How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

I was really hoping to say no it's fine. But you're right it's not. It's awful. Reminds me of hospital corridors. Sorry 😬

therealcookiemonster · 06/10/2023 12:46

@RachyB86 if you can stomach a repaint, I would reccommend dulux heritage alabaster - would go well with your wall paper. also, I would add coving to round the room off and bring the two elements together.

Stravaig · 06/10/2023 12:49

@therealcookiemonster Alabaster White looks lovely!

ScrambledSmegs · 06/10/2023 12:51

Honestly I'd have matched the base colour of the wallpaper. I realise it seems like it would all be very dark but with your light carpet and white woodwork it wouldn't be overpowering.

I'm speaking from experience as we have a dark blue wallpaper with gold geometric patterns in our dining room, and dark blue paint on the chimney breast. Going pale would have been too much of a contrast in a 1990's Changing Rooms/'feature wall' style. Be brave, embrace the colour.

Also, follow Sophie Robinson and Abigail Ahern on Instagram and you'll never feel like your colour choices are too intense again Grin.

ActDottie · 06/10/2023 12:51

I don’t like it. It’s quite yellowy and I don’t think compliments the wallpaper well.

Curiosity101 · 06/10/2023 12:52

Slightly different take OP - but have you tried changing the colour of your bulbs in the hallway? Might be a less drastic solution (although appreciate only effective when the lights are on.

If you change the colour of your bulbs you can potentially strip out some of the yellowness. In the meantime definitely don't get anymore painted in that colour in other rooms. Lots of good (non yellow/magnolia) suggestions on here from PPs

How Lighting Affects Your Home’s Paint Color (and therefore how you perceive your home)

Why do your navy blue walls look black at certain times of day? And why does a normally white room appear yellow in the evenings? If you’ve ever experienced these perplexities, you can attest to how much light can affect our perception of color.

MotherOfLunatics · 06/10/2023 12:53

I would try to colour match the wallpaper as best as possible on the F&B website. It suggests complimentary colours.

Star0Fire · 06/10/2023 12:55

If it was me I couldn't continue to cope with decorators in I'd just want it finished. It's not the worst, so I would try and live with it for now. changing the bulbs was a good idea by a pp, I'd also add art or photos to the walls to take the focus off them. I do like the wallpaper though :)

MidnightMeltdown · 06/10/2023 12:57

Sorry OP I'm not keen. Landlords use that colour and it makes me feel as though someone has smoked a thousand fags in the room.

I've often wondered whether landlords choose it intentionally to cover nicotine stains.

Mistressanne · 06/10/2023 12:57

I think the cream is just too much for a small hallway. It looks better up your stairs and on the landing.
We have a similar colour in our lounge/diner but is so light that the colour looks much paler.

Hollyhead · 06/10/2023 13:00

The stairs carpet is a good tone with it - if you want a light neutral get a white that is the same colour tone as your carpet, it will gel together better.

RachyB86 · 06/10/2023 11:12

More pics in case this helps!

Yeah, sorry, it's an eye sore, it's gonna haunt you until you give up and repaint it, I think. Do it now since you knee deep in it anyway.

Wouldn't matching the green work better?

luckylavender · 06/10/2023 13:05

The paint is ok but I couldn't live with the wallpaper

Oldermum84 · 06/10/2023 13:08

It's very yellow. For something similar but less yellow try Dulux fine cream.

TemporarilyshyAF · 06/10/2023 13:09

It's too yellow sorry! I'm guessing the true shade of the wallpaper isn't coming across as it doesn't look emerald but what about a jade or emerald green? If you want a neutral then white or coolish stone colour. Not grey or magnolia.

I'd personally be tempted by a dusky mid pink for this wallpaper but fully accept that may be just me!

BungleandGeorge · 06/10/2023 13:12

I’m not keen on part wallpaper myself. The paint does match the paper though. I also think it looks a bit mismatched because you’ve got white and cream and paper together. I prefer colder whites but not with that paper. The hall looks fairly narrow and dark so I don’t think you can go all papered or with a darker paint. I’d probably just leave it tbh

IAmHeartless · 06/10/2023 13:13

Came back to say I really do love the wall paper!

Jessbow · 06/10/2023 13:15

You'd do well to take a peice of the paper to B&Q and get them to colour scan a point where all the geometric lines meet . se what their colour match machine comes up with

otherwise i'd err on the side of mushroom-y beige- way from the yellow tones

TenderDandelions · 06/10/2023 13:18

On this website they show it with a blue wall in a similar shade to the background paper.

Could you take an offcut of the paper to a paint shop and see if they can come up with some suggestions?

Also, take a look at the Dulux Visualiser app as you can scan a colour and it gives suggestions too.

I think you either need to paper the whole hallway in the wallpaper or paint the walls white like this picture which is very similar to your wallpaper and add some wood/tan colours or accessories as they have, it will ‘ground’ the look at make it look more cohesive, get rid of the chrome mirror, add wood frames and some natural plants.

NRTFT but I agree with those that say the problem is the white. The white ceiling and woodwork. From upstairs the yellow and gold look to compliment each other. Paint the woodwork the same green as the paper .

Redlarge · 06/10/2023 11:53

Before repainting could you try changing your lightbulbs to change the lighting and see if that helps. Its going to be costly to redo.

I was going to suggest this. Other brands are available but it is amazing what a difference fiddling about with a Philips hue "coloured" bulb can make.

The app has some presets.

A few photos/paintings might help to disguise the yellowy magnolia.

MidnightMeltdown · 06/10/2023 13:20

luckylavender · 06/10/2023 13:05

The paint is ok but I couldn't live with the wallpaper

I've got to admit, I don't like the wallpaper either. It looks like Christmas wrap. However, I think that it looks worse because of the magnolia paint.

The trouble is, the wallpaper is so dark that you need a light colour paint with it, but it's going to be difficult to find something to match it imo. Pink might work, as someone suggested above, but I'd get some samples to try first.

Not much help to you now but I got my house painted this year and just paid 2 hundred to an interior designer to do a paint consultation. She came to the house and matched it up to furniture already there, considered the lighting and finishes. Considering how much the painters and paint cost the paint consultation cost was tiny and well worth it. The colours in the whole house all flow well from room to room now too. I'd never have been able to do this myself.
