To want Jackie magazine to come back - exactly as it was?

If you don't remember Jackie this is meaningless. But it was THE heart of my 70s teen years.
Donny and Marie, David Cassidy, Marc and glam rock, Starsky and Hitch, disco, Cathy and Claire's problem page, quizzes, pop, very 70s drawings as illustrations for the fashion, beauty and story pages, posters ...

Did anyone read Misty? I loved that, it had stories that were a bit spooky. Loved Photo-Love too :)

Chiaseedling · 07/10/2023 09:33

I do remember it although was a teen in the 80s!
My favourite was Smash Hits though - I bought a hardback compilation book about 15? Years ago and looking back there weee some v dodgy characters featured like Glitter & Saville!! It did make me cringe a bit. I’ve still got it somewhere- good memorabilia but ever so slightly tainted…

@Needmorelego it is true. I attended an "audience with Jacqueline Wilson" event a few years ago and she spoke about it.

I was there too!!

shortandpaleandoldandugly · 07/10/2023 09:36

@Chiaseedling I'd love her to do it again so my youngest can go!

TerfTalking · 07/10/2023 09:42

@JFDIYOLO you must be a similar age to me as your OP resonates so much!

I also moved from Jackie to Company then Cosmopolitan. I also choose Woman & Home at the hairdressers, I'm also partial to the recipes in the Sainsbury's magazine.

My girl crush at the time was Lesley Ash who featured regularly on the cover, she was so pretty.

I had Smash Hits and No1 magazine on alternate weeks, then Q. And sometimes Look (for some reason the feature that sticks in my mind is one where they gave £10, £50 and £150 to a celeb/staff writer/ beauty ed to go out shopping - for a provincial teen in 1990, £150 seemed an unthinkable amount of cash to splash on yourself, even if you did buy a 'classic trench', a Boy London cropped t-shirt and a Chanel red lipstick with it).

But I really loved the Jackie annuals from the early 80s with detailed breakdowns of how to achieve Bananarama haystack hair, while avoiding being cornered by Handsy Harry at your mate's 'parents away!' weekend house party.

Needmorelego · 07/10/2023 11:16

@shortandpaleandoldandugly I stand corrected 🙂
(Although I've read interviews where she said it wasn't true)

Spikeyball · 07/10/2023 11:27

I remember in the 1st year of secondary, every week one girl buying Jackie and it being passed around the class during form and lunch time. Articles like is it ok to kiss on your first date and in the stories all the girls/young women being secretaries.

My nan used to bring me Twinkle when she came on her weekly visits so Twinkle reminds me of her.

Spikeyball · 07/10/2023 11:31

And 18 year olds getting engaged to their boyfriends and this seeming so grown up when you were 11. And absolutely no living together

I miss the 90's More magazine

Me too!

I have read it's an urban myth that JW herself perpetuated.

Blue Jeans, 'Dear Cathy & Claire A boy French kissed me, am I pregnant...'

Redlarge · 07/10/2023 11:42

I was too young for jackie, however found a suitcase full of old ones in my grandmas garage and used to love sneaking off to read them when we would visit. In fact id love to have the opportunity to go through them now with a big mug of tea and biscuits. Id really enjoy it.

The only magazines i buy now are the Christmas editions of Radio Times and Good Housekeeping.
Both pure nostalgia.

We would go through and circle all the christmas programmes we wanted to watch x

Are you me, @JFDIYOLO ?! I also went from Bunty to Jackie, and my mother disapproved, fearing Jackie to be somewhat racy. It was certainly educational, I did learn about boys. Also some basics of personal presentation which seemed to centre around the importance of plucked eyebrows.
Loved Cathy and Claire.

JFDIYOLO · 07/10/2023 14:34

So I'm 60 and several have said they feel I must be them as their magazine journeys are so similar! 🤗

Starsky and Hutch were huge among ny friend group.

I will drop in a side mag note - I also got the monthly Starburst as I did and still do love SF and fantasy. That set me apart from the other girls, as it wasn't a thing at school, and was not really the big mainstream interest it is now. The thing I didn't really talk about ...

Aaaah Jackie! I loved Cathy and Claire. The stages of my youth were:

Beano: 8-11 years
Jackie: 11-14 years
Just Seventeen 13-16 years
Cosmo: 16+

Who remembers The Four Marys in Bunty – Simpy, Raddy, Fieldy, and Cotty? And their nemeses, Mabel and Veronica?

…Dr Gull and Miss Creef.

Maireas · 07/10/2023 15:36

I loved the Four Marys. Also Miss Creef and Dr Gull. Brilliant stories.

Julesy101 · 18/01/2026 22:58

I might have been at that photoshoot with you!!

This is almost the same as me except that between Beano and Jacky there was something else for a very short time - possibly Girl? Then Jackie until 14, when my sister left for university and I was allowed to take over Petticoat. I was thrilled. It was a brilliant magazine, though in hindsight, probably not really suitable for a 14 year old. Those were the ones my mother allowed us to order from the papershop and so were delivered. I got a Saturday job at 15 and my go to for buying myself was Cosmo and, for a year, at 17, I bought Marie Claire, in French, because my French teacher suggested it. (It wasn't available in English over here at that time and was seen as very glam but I hated it and begrudged the money I spent on it.)
Does anyone remember Petticoat?
