To want Jackie magazine to come back - exactly as it was?

If you don't remember Jackie this is meaningless. But it was THE heart of my 70s teen years.
Donny and Marie, David Cassidy, Marc and glam rock, Starsky and Hitch, disco, Cathy and Claire's problem page, quizzes, pop, very 70s drawings as illustrations for the fashion, beauty and story pages, posters ...

To want Jackie magazine to come back - exactly as it was?
OP posts:

I grew up reading Jackie (I was a teenager in the early 80s) and was excited to find an old copy of it a while back, but was horrified by just how much sexism and body-shaming there was in it. The ultimate goal was to make yourself attractive to boys, even if that meant starvation diets, dumbing yourself down, tons of makeup and so on. I think I moved on from Jackie to Spare Rib magazine by about the age of 15...

My grandmother used to walk to town every week, buy Jackie and my sister Twinkle roll them up in a tube and go across the road to the post office and send them to us every single week without fail . Such a lovely thing to do. Getting a bit teary remembering it .

We would swap the Toners and Shaders freebie hair dyes from Jackie. Although one natural blonde in my class came into school with beautiful pink hair, having used the brunette packet by mistake!

I loved the hand illustrated fashion pages, with the elongated limbs!

In 6th form several people regularly posed for the Blue Jeans photo stories, to much hilarity.

Loved the albums every Christmas. Googled the 82 and 83 issues the other day and I clearly recall the front covers.

MyBigFatCapybara · 05/10/2023 17:12

I was a Just 17 girl myself.

Anyone remember Misty? It was full of spooky stories. More like a weekly graphic novel, really. I absolutely loved it.

Misty was my absolute favourite. My brother was into The Unexplained magazine so I'd also nick that off him.

Yes! Loved it but it was short lived compared to Bunty and Judy comics. My grandma used to buy them all and post to me in bundles monthly 💜

Same with tube to post - in brown paper that had a tear strip to open

Did anyone have the 'Jackie Book of Destiny'? You had to ask a question then close your eyes and pick a symbol which would correspond to an answer.

I used this quite religiously when I was 12 😄

There's a little book with loads of Cathy & Claire problems. Some are very funny (some aren't).

I look back and think of some of the advice they gave girls who were probably gay did more harm than good but section 28 and all that . There was not much else they could have done I suppose .

And bunty i do not know if it also in the uk.

And Judy too (and yes, in the UK).

TheLightProgramme · 05/10/2023 19:59

I never really got into magazines. I remember shout & smash hits, bliss, sugar etc (yes, 90s teen) but i remember buying them and always being vaguely underwhelmed/disappointed when I'd flicked through them and found fuck all to actually read.

TheLightProgramme · 05/10/2023 20:02

I think i also remember not really having money for this sort of thing at 13/14, and realising if i spent £2 every week on a magazine, it was like half my pocket money gone, it never quite felt worth it

UndertheCedartree · 05/10/2023 21:24

My mum used to buy me a magazine if I was unwell. And I long to do so for DD but there's nothing now.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 05/10/2023 22:01

Twinkle as a little girl, then Bunty in junior school and possibly another one which had a cut out doll on the back cover . Secondary school / early teens there was Jackie, blue jeans, and mates . Mates was a bit more raunchy. This was late 70s.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 05/10/2023 22:09

I've gone completely downhill, to Chat and Take a Break.

Me too @TheShellBeach ! I used to buy all the glossies but stopped a few years back .

HollieHobbie · 05/10/2023 22:55

I loved Bunty and Mandy comics, then I moved up to Jackie and Blue Jeans. Got Just Seventeen from the first edition. My mother hated it but my Nan read it and said it was good! I loved magazine day.

Jakadaal · 05/10/2023 23:18

80smum my older sister used to get Fab 208 and Disco 45 so we could learn all of the words to the songs

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 05/10/2023 23:21

Oh god i LOVED that magazine !

I used to get SO excited about going to the newsagent to collect it .

Happy times 😊

Appalonia · 05/10/2023 23:35

Fab thread!😂

Createausername1970 · 05/10/2023 23:40

Lying on my bed, with my copy of Jackie, a bottle of Coke with a straw, and bag of chip sticks to hand, that was a typical Saturday morning 😁

TheDogsMother · 05/10/2023 15:55

Ahhh loved Jackie magazine ! I made the leap from Beano and Whizzer & Chips straight into teen angst and pull out posters.

I used to read Whizzer and Chips too! Can't remember the characters very well, was there one called Shiner? Because he always got into trouble and ended up with a black eye?

And then progressed onto Jackie, then Viz and now for the last million years, Private Eye. I still enjoy a regular magazine.

Justleaveitblankthen · 06/10/2023 00:29

Oh happy days!
The things you learned aswell.
I remember pontificating to all my classmates on how their hymen may already be broken - especially if they ride horses or use Tampons 🤭

moonriverandme · 06/10/2023 00:55

Loved the Four Marys & Lorna Drake & (Miss Mayne). I think I've got an annual in a cupboard. I remember getting a Scotty dog brooch as a free gift too, I hardly slept the night before I was so excited for the paper boy to deliver it. Simpler times. I graduated to Jackie, Petticoat & Honey.
