To want to take my 12kg dog in the plane cabin

BettyBoomer · 30/09/2023 12:13

I’m going to Europe this summer and I’d like to take my dog but I dont want to put the dog in the hold. There are a number of airlines that allow dogs in the cabin if they are under 10kg (KLM, AirFrance, ITA air).

does anyone know of an airline from UK to Europe that would take a 12kg dog?

thanks!

Indeed.

Can we have at least one place where non-service-dogs cannot go, please?

But assuming your dog is a pet, it goes in kennels/is looked after by someone, you use a different form of transport, or you holiday in the UK.

Tryingmybestadhd · 30/09/2023 18:15

Op you won’t be able to fly back in the U.K. with a dog in cabin . Just be aware of that . If it’s within continental Europe you will be ok

Hayliebells · 30/09/2023 18:15

It's so easy to take your dog via the tunnel or ferry. We've taken ours both via the tunnel and a dog friendly ferry cabin, and both were really well set up for dogs. Other passengers don't want to travel with your dog, so as you have other options, you need to choose one of those. On the ferry, the dogs are kept pretty much away from other passengers, you can even go to Spain by ferry if you want.

Ivebeentogeorgia · 30/09/2023 18:17

Poor dog.

God it would be my worst nightmare having a dog on the plane, under your feet and barking. Why do airlines allow this? What about people with allergies?

Nobody gives a toss about people with dog allergies.

I was overseas recently and it was so nice because although there were dogs, there weren't as many of them, and they were well controlled. The UK could learn a lot.

The UK needs to have an official database of authorised guide dogs and official assistance dogs, then the situation can be managed more effectively

I agree. The EHRC says that you should not ask for proof that a dog is an assistance dog, but I can't see the issue - if you have a blue badge you have to display it, so if you want to take your dog somewhere where pets are not allowed, you should have to show evidence that it is not a pet. A database would be useful too to stop people just putting eg a hearing dog jacket on their dog.

most are actually under 9kg including the carrier and have to fit under the seat. you can't put a 12kg dog under the plane seat!

vivainsomnia · 30/09/2023 12:59

For one, you won't be doing so from the UK on any airline. The UK is about the only place in the world that doesn't allow it!

For two, I don't think any airline will allow above 10 kilos. I 3ven thought most were 6 kilos or under.

The only way is by Eurotunnel, or ferry from Dover on some of the crossing. Other ferries will allow if you book a room.

don't allow what???

Riapia · 30/09/2023 18:32

Hope you and doggo have a wonderful fun time OP. Woof woof.

Amazing!
Do most of you know that a dog has been on the plane prior to check for explosives and things?

I would rather deal with a dog than screaming kids, drunk idiots and people that throw up and fart.

Not before every flight it doesnt

my father was a armed police office at Gatwick in the drug squad

How on earth would that work? Do u pay for an extra seat? I wouldn’t want to be sat next to a dog on a flight 😳

I fly a lot and, believe me, there are a lot of worse seat neighbours than a dog out there.

Not if you're scared of dogs there isnt

jolaylasofia · 30/09/2023 18:46

This thread shows just how little mumsnetters travel. I see little dogs in carriers on planes all the time. Cats and dogs actually. It doesn't bother anyone and only uk is abit weird about it. Europe, middle east, asia and usa all frequently travel with their pets.

Hoosemover · 30/09/2023 18:48

BettyBoomer · 30/09/2023 17:23

Thanks for that. We have a European passport for doggo so should be fine.

If it an EU passport Issued in the UK then it will be invalid.
If EU passport for another country, the rabies vacine needs to I’ve up-to-date otherwise that will be invalid. The vacine needs to be administered by an EU vet.

so you might need an Animal health certificate from the vet.

I travel constantly, worldwide, and I've never ever seen a dog in the cabin.

Not once.

Agree. I travel by air all the time, shorthaul and longhaul. Many times every year for many years.

I’ve never seen this on any flight. It’s bollocks.

Throwingpots · 30/09/2023 19:02

Really don’t get why people keep quoting all the other unpleasant passengers that travel on planes, this argument doesn’t suddenly make everything ok. Adding another irritant to the mix just increases the chances of an awful journey. Sounds like OP will be able to take her ‘doggo’ but thankfully not bring him back if previous posters are correct. Small mercies I guess.

WiddlinDiddlin · 30/09/2023 19:14

The biggest weight limit I can find for flying in the cabin (in a carrier under the seat and there will be restrictions on height there too) is 10kg, and that includes the carrier weight as well as the pets weight. All the others are 8kg inc carrier.

You cannot cram a pet into a carrier either, they still need to be able to stand up normally, turn around, lie down etc, within the confines of the soft carrier - you can be turned away if they think your pet is squashed into too small a carrier.

And this is for flying OUT of the UK.

They won't let you fly INTO the UK this way, the dog would need to be in the hold, in a proper rigid flight kennel.

lazymum99 · 30/09/2023 20:11

If the OP owns property or is resident in another EU country and the dog has been there before you can get a dog passport from that country. You then just have to make sure rabies vaccines are up to date and get the dog wormed between 1 and 4 days before coming back into the UK.
since Brexit the UK dog passport/health certificate thingy has to be done for each trip and the veg can charge what they like which is about £200.
We have never had any trouble with the paperwork going in and out of France. I can only assume the person up thread saying that the French were difficult had not got the right paperwork or not got an authorised vet to stamp it

I've never seen a dog on a plane, although I did see a dog in the departure lounge in Heathrow earlier this year, but assume that was an assistance dog.

As for being "weird" about it, it's not weird to not want dogs in a confined space. I would not be happy if I got on a plane and there was a dog next to me. At least on a train I can get up and find another seat or just stand up somewhere.

Yep it’s an EU passport issued in Europe and rabies is updated yearly. Thanks for mentioning, but I don’t need the Animal health certificate. The dog has an EU passport.

Totally agree with you. The other thing is that the mumsnetters probably don’t even notice if they in row 22 but in row 3 there’s a sleeping dog in a car tw under the seat in front. It’s not like there is a Labrador sitting on a chair with a seatbelt on!

Don’t be silly.

I fly internationally for work most months - and several times a year long haul to the southern hemisphere and have done so for about 30 years - never seen a dog or cat in the cabin.

BettyBoomer · 30/09/2023 21:26

So thanks for all the posts. I’ve found an airline that allows up to 12kg including the soft crate. So I’ll weigh the dog tomorrow and see if it’s comfortable inside. But looking like we will go ahead and fly with the dog in the cabin (maybe I’ll post my flight details so those horrified can avoid my flight 😜 ).

it does appear that you cannot fly a dog in the cabin back into the UK due to UK laws and regulations. So we will probably fly/ train to Paris and then Eurostar back.

been most helpful and amusing chatting it through! Thanks 😍

I will also start campaigning to change the UK laws to allow doggies in the cabin to fly into the UK! 😂
