To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

Chuck it. It's junk mail. If it comes through my door unsolicited, it's going straight in the recycling bin.

Iwasafool · 01/10/2023 22:20

They usually leave them in a plastic bag round here so I always just leave them out for them to pick up.

It will be some woman trying to make a bit of money, walking round delivering the books and then going back hoping to get an order isn't easy and I don't think anyone does it for fun. I think they pay for the books so I think it is mean to throw it away.

cushioncovers · 01/10/2023 22:21

Do people still do that?

Houseplanter · 01/10/2023 22:22

@Iwasafool that's exactly why I'm reluctant to just bin it.

If they pay for the books @Iwasafool maybe it would be sensible not t9 shove them through the door of people who don’t want them and don’t want to be bothered with returning them. Just knock doors and ask if people want them.

thenightsky · 01/10/2023 22:24

It'll be in a plastic bag? If so, just put it back out on the doorstep in its bag.

The woman who left it will be charged real money if you bin it, so don't.

mrssanchez · 01/10/2023 22:26

Just leave it on the doorstep. If you bin it, they might think you have taken it in to consider buying something.

Millybob · 01/10/2023 22:27

Straight in the bin here. Why should you leave stuff on the doorstep, broadcasting the fact that you're probably not at home?

Maddy70 · 01/10/2023 22:28

The reps have to pay for books. Please don't throw it.

Puta post it on it saying you dont wish to reciebe ot ans if anither is left uou will throw it away . Leave it on the doorstep

Iwantmyoldnameback · 01/10/2023 22:30

Leave it on the step dont be mean.

WetBandits · 01/10/2023 22:32

Just leave it on the step with a polite note asking the rep to pass you by next time. Costs you nothing to do that but they do have to pay for their catalogues.

PreetyinPurple · 01/10/2023 22:37

Once someone put one of those kleenez catalogues through our door. Unfortunately for them we had just gone on a 2 week holiday.
I got back to numerous notes threatening to charge me the cost of the catalogue.

I stuck it outside with a note saying we had been abroad, had never asked for the catalogue and next time it would go straight in the bin.

I imagine most people will bin them. It should be in a bag to stick outside.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/10/2023 22:41

Is there somewhere by the front door you can leave it in a waterproof plastic bag, with an easily visible note stating that you're not interested, please don't leave any more as any future editions will go straight in the recycling bin?

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 01/10/2023 22:42

Put it in a sandwich bag and leave it outside.

They do have to pay for the books each campaign and any they are short of are less potential sales this campaign.

After she's done your road, she'll be doing another. The less books she has back, the less sales she can get.

My mum did Avon for years so she could fit it around caring for my disabled sister, as do many.

Don't be a fucking dick.

inloveandmarried · 01/10/2023 22:45

@PreetyinPurple oh gosh that takes me back. I once binned a Kleeneze catalogue that had come through the door thinking it was junk mail.

I got a right earful from a lady who called to collect it and threatened to charge me! I had no idea it wasn't another junk catalogue, this was in the 1990's and lots of unwanted brochures through the door in those days.

I told her not to put another through my door.

user1469796848 · 01/10/2023 22:48

Genuine question…how much commission can somebody make from selling Avon? I’m struggling to see how you can make a viable business/living from it.

Lochroy · 01/10/2023 22:56

WTAF. Trying to guilt people into having junk mail sat on their doorstep in a plastic bag until it's collected, because the rep has to pay for it, even if it was unsolicited in the first place??

And most posters seem to be sympathetic to this?

That's batshit. Either the rep should only deliver once she's made contact or she should be prepared to write off the cost as a business cost.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 01/10/2023 23:15

If the reps pay for the catalogues, do they return them and get the money back? In which case why do they pay for them in the first place?

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2023 23:17

Edited

Half of MN refuses to ever answer the door.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 01/10/2023 23:21

Avon reps are trying to make a bit extra cash. As other pp have said often as a side with other responsibilities that restrict working ie carers/disabilities.
I rarely buy from them, but i wouldnt throw out the catalogue (at all), but the 'first time' is just a bit petty /nasty etc.

Our local rep has them in water tight plastic bags and has a slip of paper with the day she will collect and asks you to.leave it outside so she doesn't have to disturb you.
Sometimes I leave it outside straight away. It does not advertise your house is empty. I'm in my house pretty much 24/7
Just be a decent human being and leave a note saying you are not interested and not to leave one in the future or you will put it in the recycling, but at least give them the chance before you chuck them.

I've never heard of Kleeneze but how are they different to other junk mail?

inloveandmarried · 01/10/2023 23:27

@ElizaWinter they are a bit like Avon but for cleaning stuff rather than beauty.

I guess there is a sympathetic response because Avon is one of those things that have been around for years, long before most "junk" mail was a thing. Maybe it is a style of selling that has been a bit left behind.

I remember my Mum used to get things from Avon for Christmas presents. Soap on a rope anybody? Ding Dong Avon calling!

Most people leave stuff on the doorstep to avoid being disturbed, not because they are away.

JustAMinutePleass · 01/10/2023 23:32

The books belong to the rep. Expect an invoice if you recycle / destroy it - and Avon reps get support from Avon to pursue CCJs. Not worth it. Just leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag
