To want Jackie magazine to come back - exactly as it was?

If you don't remember Jackie this is meaningless. But it was THE heart of my 70s teen years.
Donny and Marie, David Cassidy, Marc and glam rock, Starsky and Hitch, disco, Cathy and Claire's problem page, quizzes, pop, very 70s drawings as illustrations for the fashion, beauty and story pages, posters ...

To want Jackie magazine to come back - exactly as it was?

After I'd started secondary school I was permitted to graduate from Mandy and Debbie to Jackie. A few weeks later my mum declared that she'd had a flick through my Jackie and thought it was "stupid" and had told the newsagent not to include it in our order from now on. I can understand that she might not have wanted 12-year-old me reading about boyfriends and agitating for make-up, and also that she might not have wanted my younger sisters (one on the Dandy and Beano, the other on Twinkle) getting hold of it and asking her, or me, "What's a period?"

Kendodd · 05/10/2023 09:15

The only magazines i buy now are the Christmas editions of Radio Times and Good Housekeeping.
Both pure nostalgia.

Flossflower · 05/10/2023 09:18

Yes I loved Jackie!
Does anyone else remember Rave magazine? That is going back a bit. 1960s.

ImMrsNesbitt · 05/10/2023 09:22

My husband was the main character in a Jackie magazine photo love story in 1979. It was a two parter! He was also a pin up in a jokey series of stereotypical tradespeople. He was a student in London at the time.

KimberleyClark · 05/10/2023 09:29

I remember as a pre teen finding a copy of Petticoat magazine at my gran’s house that had been left behind by an older cousin. That was an eye opener.

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 05/10/2023 09:29

The thrill of my mum bringing home my Mandy magazine when it was out is such a fabulous memory. My husband has bought me a few old Mandy/Bunty annuals as Christmas presents and I treasure them and love him for even thinking of that as a gift.

Mary46 · 05/10/2023 09:30

Great memories op. Loved smash hits Bros were big at the time I loved the posters!!

crumpet · 05/10/2023 09:30

Just 17 and Smash Hits were my era. But I remember buying a huge box of back issues of Jackie at a jumble sale which I treasured for ages. I was probably a bit you go for them and my mother would have been horrified had she known some of the contents, but they were fabulous

LunaNorth · 05/10/2023 09:36

I loved Jackie in the late 80s - all the in-jokes about ‘The Steve’ and the chatty style it was written in.

I loved ‘Girl’ magazine before that. They clearly used Sylvia Young girls as models, because I remember spotting a couple of Grange Hill actors on the fashion pages!

All the clothes seemed to come from Pink Soda, Hennes and BOY. Completely out of reach for us Northerners back then, but so exotic 😃

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/10/2023 09:37

I loved my Jackie annuals that I got for Christmas - my 11th Christmas addition was when I discovered myself astrology 🤣🤣. Oh the shame of me telling my friends about their personality traits.

DC1214 · 05/10/2023 09:40

Nikki was where it was at in 1988, was a stepping stone from Bunty to Hi!

Oh god, that is so precious - you have a real one there.

Echobelly · 05/10/2023 09:49

I loved Minx which existed briefly at then end of the 90s. It's kind of brushed off as the 'ladette' magazine but honestly it was the only time I saw a women's magazine that assumed we had sense of humour, taste in music beyond mainstream pop and a life outside thinking and talking about men all the time. Anyone else remember it?

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 09:03

I'd prefer Bunty and Tammy etc. I loved the stories. Graphic novels and comic books are hugely popular among tween/teen girls so once a week getting a new chapter of at least half a dozen different stories would be absolutely brilliant.

I loved Bunty and Mandy etc. I do think it is a great shame those sort of comics aren't available now. When DD was young I did get a Bunty and a Mandy annual for her for Christmas, but I think it was mainly nostalgia from me!

I did love Jackie though, especially Cathy and Claire. I had the little compilation book a PP posted about and I have a compilation Jackie annual somewhere that DH got me for Christmas once

knackeredcat · 05/10/2023 09:52

@Echobelly I loved Minx magazine - Tanga Hewlett-Packard rings a bell 😆

And the practical advice about feeding yourself cheaply when you've spent all your money on clothes and going out within the first week or so

5foot5 · 05/10/2023 09:53

Now ... on the rare occasions I buy a mag it might be Woman & Home or Platinum.

Or if I'm feeling particularly racy, the Christmas Radio Times.

@JFDIYOLO Sounds like you are ready to move on to The Lady

Roughashouses · 05/10/2023 09:57

I did work experience at (memory a bit hazy but, I think) Mizz, IPC Magazines in a big swanky office in Southwark when I was 14/15. Had a security pass to get in and everything, thought I was a budding journalist.

Branleuse · 05/10/2023 10:01

I went from Bunty, to Jackie, to justseventeen to Mizz to More.
Then we got the internet, but I still love a magazine here and there.

There is a huge gap in the market for teenager magazines tbh. They're so vacuous and aimed really young

VesperLynne · 05/10/2023 10:18

Kids and teens have TikTok now and the Kardashian’s !.

stayathomer · 05/10/2023 10:19

Another for bunty but also many and Judy, but back to them being seperately done, not merged!!

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 05/10/2023 10:20

I used to love more magazine. That in my eyes was very racey. Some of those articles I read more than a few time.

MoonshineandMagic · 05/10/2023 10:24

Position of the Fortnight!

Echobelly · 05/10/2023 10:26

@knackeredcat - I think it also once had an article on how to throw a punch 😆more women's media needs to be like that. 😛

ApolloandDaphne · 05/10/2023 10:27

I loved the Jackie magazine. When it came out we all pored over it in school. And Smash Hits for posters and the lyrics to songs. Ah those heady 70's days

Bbq1 · 05/10/2023 10:47

Anyone remember Catch Magazine? Probably circa 1990?
