How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

Sorry OP but it’s not my taste colour wise at all. The paint colour reminds me of margarine and I really don’t like black wallpaper, it reminds me of Changing Rooms from the early noughties😅

Really sorry 😰😰😰

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/10/2023 10:36

I don’t like it but I think it’s because it’s reminiscent of the colour that you’d find a lot of rentals painted to be “neutral”.

I don’t like anything with a yellow tinge on my walks though, I like blue/ grey spectrum off-whites

IAmHeartless · 06/10/2023 10:37

The paint does look like cheap shiny magnolia that everyone used to use. I like the wall paper though! No idea what colour to put with it. But Matt paints look better.

MorningHood · 06/10/2023 10:37

Just realised the paper is dark green so ignore the black paper comment! If it was me I would paint over the cream colour (carefully!) myself with a softer colour like sage green or a mushroom, warmer tone.

LadyHag · 06/10/2023 10:38

Just do all the room in the same wallpaper, or scrap the paint and paper and do the full room in an emeralds green paint

Aylestone · 06/10/2023 10:38

Wallpapers really nice. Paints shit and doesnt match

Hollyhead · 06/10/2023 10:39

Yeah it’s too yellow toned, go for something with a brown or green base.

Mothership4two · 06/10/2023 10:39

It's difficut to say because the emerald and gold wallpaper look black and brown - to me. Is it just in your hall or throughout? If you hate it it will always bug you.

BusyCaz · 06/10/2023 10:42

Dulux White Cotton would look nice instead.

Gingernaut · 06/10/2023 10:42

I can see it's meant to 'match' or complement the gold in the wallpaper, but it just looks like magnolia

To match a wallpaper like that, it would need either a matching dark green or a more golden colour

twilightcafe · 06/10/2023 10:42

Repaint. The yellow/magnolia is too warm for that wallpaper.

Get paint swatches next time. Paint big squares. Leave them for a week to see what the colours look like in different lights/ times of day and night.

Treebark · 06/10/2023 10:42

I'd live with it and spend money on beautiful paintings / prints for the walls. The right 'thing in a frame' would make ALL the difference

Saz12 · 06/10/2023 10:43

Id leave it for a bit. But dont buy things specifically for that colour scheme just yet....
Put your own stuff in it and see if you can live with it. The paper looks more black-and-cream on my screen, so Im guessing the paint is also different from how it looks on my phone!

The obvious option is to redo the paint in the emerald of your wallpaper and add gold tones in any wall art etc.

TedMullins · 06/10/2023 10:44

Ooh yeah I’m with you OP it looks like standard issue landlord magnolia. I’d do it in a grey/green that matches the wallpaper personally, or a dark mushroom as someone already said.

FunnysInLaJardin · 06/10/2023 10:45

that wallpaper doesn't look emerald at all to my eyes. It looks dark blue

<misses point of the thread>

Gerrataere · 06/10/2023 10:45

Sorry op, it’s the same colour as my rental - I think it’s actual name is Landlord Beige. And I’m usually very ‘ah it will do’ about most things.

Beamur · 06/10/2023 10:48

I think that the colour goes with the paper but it's quite nondescript. Would have been better matt. It all looks a bit shiny and doesn't reflect the cost of your efforts. Your decorators have done a tidy job though.

MrsMariaReynolds · 06/10/2023 10:48

Yeah, the paint looks like that awful neutral Magnolia that is in every rental property I've ever seen.

heldinadream · 06/10/2023 10:50

The problem is that the colours you've got do not go with each other. I agree the cream walls are not great BUT they look worse because you've got a 'colder' neutral (is it white? hard to tell) on the front door and the floor tiles so these shades are all fighting with each other.

My plan of action would probably be this. Live with it for a little while to get used to it and see if your feelings change.

If they don't, I'd start by changing the front door colour to something that tones with the green of the wallpaper, possibly a paler green sage sort of green.
Then live with that and see how it feels. Meanwhile can you get a rug over the tiles, which while it'll cost money will be instant and no hassle. Gold/green shades. Or even reddish shades.

If changing the door and floor doesn't improve things then consider biting the bullet and re-do the walls.

Nitgel · 06/10/2023 10:50

i would wallpaper over the yellow paint, do you have any left?

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 06/10/2023 10:51

Mothership4two · 06/10/2023 10:39

This.

I personally prefer walles that are white or a colour that is - obviously - not white.

But that´s just me.

I would however say that there is some value to finishing everything and seeing how you get on with it (especially if you´re this stressed). Painting a few walls isn´t too difficult. You could do it in 1 - 2 years.

Graciebobcat · 06/10/2023 10:52

I think the paint colour goes really well with the wallpaper. It's the front door and the white floor tiles which are mismatched to the wallpaper and walls, for me.

bananaboats · 06/10/2023 10:54

Agree its very landlord magnolia. Not sure what would go with that wallpaper but is there a reason you couldn't just repaint it yourself?

loislovesstewie · 06/10/2023 10:55

The wallpaper doesn't look emerald to me.
