To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

I wouldn’t buy from Avon on principle that’s it’s a MLM. I also thought they were being banned as it’s morally wrong.

I think pyramid schemes are banned. MLMs obviously skate very close to the boundary but get away with it somehow.

They get away with it by having a product for sale so they are, in theory, not a pure recruitment scheme - you can have a sales only business as a rep (in practice if you want to stand a chance of being in the minority to make money, you have to recruit). And that is where Avon gets its "better MLM" reputation because it has products that are actually ok and are not ridiculously expensive for what they are. Some MLMs both the business model and the products/pricing are a problem.

GreenEyedGiant · 06/10/2023 18:40

I just want to add that the last 2 Avon books posted through my door were collected by MEN. One did it for years and I never ordered off him but he still persisted in leaving them every so often. The other is a chirpy older man who I've never met before but seems to have taken over younger mans patch.

It's a war out there.

YouOKHun · 06/10/2023 19:07

@enchantedsquirrelwood you’re right, pyramid schemes are illegal and the definition of an illegal trading scheme according to the Competition & Markets Authority is any trading scheme that more heavily on recruitment than selling a product or service. In MLM most of the sales are within the scheme. No MLM publishes how much of its revenue comes from retailing product to genuine customers outside the scheme. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck …

@YouOKHun
Forgive me but are u in the USA?
It's certainly not like that in the UK.
I'm only a small girl in the Avon business and it works for me.

JanoirLondon · 06/10/2023 19:19

@Parker231
No I'm in UK.. why would I lie?????

@JanoirLondon here’s Avon Worldwide’s current comments on being cruelty free. They still trade in China, China tests on animals. Which is why PETA has given them some credit for the improvements they’ve made but not gone the whole hog. Other organisations monitoring cruelty-free companies believe trading in China makes a company complicit in animal cruelty.

BTW I’m in the UK, down the road from you if your user name is anything to go by. The research in the US absolutely covers what happens here and the loss rates are the same here. The victims of MLM I’ve spoken to are here too. The only difference is that MLMs in the US have to publish an Income Disclosure, they don’t have to here.

I sold Avon for a few years. I really enjoyed it. Met a lot of my neighbours, some of them became good friends. Some people put a note in to say “thanks but no thanks” so I didn’t leave one for about a year (just in case there were new people moved in or they had changed their minds). I earned about £150 per campaign & got lots of free products. I put very little effort in. I only packed it in because I moved & the new area already had plenty of agents. I could have gone online but that didn’t appeal to me.

The "fake it til you make it" vibe is strong with some posters here!

Anyone who crunches the numbers can see that mathematically the model cannot work for late adopters

JanoirLondon · 06/10/2023 20:11

@Whatonearthdidicomeinherefor
Can u believe the negative comments on here. Some people have nothing better to do!

YouOKHun · 06/10/2023 20:14

Can you believe the delusional comments on here? Some people here could do better.

Oh, come on. Now you're not even trying. You stuck it out this far, why are you suddenly getting so lazy?

JanoirLondon · 06/10/2023 20:22

@YouOKHun
Avon are adamant on their stance against Animal cruelty and I only go by what I am told. As i have said..I am an Avon lady with lots of happy customers and I get my commission so I am happy.
Now If u have your own views then thats ok. I am only simply pointing out that as someone who works for Avon it is a very good business for someone who wants a little part time job or alternatively someone who wants to earn big money. A lot of comments are coming from people who simply don't know anything about Avon. Dont mock what you don't know!!
No offence intended. But can u see where I'm coming from?
My customers love it!!!

JanoirLondon · 06/10/2023 20:24

@SurprisedWithAHorse
Coz I'm just an Avon lady..which shows anyone can do this. You can be big time or a small time Gal/boy.
Come on I'm not digital!!!!
Just worked out how to reply!!!!

SurprisedWithAHorse · 06/10/2023 20:40

What's Avon's biggest competitor? I think they've got a plant in here.

Whatonearthdidicomeinherefor · 06/10/2023 20:44

Why are some people so nasty?

I get exactly where you’re coming from because I’ve heard it all before. My tip for you is to not believe what you’re told, especially if it’s coming from an upline or MLM with a vesting interest in pulling the wool over your eyes.

A lot of the critical comments are coming from people who are, with respect, clearly better informed than you, both about Avon and on the way MLMs operate. You get your commission and you’re happy and that’s fine and I think that anyone who is happy to treat it as a pocket money endeavour and doesn’t need an income is probably not going to feel too bad, but that’s not the case for most people who enter MLM, they really need a consistent income and it’s not what they discover after slogging away at it. Your experience doesn’t change the broader facts. As for making big money in Avon or any MLM; yes it IS possible, but is it probable? No. Avon has consistently refused to publish an Income Disclosure which would go some way to revealing just how many of its sign ups make big money, but is it’s anything like all the other MLMs that do publish an ID it’s likely to show that over 90% make nothing.

I’m not mocking Avon because there is nothing to laugh about and I’m not mocking MLM victims either because I feel bad for anyone who is misled. Can you see where I’m coming from?

The books belong to the rep. Expect an invoice if you recycle / destroy it - and Avon reps get support from Avon to pursue CCJs. Not worth it. Just leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag

Utter rubbish. Why do you state things that are patently untrue?

Leaving unsolicited material is discarding it. If the householder is good enough to leave a note and the brochure in the plastic bag then that's a bonus, they don't have to.

CCJs and Avon-support to recover costs... what absolute twaddle.

And pay double for every exclamation mark?

JanoirLondon · 06/10/2023 21:35

@YouOKHun
you do seem to be very well informed and that is fine. I have been at Avon for 23 years and I do not actually agree with your postings because I know otherwise.

The original post probably didn't expect all this gumph. My posting was just educating that Avon has a purpose to a lot of people who have become my friends and who look forward to the monthly brochure. If the negative nancies don't like it then so be it..even if they haven't seen a book!!!

I’ve never seen a book but wouldn’t order due to its morally questionable MLM.
