To want Jackie magazine to come back - exactly as it was?

If you don't remember Jackie this is meaningless. But it was THE heart of my 70s teen years.
Donny and Marie, David Cassidy, Marc and glam rock, Starsky and Hitch, disco, Cathy and Claire's problem page, quizzes, pop, very 70s drawings as illustrations for the fashion, beauty and story pages, posters ...

My friend and I used to borrow my older sister's Jackie magazines to laugh at the photo stories as they were so cheesy. The nostalgia!

Nat6999 · 06/10/2023 01:39

I've still got my Jackie Annuals, I loved My Guy & Just 17 as well. I miss Smash Hits & all the other music magazines, I used to tear out all the posters for my bedroom walls.

Nat6999 · 06/10/2023 01:47

Kids miss out on so much in the electronic age we live in now. Covering their walls in posters, saving to buy records, dashing to record shops to be the first to buy a new record, spending Saturday afternoons in town hanging out in record shops making lists of what records you wanted.

Bearcub101 · 06/10/2023 04:12

Jackie, Mixx, just 17, more, sugar i used to read them all. Then I remember reading Marie Clare? When I was about 16 and thinking I was so grown up and too old for the other teen mags 🤣

AngelaHamilton · 06/10/2023 04:20

From my younger days I loved Bunty, Mandy, Judy, Tammy, Jinty and probably more!
Misty I think was before my time but I read old annuals given to me by a cousin.

I'm afraid I thought the Four Marys were dull and I always read their stories quickly.

My favourite regulars included Miss Angel 'rescuing the waifs and strays of London' and one about a rich, popular girl and a poor girl who swapped lives, and Bella at the Bar (I bought a stand-alone reprint for DC and she thought it was bonkers- which it probably is, if anyone remembers).

There was also a girl whose complete knowledge of horses, including how to ride, came from books, and she had to bluff her way through riding school.

I loved the melodrama and it was a lovely time of the week settling down to read after they'd all arrived.

Later on I liked Smash Hits and Just 17.

Anyone remember Misty? It was full of spooky stories. More like a weekly graphic novel, really. I absolutely loved it.

You are in luck, Misty has been reissued as a collection, 3 volumes so far I think: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Misty-Pat-Mills/dp/1781084521/ref=asc_df_1781084521/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310961745507&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1821465192561960705&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006801&hvtargid=pla-538288783116&psc=1&th=1&psc=1

I used to get Jackie every week. Loved "Cathy and Claire". But, these days, do we really need to know how to make ourselves attractive to boys/men, and how to kiss?

Of it's time lol 😉

Covering their walls in posters

I remember the evening, shortly after I started secondary school, that I decided to cover my bedroom walls with 'pin ups' from Jackie and My Guy. It felt such a teenager-y thing to do!

Two years later, when I was an actual teenager, I took them all down and replaced them with art prints.

menopausalmare · 06/10/2023 17:50

I loved Mizz- out on Wednesday.

i loved seventeen with its free gift on the cover

I still have a wide toothed comb that came free with Just Seventeen.

I loved Mandy and would pay good money to get the collected Valda stories.

Oh I think I remember that one. Didn't she have some sort of healing jewel?

Me too on both points!

I would probably be quite upset if I lost that comb.

JaninaDuszejko · 07/10/2023 01:00

@AngelaHamilton she did indeed. She was actually very old but restored herself to youth by bathing in the mysterious flames of life.

LunaNorth · 07/10/2023 01:01

I remember one story from an annual that was about a girl who had facial scarring from an accident, so wore a mask and became a pop star called Gaye Traynor.

Why that is taking up so much of my memory I don’t know - but I loved it.

She restored her own youth with the jewel - she was actually ancient but appeared as a young girl.

LunaNorth · 07/10/2023 01:04

Oh my god! It was in the Tammy annual 1984! I found it!

WTF99 · 07/10/2023 01:08

Until the last 2 paragraphs you have described my life!
I never read a magazine now....except maybe Hello at the hairdressers. I'm all about the podcasts!

LunaNorth · 07/10/2023 01:09

I’ve just managed to find the annual on Amazon!

I bought it!

I’m so excited!

Floatlikeafeather2 · 07/10/2023 01:15

My Mum had Woman and Woman's Own delivered with the papers and my sister and I were also allowed one "comic" a week each. I worked my way up from The Beano through Bunty, Diana, Jackie, Petticoat, think there might have been one called 19 here but might be imagining that, then Cosmopolitan when I went off to university, if I could afford it. I loved them all and they're very rooted in stages of my life, but I actually never read magazines now.

Notlaughingalot · 07/10/2023 01:24

I never really graduated from Bunty,!

shortandpaleandoldandugly · 07/10/2023 01:25

Loved it. And also love the fact that it's called Jackie because of Jacqueline Wilson! Fun fact not everyone knows.

Needmorelego · 07/10/2023 08:05

@shortandpaleandoldandugly apparently that's not true 🙁
Jacqueline Wilson was working at DC Thomson at the time but has said it was just a coincidence.
Plus she spells her name Jacky rather than Jackie.

shortandpaleandoldandugly · 07/10/2023 09:26

@Needmorelego it is true. I attended an "audience with Jacqueline Wilson" event a few years ago and she spoke about it.
