To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

The books belong to the rep. Expect an invoice if you recycle / destroy it - and Avon reps get support from Avon to pursue CCJs. Not worth it. Just leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag

One of the most ridiculous comments ive read yet 🙄

Bunnykins34 · 02/10/2023 08:14

I dont myself....We can knock doors and ask if interested (best way too) or can post brochures with a note saying to leave outside/order online etc...Its up the the individual rep what thry want to do and take the consequences i.e lose brochure as its been binned

@PreetyinPurple oh gosh that takes me back. I once binned a Kleeneze catalogue that had come through the door thinking it was junk mail.

I got a right earful from a lady who called to collect it and threatened to charge me! I had no idea it wasn't another junk catalogue, this was in the 1990's and lots of unwanted brochures through the door in those days.

I told her not to put another through my door.

I had the same and I gave the same response. If you haven’t asked for it, it’s unsolicited and you have the right to do with it what you want. Why don’t they put a note through asking people to request a catalogue if they want one?

dawngreen · 02/10/2023 08:16

My sister tried it for a while, and yes they do have to pay for the books. She gave up because ppl were just not giving the books back. And not many ppl bought things either.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 01/10/2023 23:15

If the reps pay for the catalogues, do they return them and get the money back? In which case why do they pay for them in the first place?

No they didn't get the money back. They try to get as much use out of them as possible, rather than buy loads. I used to do a few streets (but I did knock first, to see if it was wanted) I would collect after 2 days and do the next few streets and so on, until I had to put the order through. You used earn 20% commission after the first £100. But that was 20 years ago!

User174085934 · 02/10/2023 08:19

If I wanted the odd thing from Avon I would just buy it on Amazon or eBay, I wouldn't faff around with a catalogue

toastofthetown · 02/10/2023 08:22

If you post something through someone else’s door unsolicited, you run the risk of not getting it back. The house could be unoccupied, or the residents may be unable to speak English so bin it, or maybe it’s an Airbnb, or maybe they have a family crisis and leaving an unwanted catalogue outside gets forgotten. If I got one, I’d try to remember to leave it outside on the day with a note, but there’s many reasons that a household may not return the catalogue other than being a dick. If it’s so important to have it back, then check that the household is willing and able to return it before shoving it through a door.

Posting for the first time in months and months (got so tired of all the rudeness and unpleasantness) as I feel quite strongly about this!

I have very happy memories of 'Auntie Nell' (our neighbour) being an Avon lady as she gave me free samples from the 'Pretty Peach' (remember those bottles?) range and she always smelled lovely.

Fast forward to adulthood and my last parish where a young mother with MS was an Avon lady. Tbh I started buying just to help her out (it's hard not to when you're the vicar!) but, to my surprise, I found that the products were really, really good. I know that she makes a decent living from Avon.

At a time when we lament seeing people stuck to their screens 24-7, and when people need help for their gaming addictions, isn't there something rather lovely about the Avon catalogue?

If you are a vicar, I would recommend doing some more reading into the MLM model because the companies profit by preying on the vulnerable. A handful make money at the expense of the rest, and many many people are pressured to "fake it until they make it". There is nothing lovely about a catalogue in a world of 24/7 screens when the business model puts people into debt and ruins relationships.

Someone said that it is only recently that people get offended by a catalogue, more like it is only recently that people are seeing through the nostalgic goodwill. As a pp has posted, Avon has pivoted to MLM recently so public opinion is still catching up, and they are helped by having good products, but MLMs companies are not some charming local business. They are big businesses that make a profit by getting (generally) women in need of some extra cash to work as unpaid sales reps who carry all the costs and risks with no minimum wage/sick pay/holiday leave etc etc.

goingtotown · 02/10/2023 08:25

I can't remember where I heard it, Avon will be in selected Superdrug stores in October.

You have fond memories of what it was. Now it's just another MLM preying on the vulnerable

Bunnykins34 · 02/10/2023 08:29

Yep thats correct, cant remember exactly but am sure its due to be trialed for 6 months in 100 stores this month

Dibbydoos · 02/10/2023 08:29

Leave it on your doorstep. FGS they cost the agent £, have a heart!

Iwasafool · 02/10/2023 08:29

OllyBJolly · 02/10/2023 07:19

I couldn't make a living from it. But at the very worst time of my life it kept my family fed until I could next get my child benefit from the post office. (Yes, long time ago).

Must be even harder now when it's often cheaper to buy Avon online. Sandwich bag with a note saying please don't leave me any more.

This is why I think it is mean to just throw them away. No one is tramping round delivering Avon catalogues for a laugh so I assume people really need the money and why would I want to kick anyone while they are down.

It really isn't a big deal to just leave the catalogue out for them to pick up, if you need to put it in a plastic bag recycle one if you can't afford a sandwich bag.

If it put through my door unsolicited, I consider it to be given to me. I would put it out once with a note, but I do not feel I have to. I cannot see a ccj resulting from this!

No one has time to pursue CCJS from the last ten ppl that chucked the books in the bin lol.

Bollocks

If they want to keep it, dont put it through someone elses door!

I'm quite vocal where I live about the evils of MLMs. I do not give consent to direct marketing from Emma around the corner to drop her Avon/Other catalogues through my letter box. You try dropping it off, and try suing me!

https://www.dataguidance.com/news/uk-ico-fines-royal-mail-group-%C2%A320000-unsolicited

Findings of the ICO
Following its investigation, the ICO determined that Royal Mail did not have the necessary valid consent for the 213,191 direct marketing messages received by subscribers.

Just read this on a thread when I was searching for Avon suing for non return of the catalogue
I had a buddy who used to refuse to return Catalogues for one of the catalogue agents in the area. The person putting them in his door was like "I need it back they're worth £X i can't remember. My buddy's response was really. I'll sell you them for half price. I got like 6 of them!" They door to door person would then say "But we need to return them. They're not our property!" My buddy would say "You maybe shouldn't be posting them in strangers doors then eh!"

UK: ICO fines Royal Mail Group £20,000 for unsolicited marketing

The Information Commissioner's Office ('ICO') published, on 8 March 2022, its monetary penalty notice, issued on 7 March 2022, in which it imposed a fine of £20,000 on Royal Mail Group Limited, for violation of Regulation 22 of the Privacy and Electron...

How small are Avon catalogues that they’ll fit in a sandwich bag? I don’t have sandwich bags, anyway, I’ve got wanky useless beeswax wrap. I’ve also got a good business model which is “don’t put things that cost me money through other people’s letterboxes and expect to get them back”.

Sadly your sister's experience is very common, hopefully she didn't lose too much time/money before giving up and that she doesn't think it is her fault it didn't work.

MyCircumference · 02/10/2023 07:10

i am sure there is a form that you can complete that requests no more books

Why would I start looking for forms, filling forms or whatever to stop something I did not ask for?! Surely it is far mire considerate to only put them through doors of people who have filled the form?

I despise MLM schemes.
I had a boy-friend that sold it many decades ago and he kept trying to recruit me. I was quite young and at that time really did not know what MLM was plus the warnings weren't out yet and would not be for some time.

He took me to a meeting of this company (USA famous one with lots of products from cleaning to body care). They really talked it up and then the "head" drew a triangle on the board and started explaining the ten who get ten, who get ten, who then get ten, etc. Then asked if there were questions. I raised my hand and said, "But at some point soon, no one will be buying it because everyone will be selling it. You run out of people", which seriously, is when the lightbulb clicked on. Next thing I know, I am being escorted out, chastised and left outside. Luckily my boy-friend came out a minute later, took me home and broke up with me for knocking this "wonderful company". Somewhere, I still have a comb from that company.

I didn't learn the word "pyramid scheme" until a few years after that but I knew it made no sense and the only winners were in the top 1-3 levels.

This was the early 70's and every year I watched as more and more MLM's popped up and more and more people got screwed. Friends signed up, sure they would be a CEO soon or driving a pink Cadillac and not a one ever did.

I had hoped that when all the warnings and truths came out about MLMs, they'd fade away but it seems they are still showing up everywhere. Clothing, oils, jewelry......no end in sight.

Sorry, just really needed to share this.

Hilarious and completely wrong.
Why do some posters make up this shit?
Do they think they’re being clever? 😂😂😂

Beargrumps22 · 02/10/2023 08:51

if i want to buy Avon which I dont then I will buy on line. I get fed up of charity collection bags, unwanted things like Avon, leaflets for retirement homes/meal deliveries/blinds/politicians

CrazyHamsterLady · 02/10/2023 08:52

I’ve never once had someone come and ask for it back. I used to keep them for weeks, sometimes months. Now I just Chuck them as soon as they arrive.

BatteryPoweredMammy · 02/10/2023 08:57

Bin it. You’ll be doing someone a favour because the sooner they realise that MLM businesses are a fat con, the better.
