To want to take my 12kg dog in the plane cabin

I’m going to Europe this summer and I’d like to take my dog but I dont want to put the dog in the hold. There are a number of airlines that allow dogs in the cabin if they are under 10kg (KLM, AirFrance, ITA air).

does anyone know of an airline from UK to Europe that would take a 12kg dog?

thanks!

You can take dogs on a ferry no problem.

ThreeB · 30/09/2023 12:45

You can't do it on flights departing/arriving in the UK

poolviewthanks · 30/09/2023 12:47

Since brexit it's very hard and expensive to fly with dogs to or from the uk

The idea of being on a plane with other people's dogs or pets in the cabin - urgh! No thanks, apart from guide dogs.

smallshinybutton · 30/09/2023 12:50

Is your dog an assistance dog?

DivingForLove · 30/09/2023 12:52

How on earth would that work? Do u pay for an extra seat? I wouldn’t want to be sat next to a dog on a flight 😳

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 30/09/2023 12:55

I’m not sure it is fair to bring a dog unless you need to ie an assistance dog. . You can’t take him out of his carrier and ensure he drinks to help his ears as you can with babies etc.

GreenWheat · 30/09/2023 12:57

God, I hope not.

Also on trains

There is a crucial word missing from the thread title.

vivainsomnia · 30/09/2023 12:59

For one, you won't be doing so from the UK on any airline. The UK is about the only place in the world that doesn't allow it!

For two, I don't think any airline will allow above 10 kilos. I 3ven thought most were 6 kilos or under.

The only way is by Eurotunnel, or ferry from Dover on some of the crossing. Other ferries will allow if you book a room.

Yes

Would have been handy

smallshinybutton · 30/09/2023 13:00

Does your dog need to go on a diet?

Can you get a smaller dog?

PerspiringElizabeth · 30/09/2023 13:01

What if it needs a poo 🤢 no thanks!

cuddlebear · 30/09/2023 13:03

I think you can take him if he’s an assistance dog.

DD recently returned from Austria on a plane with a passenger who was accompanied by a Labrador which I assume weighed more than 10kg but it was an anxiety dog.

Agree with PP it will probably be easier to use a different mode of transportation.

yeveamgirl · 30/09/2023 13:03

Flying with pup is hard. P&O ferries now have a separate (and very nice!) pet lounge and outdoor pet area. It has a separate entrance to the rest of the ship, too. I had a look in there yesterday and compared to the rest of the ship, it was so quiet! No screaming gangs of teenagers on school trips.

Channel tunnel is faster though, but also very accommodating.

I think give up on the idea of flying.

AnonyLonnymouse · 30/09/2023 13:04

Oh dear god, this is a thing?!

I can think of any number of issues.

usernother · 30/09/2023 13:08

God no! We don't need yet another place that is 'Dog Friendly'

BlinkerGoBlink · 30/09/2023 13:14

OP - I’ve looked I to this extensively. No, cannot be done.

Try K9 Jets or similar. They use private jets to “ride share” pet owners, so basically it’s a plane full of dog lovers and dogs! 🤣

Or, ferry.

Ascendant15 · 30/09/2023 13:16

Even with an assistance dog some UK carriers are bloody difficult. Unfortunately is there is no "formal registration" in the UK - technically not even for seeing dogs. I have dual nationality, and in my second place of residence there is a formal register (and standardised testing), and I still frequently have "discussions" with airlines about the law, even though I can provide proper paperwork. It really is time the UK caught up with the century - assistance dogs are not just for people with "guide dogs".

As an aside, without the kind of full bond that an assistance dog had with its owner, I honestly think its cruel to fly a dog unless it is trained to that (like working dogs often are). If you've heard babies and young children screaming because of the pressure changes, especially at take off and landing, you might think twice about how that feels to a dog?

HellNoBedBug · 30/09/2023 13:17

Thank fuck this isn’t a thing

Taylorswiftserastour · 30/09/2023 13:22

What's your dog going to do in Europe? Woof at the Sistine chapel?

SophieStew · 30/09/2023 13:23

According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority website, you can take an assistance dog on any flight free of charge if it will fit on the floor in front of your seat. If it’s bigger, you have to pay for it.

It is illegal for an airline to refuse an assistance dog according to their website but assume they are referring to flights in and out of UK.

I have seen someone with a “hearing dog” on a plane but it was small to medium sized.

Charter a private Jet?
