To want to take my 12kg dog in the plane cabin

BettyBoomer · 30/09/2023 12:13

I’m going to Europe this summer and I’d like to take my dog but I dont want to put the dog in the hold. There are a number of airlines that allow dogs in the cabin if they are under 10kg (KLM, AirFrance, ITA air).

does anyone know of an airline from UK to Europe that would take a 12kg dog?

thanks!

This thread shows just how little mumsnetters travel.

Don’t be silly.

I fly internationally for work most months - and several times a year long haul to the southern hemisphere and have done so for about 30 years - never seen a dog or cat in the cabin.

The most frequent flights with dogs in the cabin are domestic US and within Europe. Which are not flights you’re taking. It’s very common; just the UK as always which is backwards.

So glad you posted this OP. Good to know they allow this so I know not to fly with KLM. Will also make me check other airlines too.

Thanks for the heads up 👍

Pleasure. Most airlines have the same rules. Expect British airlines, so stick to them.

Of course they’re flights I’m taking! Oh well this whole thread just shows that money can’t buy class - thanks for the demonstration of that old adage, OP.

🙄

Just like I’ve seen goats and chickens on Indian trains and a parrot on a bus in Istanbul.

Bonjovispjs · 30/09/2023 21:35

Just googled and looks like dogs aren't allowed on the Eurostar unless assistance dogs.

OP is so well travelled, I'm sure she knows that already 😄

So thanks for all the posts. I’ve found an airline that allows up to 12kg including the soft crate. So I’ll weigh the dog tomorrow and see if it’s comfortable inside. But looking like we will go ahead and fly with the dog in the cabin (maybe I’ll post my flight details so those horrified can avoid my flight 😜 ).

it does appear that you cannot fly a dog in the cabin back into the UK due to UK laws and regulations. So we will probably fly/ train to Paris and then Eurostar back.

been most helpful and amusing chatting it through! Thanks 😍

I will also start campaigning to change the UK laws to allow doggies in the cabin to fly into the UK! 😂

Be sure to post a link to the campaign, so the rest of us with an ounce of common sense can sign against it.

No one in the right mind wants dogs wandering the aisles of a plane.

IKnowAPlace · 30/09/2023 21:45

I've not done it but I know others who used trains to take their small dogs around western Europe without a car.

My dog is 6kg and I'd feel bad shoving her under the seat of a plane. The noises etc. would probably be scary for her and with trains, you can plan in loo breaks or use sleeper trains where your dog would normally not need out anyway.

I think you'd need to use a train to come back into the UK anyway.

I told you this on page 1! It took that long to accept you were wrong?

Not much different to train!

Small dogs travel in plane cabins all the time and are not traumatised. Only in the UK, supposedly sooooo dog friendly, is this deemed somehow cruel!

HisNibs · 30/09/2023 22:03

A 10-11kg dog in a 55x45x23cm container. OK... And you can only do it leaving the UK. Eurostar only accept service dogs (not registered to carry pets) so it'll be the ferry or shuttle back to the UK. I'd just take the dog in the car in the first place.

GettingOldWithoutStyle · 30/09/2023 22:08

How lucky the dog is to be so loved it's going to be cage and shoved under a chair.

I don't own a dog, never will. The entitlement of dog owners is quite unbelievable at times.

lazymum99 · 30/09/2023 22:12

I already said on the first page that no dogs on Eurostar. Only on ferry or shuttle. People I know who do it arrange a car to meet them at Paris airport and get driven to shuttle and across.
Can go as a foot passenger on ferry but not on train

lazymum99 · 30/09/2023 22:13

If you travel business class you can often get away with putting the dog bag on the middle seat which is always left empty

maddening · 30/09/2023 22:14

Ferry and train?

biscuitbadger · 30/09/2023 22:15

One of my kids has a phobia of dogs. Fear of dogs is not that uncommon.

The problem with planes is, you're stuck in that seat for hours, and there's not necessarily any option to swap or move away.

Same with allergies - air on planes is being recirculated and plenty of people have allergies. There's no way they can get away if they feel unwell, and mid-air is not a great place to have a serious allergic reaction.

Dogs shouldn't be on planes. Assistance dogs are a necessary exception.

IncomingTraffic · 30/09/2023 22:24

People who let their dogs roam around freely bothering people on trains are arseholes. The fact that might be tolerated on trains doesn’t mean it should be on planes.

There are significant differences between trains and planes that make a difference too.

PickleDig · 30/09/2023 22:42

Yabu. I cant imagine why any dog would want to go on a plane or why any owner would subject them to it. Imagine being cooped up in a small space with turbulence and pressure changes, the dog may be sick or soil itself over the cabin.

Does the UK ban it because it's "cruel", or because of our ultra-strict rabies laws?

"Get away with"? Are you joking?!

There is no way on god's green earth I'd ignore a dog being plonked on the middle 'seat' in business. Who do you imagine you'd be sitting next to that they'd blind-eye a dog on the tray table between the 2 seats?

(For anyone not familiar, when the middle seat is left empty (a nod to 'business' in a standard cabin) it's not usually just an empty seat, it's a middle seat converted to be a table/deck between the windows and aisle seats.)

There's no "getting away with..." anything in business. There's enough crew to know every single item anyone brought into the cabin.

SabbatWheel · 01/10/2023 01:02

I am very allergic to dogs, anaphylactic if I touch one and then touch my own skin.

I was horrified to see a dog on a Delta Airlines flight from Gatwick to JFK in 2011 and had to tell the cabin crew that it mustn’t come anywhere near me - they were very understanding. (I was leading a school tour to New York at the time, very awkward!)

Asiatoyork · 01/10/2023 02:34

You minimising of other people's health issues are just as disgusting and discriminatory as those attitudes you are criticising

This is exactly what I thought.

We weren’t going to drive as we already have a car in Europe. But yeah, we might need to do that.

Well I obviously won’t be telling you that so you can sign against! 😂 don’t be daft!

and dogs don’t wander the aisles - they are in their carrier. You are a silly billy! 😂
