Was this woman rude?

Just been for lunch in my local (dog friendly) cafe. Took my small, well behaved dog with me. When we went in, the two women on the table next to us looked at my dog and rolled their eyes, then started talking loudly for several minutes about how dogs should not be in cafés. I was sat right next to them, feeling like I should pretend I couldn't hear them. It was awkward. They spent the whole time looking at my dog and me, and shooting us filthy looks.

I will add that my dog sat quietly under the table and didn't go near them. Didn't bother anyone. I felt uncomfortable because they were being so vocal.

Should I have said something to them?

Sounds like your dog was better behaved than them!

Dog friendly? Dog tolerant or aimed at Dog owners?
As a person without a Dog how would you know its Dog friendly??
I tend to agree, while it's useful to have places you can take a dog, of everywhere is dog friendly how are you meant to avoid?

interesting post.

I think if a cafe is open to allow dogs to be taken inside, a sign should be clearly displayed to those who don’t wish to dine next to dogs, the option to go elsewhere.
It sounds like the cafe in the OP has not ´safe this clear because OP didn’t even realise the dog could be taken inside.

Sunshinenrain · 30/09/2023 15:54

They sound like twats and I bet they wouldn’t have acted that way if they were alone or if you were with someone else.

I kind of wished you’d have said that dogs are allowed and that if she doesn’t like it she shouldn’t go to a dog friendly cafe.
But I don’t blame you for not doing so.

Hopefully they’ll be in there again and you can be ready with a comeback if needs be.

Some people are just dicks.
I’m sorry you had to deal with this when you weren’t doing anything wrong.

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/09/2023 15:55

Think all place's that a dog friendly, should be made to put a sign up. It not been made law that they should have one.

KakiFruit · 30/09/2023 15:57

You really have to ask if that was rude?

Or you just want to start yet another tedious dog thread?

Yes agreed.
Even on this thread there are people seeing "dog friendly" and thinking the place is full of dogs/aimed at dog owners.

TigerQueenie · 30/09/2023 16:00

As a dog owner who quite likes to eat and drink when I have my dogs with me, I'd very much welcome a scheme whereby dog friendly establishments had to have a sticker in the window or something.

Most establishments in most places are not dog friendly, so it's not difficult for most to choose somewhere you won't encounter dogs.

Anewuser · 30/09/2023 16:02

People seem to have forgotten how to behave.

You did nothing wrong. It was dog friendly, your dog was well behaved.

Manners cost nothing but people seem to think it’s their right to loud project their feelings onto everyone.

I was at the supermarket checkout when the cashier said “how can you put up with that noise?” My adult son is severely disabled so makes noises. How incredibly rude. But the reality is no one cares what they say anymore or who they upset.

Sorry, the rude woman tried to ruin your day.

I agree with this 100%

I was in a cafe last month, it was empty when we went in . Then as time went on people started to come in with dogs. There were about 6-7 groups, each with dogs. Two of the dogs started a fight in the crowded cafe, which set the others off barking. It started by one dog quietly sitting under a table leaping out to go for another dog. People and dogs could have got hurt in such a confined space.

One of the groups was a crowd of about 4-5 pensioners. 1 couple had two dogs in their laps that were openly eating from the plates, which was just foul. How is that in line with restaurant standard H&S?

I live on a tourist area and I'm so sick of entitled dog owners putting others at risk.

I love dogs and have had dogs myself. I trained them and managed them properly. I would never take them into a confined space like a cafe where conflict can arise. It's not fair on the dog or the customers.

If a sign is up, at least I can make a choice.

Oh god it’s another ‘my dog is more important than you’ post ….

My dog is more important to me than some random stranger. How weird to think people should love strangers more than their pets. You're weird.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 30/09/2023 16:09

Did she actually comment about you specifically? If so, then yes she was rude. If she was just talking about dogs being in cafes in general then, even if this was prompted by you bringing in your dog, she’s entitled to her opinion. Is the cafe obviously dog friendly or do you only know because the owner told you? If it’s not obvious then she wasn’t to know it was dog friendly when she first went in and it’s reasonable to not like dogs in cafes. Almost all dogs smell, shed, drool etc at least a bit, many people are allergic, not all dogs are well behaved. I can understand people who fee dogs don’t belong indoors (aside from service dogs) and especially in places serving food, it wouldn’t be acceptable to bring in any other animal so I don’t really get why dogs are allowed inside cafes to be honest p!

KandieKaine · 30/09/2023 16:09

It was a dog friendly cafe so those women were out of order . If they didn't like it they should have left or not have entered the first place .

Irridescantshimmmer · 30/09/2023 16:12

The two dogs were those two women with the bad attitude.

Some people are an abysmal specimen of the human race.OP, and those two should have been told to wind their necks in.by the cafe owners or management because they are not good for buisness.

JaneJeffer · 30/09/2023 16:23

You should have had a conversation with your dog about the gobby women at the other table

Anewest · 30/09/2023 16:26

You're only unreasonable for not then making a big fuss of your dog and loudly telling them not to mind the annoyingly loud whiny miseries at the next table!

xyz111 · 30/09/2023 16:30

I love dogs but agree with them. What happens if one of them was allergic, or frightened? Dogs shouldn't be inside where food is. No one wants a floating hair in their food

Can we stop with the Karen thing now? It puts all women down.
Yes, they were rude.

midgemadgemodge · 30/09/2023 16:37

They can go into a cafe that allows dogs even if they don't like that aspect

The term 'Karen' is misogynistic and designed to silence womens voices.

It wouldn't be acceptable to use racist or homophobic slurs against other groups of people. Its not okay to use this term against women.

olympicsrock · 30/09/2023 16:39

Were there signs to let everyone know that the owner welcomes dogs?

If not then non dog lovers can be excused for being upset that dogs are there.

Kisskiss · 30/09/2023 16:40

midgemadgemodge · 30/09/2023 15:28

No because she wasn't talking to you just about you and she is allowed to think that way

Yeah she is allowed to think what she wants, but talking rudely , loudly is not ok.

I'm on their side.
If someone walked into a cafe with a dog, I'd be walking straight out.

And before anyone says "GoOD I wOuLdn'T WanT YoU arOuNd My DOg anYWaY!" Bore off 🥱

SleeplessinSeattle69 · 30/09/2023 16:44

I'd have been quite happy if they'd walked out. That's completely their choice. My post was about being unhappy that they made me feel uncomfortable.
