How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

We once painted the solid walls in a new conservatory in a colour that looked great on the swatch, but looked dreadful once the project was finished. We decided to repaint it in something that worked better in a highly sunlit room. The good news was that we only needed one coat as the original paint made the perfect undercoat!😁

I’m sorry I agree with the majority, it really doesn’t work. The paper could be lovely, but you’d need to pick a dark colour like emerald green or teal to go with it. That colour looks like the stuff you get in poorly maintained rentals,or budget hotels.

Agreed. I think emerald green would look lovely with the wallpaper

Plump82 · 06/10/2023 11:56

I go for white, or a mushroom toned beige similar to your carpet.

RedRobyn2021 · 06/10/2023 11:56

It reminds me of this flat I used to rent, so I hate it.

We get colours mixed with crown, we do a farrow & ball colour called Cornforth white, it's a very pale grey and is IMO really nice.

SollaSollew · 06/10/2023 11:59

I can see how you've got to where you've got to @RachyB86 , the colour of the paint tones very well with the gold in the wallpaper and in your first picture it's a great match. However over such a large area paint really does change how it feels from a small swatch that you match to another small swatch.

I'm going to agree with a PP upthread that said that your challenge, in pulling all this together, is that you've got white tiles, a grey door mat and white skirting/doors then beige carpet going up the stairs. You need something that's white but without too yellow or too grey an undertone. I would suggest Aterlier Ellis Warm White because it's such a fantastic [[https://www.atelierellis.co.uk/store/p/warm-white the finish isn't very robust though (I have used it in my house) so I'd get it colour matched in Dulux or Johnsons paint.

Sorry, just to add, white walls can look very cold and clinical with a modernist style/pieces so you've managed to avoid that, so that's a plus!

Gwendimarco · 06/10/2023 12:00

It’s not terrible OP. If you hadn’t titled your post ‘how bad is this’ I don’t suppose as many people would have been critical.
People won’t walk into your house and go ‘yuck’.

I’d suggest living with it for a while and really taking your time to consider what to do with it next. Life’s too short and money too tight to stress about it in my opinion.

The PP who said that adding pictures / mirrors / art etc to the wall makes a good point, much less bother than re-doing the whole thing.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/10/2023 12:00

@RedRobyn2021 that's what I would go with too- or as others have said a champagne tone. Given the grey door plus white floor tiles I would be tempted to go with the cornforth. I know lots of mumsnetters hate anything with a grey tinge but it can look good with white frames and accessories -- especially for halls and especially if the rest of the house isn't a 'grey fest' too

lost78300 · 06/10/2023 12:03

Definitely re paint using a light green.

lost78300 · 06/10/2023 12:04

Or take the paper to b&q and get a paint mixed to suit.

piscofrisco · 06/10/2023 12:06

It's a bit too yellow in tone I think. You need either a clean white or a grey toned neutral I think.

Fatcat00 · 06/10/2023 12:08

Try slipper satin by farrow and ball (get valspar to colour match) if you want to remain neutral. If not I’d go for a deep green tone

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/10/2023 12:08

I hate the wallpaper. It looks very dated with a wallpapered feature wall. And definitely doesn't work with the paint colour. I'd have a rethink about the whole look (and start by losing the wallpaper).

lemmein · 06/10/2023 12:08

Dulux do a visualiser app where you can pick the colour of your wallpaper and it'll show you paint shades that will compliment it.

Totalwasteofpaper · 06/10/2023 12:10

You have actually painted it rental yellow 😱

Paint is cheap so Def wouldn't keep the yellow.
Personally I would colour match the darker colour at Johnstone's and repaint it in that. You can break up the colour with mirrors and paintings if you want.

If you want a neutral take a look at colour matched slaked lime (there are multiple shades mid deep etc. I find it a versitle alternate to white.)

JohnFinlaysNewTeeth · 06/10/2023 12:12

Eek. The wallpaper is interesting, the colour and design are ok but the placement, all up the stairs but some walls not? Honestly I don’t think it’s ever going to look right. The pattern is very “grand” for the style of house you have. It might look good in a Victorian Hallway. Sorry, I’d start everything again if I were you.

Or at the very least get the paper colour matched and pain the walls the same colour as the paper. Possibly the woodwork too. And change doors.

PosyPrettyToes · 06/10/2023 12:15

It definitely has an air of cheap magnolia about it - maybe a forest green?

Thisisme23 · 06/10/2023 12:17

As you've gone to the expense of using decorators you should be happy with the final finish. So for me I'd definitely paint over the magnolia. I'd just use white.
I have a bedroom which is a mixture of dark green gold and white and looks good (well in my opinion!)

Auliza · 06/10/2023 12:17

I was torn between this wallpaper and the one I have up now, they are very similar. It is so hard to find a colour to match though. I ended up using the most pale grey that Dulux do which balances it really nicely, that would go really nice.

Personally I would change as agree with the comments about a the landlord magnolia and I don’t think it matches well with the paper.

Pr1mr0se · 06/10/2023 12:18

Clearly my interior decor is terrible as I think it looks nice.

Vettrianofan · 06/10/2023 12:18

I wouldn't go to all that effort to paint over it, instead buy some art for your walls. Much less hassle.

It's not an offensive colour that has been painted, honestly. It's not as bad as others are making out. You need a light colour in hallways or it becomes dingy.

Stressedafff · 06/10/2023 12:19

I think I’d go with just white opposed to anything else
Tiles and door are white plus the wallpaper I feel like for me personally any other colours would be too much going on x

Mirabai · 06/10/2023 12:19

I assumed it was the ghastly wallpaper you were concerned about. The paint colour is not exciting but it’s nothing offensive.

At least the paint goes with the gold on the wallpaper, if you paint it white it will not.

Lavenderosa · 06/10/2023 12:20

I would get a carpenter to put a dado rail on all the painted walls and then pay the painters to bring the ceiling white down the top half of the walls to the dado rail. Then get some paint from Valspar, colour matched to the background colour of the wallpaper and paint the bottom of the walls with that up to and including the dado rail. I'd then cover the white top half of the walls in lots of prints that have some of that dark green in and bring in complementary colours such as dusty pinks, duck eggs, sages and dusty blues. You could even have some of the dull gold of the wallpaper pattern in the prints or frames.

Edited

I agree.

You will be used to it in a few days, put some pictures up and forget about it.
