a colour that as more earthy tones than yellow tones. I wouldnt go for a green though. My decor certainly isn't for everyone and I'd say is very marmite but if I had that colour green I'd go for pink. A pale pink, a cream with a pink hue and I'd definitely go for a matt finish. I hate glossy paint, makes the walls look sweaty!

Happymrs1966 · 07/10/2023 14:21

I would take a look at Dulux Natural Hessian.

Statice · 07/10/2023 14:47

If it was me, I would stick to a neutral paint colour but a v light mushroom shade. Friend’s living room and a pic from online.

Wallpaper looks blue not green 🤔 I don’t mind the wall colour. It’s better than magnolia or white

OnLockdown · 07/10/2023 14:56

DuvetsAndDreams · 06/10/2023 14:48

I would go for a dusky pink.

You are right to change it.

I was going to say this. Dusky pink or blush.

LAMPS1 · 07/10/2023 15:13

The wall paper would look better with any one of the many cool shades of white. The creamy yellowy shade is flattening and not uplifting. White truffle goes with dark green and a white ceiling.

MarryingMrDarcy · 07/10/2023 15:13

Yeah you’re not going mad OP, the paint and wallpaper aren’t complementing each other. Bit too much yellow in the paint, so as others have suggested something with an ashier tone should be a better fit. In the meantime I wonder if using lamps/adjusting the light would help soften it a bit until you can repaint?

Bunnycat101 · 07/10/2023 15:17

I think neutrals are actually incredibly hard to get right. When we did our living room I must have got 20 odd samples of what I thought was white/cream and was amazed how different they looked on the wall. Some looked green, some grey, some pink. Light makes such a massive difference. I think you have to spend a lot on testers to make sure it’s right.
