To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

Thanks for clarifying peeps! Makes a lot of sense as to why people are saying to leave it on the doorstep and not throw it out

Once someone put one of those kleenez catalogues through our door. Unfortunately for them we had just gone on a 2 week holiday.
I got back to numerous notes threatening to charge me the cost of the catalogue.

I stuck it outside with a note saying we had been abroad, had never asked for the catalogue and next time it would go straight in the bin.

I imagine most people will bin them. It should be in a bag to stick outside.

Kleenexes reps were the gestapo of the MLM world back in the day. We had an evil looking fella in a long leather coat who would knock on to collect the catalogue, clipboard in hand and pen poised. He turned not giving him an order into an indictable offence.

fuckssaaaaake · 02/10/2023 05:49

It's still junk and junk from a pyramid scheme, get rid and give them a job catalogue to replace it

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 02/10/2023 05:55

Add a note to the plastic bag "please don't leave Avon catalogues again. Any future catalogues will be out in the recycling bin." Take a photo of it, leave it in your doorstep and let it be collected.

2 birds, one stone. Either you never get a catalogue again, OR next time they drop it off you you can bin it and if they get crabby with you, show them the photo and tell them to stop bothering you.

Houseplanter · 01/10/2023 22:22

@Iwasafool that's exactly why I'm reluctant to just bin it.

Just pop it in a freezer bad s it doesn't get wet and leave it in the step with a note asking them not to leave a catalogue in future .

MayThe4th · 02/10/2023 06:08

Once they put it through the door it’s yours to do with as you please.

We don’t get Avon but I remember years back some cleanease woman came knocking on my door demanding her catalogue back that I hadn’t even seen and eXH had likely binned. She started shouting about how she’d paid for it and the fact I’d binned it made me responsible. I told her if she doesn’t want to lose money don’t put her junk mail through my door. Having your catalogues binned s an occupational hazzard when you put them through people’s letterboxes with all the other junk mail.

As for the poster claiming that they can invoice you and take out a CCJ to get the money back, pmsl. They don’t have a leg to stand on once they give you the catalogue, there is no legal disclaimer which claims you’re responsible for purchasing it if you keep it or destroy it. And taking out a CCJ would be worth more than the catalogue is actually worth. So stop scaremongering.

Where should we draw the line? The takeaway menus? The watchtower?

Soapyspuds · 02/10/2023 06:14

The books belong to the rep. Expect an invoice if you recycle / destroy it - and Avon reps get support from Avon to pursue CCJs. Not worth it. Just leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag

haha you are not of this earth if you think a court would issue a CCJ on somebody for throwing away unsolicited post. There are so many flaws in that suggestion I do not know where to start.

If Avon salespeople have to pay to return them then they need to knock on doors and ask if the resident wants it in the first place. I will not have a crappy magazine on my front door making it look untidy so they go into the recycling.

That’s not true! I used to be an Avon rep.
You’re talking absolute nonsense.

As if anyone is going to pay that invoice. Just deny all knowledge, anyone could have taken it.

They shouldn’t be leaving junk unsolicited. I hate the ‘poor little woman just trying to make money’ guilt slant, just like the pyramid scheme crap.

dayofcheese · 02/10/2023 06:24

Isn't it an MLM?

I'd pop it outside - they can't moan they haven't got it back then.

LadyPenelope68 · 02/10/2023 06:31

I bin them. I didn’t ask for it posting through my door, it’s junk Mail, it gets binned, not my problem.

Edited

Gave us a laugh though.

Are you the person who told an OP the other day that she needed legal advice before hanging a boudoir photo of herself in her bedroom and claimed to be a solicitor?

Anyway, OP, from Avon themselves:

Do you recycle your Avon brochure? Once you’ve finished with it, be sure to share it with someone who might like to use it or, pop it into your paper recycling.

historyrepeatz · 02/10/2023 06:41

They were pushy decades ago and I remember one having a go at my mum as she didn't know what had happened to the book that had been left in the porch a week before.

terrywynne · 02/10/2023 06:41

There's quite a bit of nostalgia around for Avon from people who remember their Avon lady/family doing it a while back but it has increasingly moved to an MLM (multi level marketing) model rather than pure doorstep selling ie: the money is made by having a team. As people have pointed out, you can easily get the products online...

So the hard-line response would be, throw the catalogue out because the sooner the rep realises they aren't going to make money and stops the better (most MLM reps break even at best, or actively lose money because they pay for things like catalogues or, in some MLMs, stock)

Crochetpenguin · 02/10/2023 06:45

Our Avon rep puts a note in telling us to recycle the book when we've finished with it. We order by text/email rather than filling out the form. Lot easier than remembering to put it out on the correct day.

grafittiartist · 02/10/2023 06:46

I love my Avon catalogue arriving! I enjoy an evening looking through it, and always order a few bits.
Seems it might be just me!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 02/10/2023 06:55

In a previous house, I had an Avon lady, and would order every so often. Had her mobile number so we could arrange for her to deliver my order when I was actually home, and could pay for it. She would say when she would collect the brochure, too, and it was always in a plastic bag, so I'd put it out for her.

I got brochure through the door a few months ago, not in a bag, no indication of when she was going to collect it. I put it outside in a bag with a note saying not to give me a brochure again, and wedged it by a plant pot outside, but she never collected it. Several of my neighbours just put theirs outside, we live on a hill and it's windy - they were blowing all over the place, then it poured with rain a week later, so there was soggy paper all over the front gardens. I gave up and put mine in the recycling, and have never received one again.

If you're going to ask people to leave stuff outside, you have to accept that most people won't bother, and give an indication of when you're coming to collect for those that do.

IncompleteSenten · 02/10/2023 06:56

Court? Are you having a laugh? The Unsolicited Goods and Services Act and consumer contracts regulations clearly say you have no responsibility to return unsolicited items.

If they have to pay for it then they should make damned sure someone wants one instead of just shoving it through the door then getting nasty.

SquashPenguin · 02/10/2023 07:02

Straight in the recycling. I don’t want that MLM shit anywhere near my house.

They’re unsolicited goods, so the law is on the side of the person throwing it away. You’d never get a CCJ.

AbbeyGailsParty · 02/10/2023 07:08

Put it in a plastic bag with a note saying you don’t buy Avon please don’t leave book again. Job done.

MyCircumference · 02/10/2023 07:10

i am sure there is a form that you can complete that requests no more books

I do this.
If I'm in and can quickly run down to speak to them I ask them not to leave it again. But if someone was rude or threatening about getting the unsolicited mail back they would not have a sympathetic response.
