To want to take my 12kg dog in the plane cabin

BettyBoomer · 30/09/2023 12:13

I’m going to Europe this summer and I’d like to take my dog but I dont want to put the dog in the hold. There are a number of airlines that allow dogs in the cabin if they are under 10kg (KLM, AirFrance, ITA air).

does anyone know of an airline from UK to Europe that would take a 12kg dog?

thanks!

You'll do better to look at driving, ferries and trains. Dogs can't go in cabins of most airplanes of the UK unless they are a (proper!) assistance dog ie Guide Dog, Dog for the Disabled, Hearing Dog etc. Animals for emotional support etc are not recognised for this in the UK as there's no official system to recognise their training.

With the exception of dogs trained for sight, and only those by the RNIB ( do you know how hard it is for people to get one of those? ) not a single assistance dog is "recognised " in the UK? There is no UK based "proper" assistance dog. That includes hearing dogs or "dogs for the disabled" (whatever those are? ). My dog detects when my PTSD kicks in, because an attack can and does literally stop my heart. In the UK he isn't recognised as doing anything useful!

Oh dear. I'm gone down a complete rabbit hole of googling animals on planes 😂

I’m honestly confused by the horror surrounding the idea of dogs on a flight, you very rarely know they’re there, they smell far less then the majority of passengers on a flight, they’re in a bag under the seat, I have never smelt dog shit on a plane, there’s no dog hair everywhere.

Dogs aren’t just sat next to you on the plane pressing the call button for a cheeky g+t before take off. They’re in a bag under the seat. There is no dog hair or slobber to contend with… fucking hell I shed more hair on a flight then you would ever find of a dogs

Looking at airline policies - it’s pets in special pet bags (where the bag counts towards the weight restriction) and sometimes restricted to one animal per flight.

I don’t think it’s actually ok on pretty much airline to rock up with a dog that’s not in a carrier and have it sit on the seat.

ŁadnaPogoda · 30/09/2023 14:10

I flew from LHR to Central Europe with my cat in the cabin. He was in his hold-all under the seat. You would not have known he was there. Flying back to U.K. this summer was impossible as there was a ban on pets flying into U.K. even in the hold. We flew to Brussels and then got picked up by a car and driver for the four hour drive home. The cat was fine.

Truly baffled by this notion.
Someone in my family is allergic to dogs. Does that mean they’d be forced to sit beside a dog for a (say) 3 hour flight?
We need to stop treating dogs as children.

Yes, their allergy means they'd be forced to sit next to the dog /s.

Don't be so silly, if they had an allergy the cabin crew would make sure they sat as far away from the dog as possible.

What's your dog going to do in Europe? Woof at the Sistine chapel?

Arf at the Eiffel Tower...

It'll behave better than some humans undoubtedly.

I understand people's attachment to their pets and their desire not to leave them is a form of anxiety.

That said, these pet owners need to think about the well-being of their animals and look at different destinations or ways of getting there.

I don't want your dog in the cabin!

Lots of people don't want lots of stuff.

It's irrelevant.

What matters is the airlines conditions of carriage etc.

‘DD recently returned from Austria on a plane with a passenger who was accompanied by a Labrador which I assume weighed more than 10kg but it was an anxiety dog. ‘

Just how was it an anxiety dog? Did it make all the people in the same part of the plane anxious?

And there comes the "ableist" post. Took longer than I expected....

StarDolphins · 30/09/2023 14:11

I would absolutely love to be sat by a dog in a plane!

However, I just don’t think you’d be able to do this, think it would need to be a ferry op.

PricklyPineapple · 30/09/2023 14:12

You can take small dogs out of the UK in the cabin (I think up to 8kg for most airlines) but you can’t bring any dogs back into the UK in the cabin due to UK laws unfortunately

Ascendant15 · 30/09/2023 14:00

With respect to you, that is bullshit and Google. First of all, have you seen the average space on the floor in front of ANYONE? You'd be bloody lucky to fit a small handbag. Secondly, the size of dog is not related to function - the majority of dogs capable of training to assistance level tend to medium/ larger sizes because they tend to be working strains. I'm not saying there aren't smaller breeds, but they are less common amongst working/ assistance breeds. I am 5ft 8 inches, and I can barely fit in the bloody space between seats. Fitting my Border Collie in too is impossible.

The UK needs to get into the 21st century. Disabled people have assistance dogs. And money. And those of us with both are voting with our feet. I never fly UK based airlines because they are impossible.

@Ascendant15 No need to be cross with me - here is a link to the CAA website if you don't believe me.

It wouldn't bother me at all. I have a dog, but am overall ambivalent about them.

I'd definitely prefer to sit near a dog than a baby. Much less noise.

I don't want your dog in the cabin!

I don’t want your misbehaving child kicking my chair the entire flight, your insanely strong perfume that scents out the entire cabin or your phone playing music without headphones. 🤔

Ok so next time I’m on a flight where the announcement is ‘we have someone with a severe nut allergy on board today, please do not open any nut based products whilst on the plane’ I’ll just make sure I’m not sitting near them and open them anyway??

fucking ridiculous comment!! Sit far away like all the air isn’t constantly circulated!! 🤣

Not true. Please see the CAA link. You can travel with an assistance dog.

Not sure about the shetland ponies though!!!

Toddlerteaplease · 30/09/2023 14:15

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece no I wouldn't want that either. I do t have kids. But if I did, they would behave.. 😂

Muchtoomuchtodo · 30/09/2023 14:15

I have only ever flown to / from the uk and thankfully have never come across a dog or cat on any of my flights.

i am allergic to most dog and cat hair so would be seriously unimpressed to sit in a cabin with one with recirculating air and I would be pretty unwell by the end of the flight.

Ascendant15 · 30/09/2023 14:16

I didn't say that I was cross with you - I said, and I was correct that "here's the Google answer " demonstrates no knowledge of reality. And that is true. Most people struggleto fit into plane seats, never mind those of us with disabilities travelling with assistance dogs. That is my reality. Not Google.

Westfacing · 30/09/2023 14:17

A few years ago a woman in the US took her miniature horse as her emotional support on an internal flight.

I don't know how 'miniature' a horse can be but surely they're pretty big!

If their allergy to a dog is as severe as a peanut allergy (this is vanishingly rare) then they'd need to get the next flight.

Otherwise it's a case of taking an antihistamine and sitting further away.

You mean the dog can get on the next flight, right?
