To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

Companies like Avon spend a long time crafting words so that they read positively to the non-cynical eye. From the link given by @JanoirLondon here is an example. What it says is “look we don’t test on animals but we can’t say what happens in China with our products”. If a cosmetics company trades in China it’s complicit in animal cruelty. They don’t HAVE to trade in China, lots of more ethical companies don’t.

It may be an uncomfortable truth to many who sell Avon who care about this. The anger should be directly at Avon by those duped into selling it and buying it believing it to be cruelty free. It’s just one more lie by an MLM.

To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

@YouOKHun
Christ I'm an Avon lady..u r very rude
U have no idea

It is apparently you who have no idea. You persist in believing Avon is cruelty free. Avon sells in China. To sell in China a company MUST TEST ON ANIMALS. It's the law in China that all products sold there undergo testing on animals. Illuminating you to this fact is not being rude.

potatoheads · 08/10/2023 20:28

Avon gets around the Chinese animal testing requirements by modifying their formulas for the Chinese market and using ingredients that have already been tested on animals.
They don't actively test but they use the results of animal testing. It's really a very cynical way of saying they don't test on animals. They just use stuff that was tested on animals. Semantics

JanoirLondon · 08/10/2023 20:45

@potatoheads
But you need to see that Peta and Leaping Bunny are endorsing avon and are committed to supporting them.
Unless Peta and Leaping Bunny are lying on their websites. Everything is going in the right direction

SurprisedWithAHorse · 08/10/2023 21:12

The PETA link is very clear that while they've made welcome progress, they're not cruelty free.

They're an MLM that isn't cruelty free although tries to imply that they are, and their reps are rude, insulting, entitled and think strangers have a responsibility for their junk mail. I can buy great quality, fully cruelty free and vegan cosmetics and toiletries online, so why would I buy from these people?

YouOKHun · 08/10/2023 21:12

We dealt with the PETA issue upthread @JanoirLondon. How did you do in your CSE Reading Comprehension exam?

@SurprisedWithAHorse
Avon are accepted to Leaping Bunny so are now cruelty free.xx

They’re not cruelty free. Your own link just a few posts above shows this!

I'm sure Avon will be proud of the professional way you have represented their brand on this thread Smile

YouOKHun · 08/10/2023 21:44

Yes @JanoirLondon has been extremely helpful in hammering home the anti MLM message about the way in which Avon and the like mislead their sign ups. As she flounces off the thread for the second time I can only say thank you and hope that her contributions have convinced anyone sitting on the fence about MLMs that they really are scams.

potatoheads · 08/10/2023 22:53

Separately, the quality of Avon is pretty low. They just aren't on par with other similar priced or even cheaper products

I once bought a house where the previous owner was an Avon lady. OMG was I sick of people putting their catalogues and orders (including money or cheques) through my letter box. I ended up taking them round to her and she assured me she had told everyone her new address (which to be fair was on a printed label on the catalogues.)

In the end there was just this one woman who had it down to a T. She would come down the path (husband waiting in the car with the engine running), slip it through the letter box and then back into the car in a flash. This went on for months until one day I saw her in time, grabbed the catalogue and legged it after her. Apparently she knew very well the address had changed, but it was more convenient for her to drop it off at mine as it was on her way somewhere. Bloody nerve. I didn't buy the stuff (used to tell them I was allergic, but really I just couldn't be bothered) so I certainly wasn't in the market for being the Avon Lady's assistant.

Why didn't you just leave it outside , not your problem

If this is the level of the average Avon seller, they're not doing themselves any favours

It kind of is, though, as it's leaving litter on your own property!

I think I was bothered because there was money with it. TBH it was a long time ago and I was a much nicer person then - although I did give her short shrift when I finally caught up with her (the customer, not the Avon lady), so maybe I wasn't so nice.

Surely have a great life slagging people off!! needs to be Mumsnet’s new advertising campaign

I would have just left it after the first couple - or even taken it in and handed it back when she came to find out why her order was not delivered

If she can't be arsed to take it, then her problem

But isn't that effectively the case for all cosmetics? All of them use ingredients that were tested on animals at some point, even if it was years (decades) ago.

I've not looked into this for a long time - most of the stuff I use is from Superdrug and has the leaping bunny symbol on it, so I assume it's ok, but I don't assume none of the ingredients have ever been tested, just not recently and not by them.

I did know about Avon because they used to own Liz Earle and it was a great disappointment to LE customers, as LE products had the Leaping Bunny on too.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 10/10/2023 12:44

Maybe we need a new thread on animal testing!

YouOKHun · 11/10/2023 00:06

I see it’s been announced that Avon will be selling products through Superdrug in store and online. That’s going to make it EVEN harder for all those reps fighting over customers. This alone should demonstrate that Avon really does not give a shit about the reps.

koalaknickers · 11/10/2023 10:31

There are several brands with integrity who will not sell in China. No company NEEDS to sell in China. Some do and act as if they have no choice, but it's all about the profit with them. Then they hide behind China's "rules" but they can say no to it all if they choose to.

koalaknickers · 11/10/2023 11:19

Beginning in 2008, the conduct of various employees and executives of Avon were investigated for possible violations of the law, including bribery and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

In China, specialty products that require degrees of animal testing include but are not limited to: sunscreen products, whitening/pigmentation products, and hair dye/perm or growth products. Despite laws that require animal testing in some countries, Avon chooses to distribute its products in those jurisdictions.

In October 2013, Avon announced the closure of its branch in France at the end of that month. Its French employees accused it of keeping the workers in the dark for months and not acting in line with the company's publicly stated values of being a socially responsible company that upholds values of trust, respect and integrity and a culture of "open and candid communication."

This was followed by an announcement via Facebook on February 15, 2018, that Avon Australia and New Zealand would close by the end of the year. The company has attracted criticism for poor communication with its customers and employees.
