To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

I can't be arsed with people putting catalogues through my door. But I wouldn't throw it away. I'd just grumble a bit, then leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag. Why do people get so worked up about stuff like this?

Genuine question…how much commission can somebody make from selling Avon? I’m struggling to see how you can make a viable business/living from it.

I couldn't make a living from it. But at the very worst time of my life it kept my family fed until I could next get my child benefit from the post office. (Yes, long time ago).

Must be even harder now when it's often cheaper to buy Avon online. Sandwich bag with a note saying please don't leave me any more.

The books belong to the rep. Expect an invoice if you recycle / destroy it - and Avon reps get support from Avon to pursue CCJs. Not worth it. Just leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag

This has never happened so much that it unhappened things that had 😂

I agree!

I don’t understand what the big deal is.

If it hasn’t got a plastic bag with it then put it in a freezer/sandwich bag and leave it outside.

Straight in the bin

Just leave it on the step with a polite note asking the rep to pass you by next time. Costs you nothing to do that but they do have to pay for their catalogues.

Yes, this. It takes a few seconds and is the decent thing to do. Whoever stuck it through doesn't deserve punishment for trying to make a tiny bit of money. They've hardly staged a home invasion, just put something through your letterbox.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/10/2023 07:28

@JustAMinutePleass , how on earth can Avon pursue a CCJ regarding an unsolicited item of what looks exactly like junk mail? I can’t believe such a thing would ever succeed.

Maybe the co. does send out ‘frightener’ letters to induce people to cough up (otherwise we’ll be taking you to court) If so, that’d be despicable but wouldn’t altogether surprise me.

fyn · 02/10/2023 07:29

You stopped having to return the catalogue during covid. Our rep just told us to bin them once done!

Augustus40 · 02/10/2023 07:31

Under the unsolicited goods and services act Avon have no right to pursue a CCJ as there was no contract.

RecycleMePlease · 02/10/2023 07:32

Nonsense - unsolicited catalogues through the door aren't chargeable.

If it belongs to the rep, by putting it through the letter box they are in effect throwing it away, or littering inside some stranger's house

Saracen · 02/10/2023 07:36

I'm torn on the subject. I mean, it is unsolicited junk and not my job to look after it and return it to them. On the other hand, the people who do these kinds of sales are often quite hard up and desperate and I don't want to make their lives worse than they already are.

I usually leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag.

They get support for pursuing CCJ's but cant be given free marketing material from the company they are selling for? When will these MLM reps learn its them that is the customer.

Mrsjayy · 02/10/2023 07:39

Houseplanter · 01/10/2023 22:22

@Iwasafool that's exactly why I'm reluctant to just bin it.

Shove it in a sandwich bag and put it on the step they will be a collection day somewhere on it. Its a bit mean to just bin it.

PreetyinPurple · 02/10/2023 07:41

Girl I went to school with has done Avon for decades. She just seems to do it entirely through a Facebook group, I see her asking if people want to borrow a catalogue occasionally but mostly it’s online. She does very very well, but it’s all regulars making regular orders. I imagine someone sticking catalogues through doors is wasting their time.

User174085934 · 02/10/2023 07:42

In the recycling, I don't want to leave paper on my doorstep, it's junk mail

Superhair · 02/10/2023 07:42

You can recycle it by putting it back out for the Avon rep to re-use elsewhere. Let them know not to leave anymore.

Stroopwaffels · 02/10/2023 07:43

People are sympathetic to Avon / Avon ladies as they remember them from the 70s and the "ding dong, Avon calling" campaign. That was then, this is now, and they are just as scamtastic as any other MLM. There is not money to be made on Avon selling, people are not making money as they did in the 70s or 80s before the supermarkets stocked every brand of bubble bath you can imagine and before internet selling.

Seriously, a paper catalogue in 2023. 🙄You want Avon products, get them direct from the website. As for the paper catalogue, put it on the doorstep. Not your problem if it gets wet/damaged. You're probably doing the rep/sucker a favour by getting them out of the pyramid scheme sooner rather than later.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/10/2023 07:43

Iwasafool · 01/10/2023 22:20

They usually leave them in a plastic bag round here so I always just leave them out for them to pick up.

It will be some woman trying to make a bit of money, walking round delivering the books and then going back hoping to get an order isn't easy and I don't think anyone does it for fun. I think they pay for the books so I think it is mean to throw it away.

This. I leave it outside in its plastic bag if I don't want it.

So Avon won’t pay for the books but will pay the county court fee. What absolute tosh. Where’s the contract that’s been breached? What civil law has been broken?

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/10/2023 07:44

You can order online but then you pay the postage. My local Avon lady has been doing it for at least 10 years. She wouldn't do it if it wasn't worth her while.

rwalker · 02/10/2023 07:45

I leave it on the doorstep with a note in saying please don’t post anymore

I don’t begrudge anyone trying to make a bit of cash why be a twat and just bin it

TheBirdintheCave · 02/10/2023 07:45

Oh my gosh I had this exact rant last night. There should be an opt out thing if they're so precious about their catalogues. Once it comes into my house unbidden surely it's up to me to decide what I do with it?

The first one I got we'd just arrived back from holiday so I chucked it in the recycling with the other junk mail. When the lady came to collect it she was quite affronted that I'd chucked it out.

Are you an Avon rep not getting your books back.

Straight in the bin here. Why should you leave stuff on the doorstep, broadcasting the fact that you're probably not at home?

I work from home. I’d still leave it in a bag on the doorstep. It means someone won’t interrupt my work and I won’t sabotage theirs.
