To want to take my 12kg dog in the plane cabin

I’m going to Europe this summer and I’d like to take my dog but I dont want to put the dog in the hold. There are a number of airlines that allow dogs in the cabin if they are under 10kg (KLM, AirFrance, ITA air).

does anyone know of an airline from UK to Europe that would take a 12kg dog?

thanks!

As an aside, please don't consider putting your dog in the hold as an alternative - it's aboslutely terrifying for them. I think it should be banned.

Jellybean23 · 30/09/2023 13:54

OMG, a long list of things that could go wrong. Doesn't bear thinking about.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 30/09/2023 13:54

Oh FFS. Kennel the dog. Or if you’re moving, have it shipped.

Nobody should have to put up with pets on a flight.

IncomingTraffic · 30/09/2023 13:54

The risk assessment for allowing loose animals on a plane would be ridiculous.

Assistance dogs are so rigorously trained. Most people’s dogs are not.

I also suspect that the sort of people who allow their off the lead dog to bound up to your toddler and terrify him/jump all over strangers in the park would be over represented in the pool of arseholes who’d decide to take their dog on a Ryanair flight. Carnage.

What's your dog going to do in Europe? Woof at the Sistine chapel?

Epic!

PinkFootstool · 30/09/2023 13:55

You'll do better to look at driving, ferries and trains. Dogs can't go in cabins of most airplanes of the UK unless they are a (proper!) assistance dog ie Guide Dog, Dog for the Disabled, Hearing Dog etc. Animals for emotional support etc are not recognised for this in the UK as there's no official system to recognise their training.

I’m not sure about that Pink Footstool.

As posted upthread, DD travelled to UK from Austria a couple of weeks ago with a Labrador that was described by the owner as “her anxiety dog”.

FOJN · 30/09/2023 13:58

I have a dog and would love to travel by plane with him but I think it's ridiculous that any dog, apart from assistance dogs, are allowed in the cabin on any plane. Can you imagine the chaos in the event of an emergency landing?

There is a crucial word missing from the thread title.

I guess I'm being dense, but I can't work out what's missing?

A friend had to travel a Whippet puppy to Australia from UK
they travelled with a horse who was accompanied by a groom in the hold- The groom wasn’t allowed to remove puppy from crate , but could comfort the dog by her close presence.
It was thousands even then for a small dog.

‘Dog’, was missing, now been added it seems.

It's obviously been edited now but the word 'dog' wasn't there before.

According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority website, you can take an assistance dog on any flight free of charge if it will fit on the floor in front of your seat. If it’s bigger, you have to pay for it.

It is illegal for an airline to refuse an assistance dog according to their website but assume they are referring to flights in and out of UK.

I have seen someone with a “hearing dog” on a plane but it was small to medium sized.

With respect to you, that is bullshit and Google. First of all, have you seen the average space on the floor in front of ANYONE? You'd be bloody lucky to fit a small handbag. Secondly, the size of dog is not related to function - the majority of dogs capable of training to assistance level tend to medium/ larger sizes because they tend to be working strains. I'm not saying there aren't smaller breeds, but they are less common amongst working/ assistance breeds. I am 5ft 8 inches, and I can barely fit in the bloody space between seats. Fitting my Border Collie in too is impossible.

The UK needs to get into the 21st century. Disabled people have assistance dogs. And money. And those of us with both are voting with our feet. I never fly UK based airlines because they are impossible.

‘DD recently returned from Austria on a plane with a passenger who was accompanied by a Labrador which I assume weighed more than 10kg but it was an anxiety dog. ‘

Just how was it an anxiety dog? Did it make all the people in the same part of the plane anxious?

What if it needs a poo 🤢 no thanks!

You do realise that most healthy adult dogs are toilet trained, and won't wee or poo, unless outdoors, don't you? They would recognise the interior of a plane as being equivalent to a room, so would be extremely unlikely to void in it, unless ill.

That said, I agree with others that the ferry is the best option to use here.

GiraffeLaSophie · 30/09/2023 14:02

Is there a particular reason you want to take your dog with you? Do you think they’ll enjoy it when you get there?

I take my dog on holiday in the UK every year. We are always near the beach (which he loves) and we go to some NT type places so he has a lovely time. He’s also perfectly happy travelling in the car.

I’m just not sure what your dog is going to get out of a trip to Europe, especially if it’s a city break. Plus, I can’t imagine most dogs would enjoy the airport or the actual flight. Would they not be happier in kennels or staying with someone?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/09/2023 14:02

If I got on a plane and I was sat next to someone’s dog I would not be impressed.

Please say this isn’t a thing?

Or if it is, please tell me the dog must be by a window with its owner on the outside of the dog - or better still you have to pay for the whole row if you’re taking an animal on a plane.

Singingintherain23 · 30/09/2023 14:03

I read it as 12kg bag 😂 realised it said dog then thought it must have autocorrect bag to dog. But no, OP actually wants to take a dog onto a plane. No thanks, I don't want a smelly dog next to me the whole flight and get covered in dog hairs!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/09/2023 14:03

A trained guide or hearing dog would obviously be a different thing as it would be trained not to bother the next person.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 30/09/2023 14:05

We flew this summer within the EU with DDog in the cabin and did a ton of research beforehand. 10Kg is the absolute highest weight limit we found (and it’s also size, your dog needs to fit comfortably in the bag under the seat) and that includes bag and blanket etc. DD is 6kg and we flew with an 8kg weight limit, dog, airline bag and blanket were 7.7kg.

You can fly OUT of the uk on several airlines but you cannot fly in with a dog in the cabin, it is not allowed so you will need to find a way back. Trains and ferry’s are of course an option.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/09/2023 14:06

A Swedish friend very recently took her small dog* in the cabin from Stockholm to Majorca.

She says she wouldn’t be able to do the same to the U.K., though - no airline will do it.

*He was apparently extremely well behaved.

People who want to take dogs to Europe usually use train/car/ferry.

whynotwhatknot · 30/09/2023 14:06

i know friends who take their quite small dogs on planes all the time in the US my stepdaughter took her dog on a plane when she moved countries in europe-not uk

😂😂😂😂

I am assuming the owner meant the dog was providing emotional support. DD was pretty surprised. She’s not fond of dogs, but not scared or allergic, and the dog was next to the window, then owner, then DD.

MyDogTails · 30/09/2023 14:07

Truly baffled by this notion.
Someone in my family is allergic to dogs. Does that mean they’d be forced to sit beside a dog for a (say) 3 hour flight?
We need to stop treating dogs as children.
