To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

If it’s the first one you’ve had, just leave it out in a plastic bag and with a note asking them not to post another one through. That’s what I did.

Can't see problem but that's your choice

You’re ok with MLM????

CruCru · 07/10/2023 14:11

I know the discussion has moved on (!) a bit but it’s always so awkward when someone comes to the door to ask for their catalogue back. Thankfully it hasn’t happened for years.

While I was at university, a woman came to ask for her catalogue back. She was fairly irritable (I think she was gearing up to shout at me for throwing it away) but we did have it. It’s just that my boyfriend at the time had cut a load of pictures out to stick on a letter to a friend overseas (he was weird - don’t ask). I didn’t tell her this when I gave it back to her.

Julimia · 07/10/2023 22:32

Why not? It actually sells itself and has certainly kept up with the times. Its not really door to door anymore ., much wider really. I remember soapnon a roap too...Daisies won't tell!!

@YouOKHun
Avon are adamant on their stance against Animal cruelty and I only go by what I am told. As i have said..I am an Avon lady with lots of happy customers and I get my commission so I am happy.
Now If u have your own views then thats ok. I am only simply pointing out that as someone who works for Avon it is a very good business for someone who wants a little part time job or alternatively someone who wants to earn big money. A lot of comments are coming from people who simply don't know anything about Avon. Dont mock what you don't know!!
No offence intended. But can u see where I'm coming from?
My customers love it!!!

Avon sell in China. Anything sold in China has to test in animals. See the second part of this statement.

Basically they don't test on animals....unless they have to test on animals....

They test on animals

....Respect for animal welfare is a cornerstone of Avon’s product safety philosophy. In fact, Avon was the first major cosmetic company to end animal testing nearly 25 years ago and we do not test on animals today. Instead, we use non-animal product safety testing methods.

Unfortunately, a few countries require additional safety testing, which may include animal testing. Avon, in partnership with other organizations, works to help advance government acceptance of alternative non-animal testing methods. But if a compromise cannot be reached, we must comply with the testing required by local law. Animal testing is an issue faced by all global beauty companies.....

Which can be summarised as "where its profitable to avoid testing on animals we puff about not testing on animals, where its profitable to test on animals, we test on animals".

A fine ethical stance.

partypant · 08/10/2023 14:06

@C8H10N4O2 absolutely right. Sadly people like @JanoirLondon sell these unethical products and think they are cruelty free when Avon themselves admit they are not when you dig past the headline statement.

YouOKHun · 08/10/2023 14:27

Multilevel marketing companies have a long history of lying to their main customers (who are also their distributors). When ticked off by the Advertising Standards Authority they blame people like Janior for not obeying their rules. However there are lots of lies that can be traced back to the corporate source. Here are some examples.
”Doterra can cure Ebola” - traced back to company training and Doterra in trouble with the FDA in the US.
”Young Living can cure Ebola” see above
”Arbonne’s product offers “immunity” (during the pandemic) - traced back to training approved by Arbonne
”Avon is cruelty free” a few years ago this was demonstrated to be completely untrue so it’s now, “when convenient Avon does not test on animals but if the market is lucrative we will overlook it”.
”FM Work guarantees you a good income” from top bots and HQ. Complaint upheld by ASA. FM blamed “one badly behaved upline”. Income claims, even those that are implied as guaranteed or typical aren’t allowed but they are ALL guilty of this which is no doubt how JanoirLondon got fooled.

There are many more examples. MLMs operate in a legally questionable twilight world where they make up many of the rules as they go along and ignore the ones that legitimate companies have to comply with.

I do feel sorry for those duped into MLM but I wouldn’t “support” them by buying from them or putting myself out to return a catalogue left on my property @Houseplanter (sorry, I’m guilty of filling up your thread with anti comment about pyramid schemes so just answering the original question!).

HorseySurprise · 08/10/2023 14:38

I once bought a house where the previous owner was an Avon lady. OMG was I sick of people putting their catalogues and orders (including money or cheques) through my letter box. I ended up taking them round to her and she assured me she had told everyone her new address (which to be fair was on a printed label on the catalogues.)

In the end there was just this one woman who had it down to a T. She would come down the path (husband waiting in the car with the engine running), slip it through the letter box and then back into the car in a flash. This went on for months until one day I saw her in time, grabbed the catalogue and legged it after her. Apparently she knew very well the address had changed, but it was more convenient for her to drop it off at mine as it was on her way somewhere. Bloody nerve. I didn't buy the stuff (used to tell them I was allergic, but really I just couldn't be bothered) so I certainly wasn't in the market for being the Avon Lady's assistant.

JanoirLondon · 08/10/2023 15:30

@YouOKHun
Christ I'm an Avon lady..u r very rude
U have no idea

YouOKHun · 08/10/2023 15:35

It isn’t “being rude” to criticise MLM and point out that people are being duped @JanoirLondon. Your upline has probably told you that criticism of Avon is done by people who have failed as Avon reps or are “unhappy people”. It’s all very cult-like.

YouOKHun · 08/10/2023 17:11

@JanoirLondon righty ho, whatever you say. No one is being duped by their MLM pyramid scheme. Shame on me and all of us who have mentioned some of the facts. Shame on the Federal Trade Commission for prosecuting some of them, shame on the economists like Dr Stacy Bosley for pointing out they’re a scam. shame on Professor Stein for pointing out the cult like control MLMs have. They’re all wrong, JanoirLondon knows best.

JanoirLondon · 08/10/2023 17:22

@YouOKHun
Avon a cult..now that's very funny!!

AzureBlue99 · 08/10/2023 17:34

In my small block of flats a new neighbour moved in. I met her, she was so friendly. I went into my flat and told my husband that the new neighbour was uber friendly. The next day I came in from work and my husband said, now don't think the worse. I asked what he meant. New neighbour had dropped off an Avon catalogue- there was a motive in her niceness. I did think the worse. I flicked through it and there was nothing I wanted plus I didn't want to get in a transactional relationship with a neighbour. So I put a polite notice saying no thank you and left it on a table in the hall. Well that was me ostracised. She never spoke to me again!

You don’t think it’s an MLM?

JanoirLondon · 08/10/2023 18:52

@YouOKHun
I've never said it's not an mlm but u can choose to work on your own and not recruit or u can indeed train people up as your team.
I work on my own. I also started Avon before there was an opportunity to build a team
But then u know all about Avon and how it works dontcha!!
We have to agree to disagree as we are going round in circles!!
