To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

The economy, immigration, crime, health, taxation, the environment, pensions, education.... these are the things that people care about.

Trans rights are way, way down the list for the vast, vast majority of people. On MN there seems to be some sort of weird cult who think otherwise, and who also think that the tories - who fucking hate women as they do most people who aren't middle aged, rich white people - are the party to vote for.

Edited

Wanting women to have their own spaces and sports really is the opposite of a weird cult

Unless you think people can actually change their sex?

Now that would be odd

The only people who are in danger of forcing her out of her job are her constituents. They seem to love her so I wouldn’t worry about her.

You implied that Rosie Duffield should resign as a Labour MP if she was still unhappy with being bullied or ignored by Starmer - it would be quite a gamble for her to stand as an independent candidate at the next election.

itsgettingweird · 30/09/2023 19:02

But eastern they have their own sports. Sports bodies have made changes along the gender debate Vs sex. That won't change.

Sports NGB make their own rules.

Who do you think will be the leader of the Tory Party in 18 months

That's speculation - Starmer is leader of the Labour Party now - presumably you are equally horrified and open-mouthed at the thought of Starmer being prime minister?

You presume wrong @Clavinova. I, like most of the country just want to see the Tories gone. I have no love for Starmer. He wants my approval he'll have to earn it as PM.

In 13 years this Tory government have wrecked the country and women's rights and services. They put Self ID on the table. They put rapists into women's hospital wards and prisons. Where they sexually assaulted and raped the vulnerable women there. This whole shitshow happened under the Tories.

Even now, they can't issue necessary guidance to schools to keep both children and staff safe. They've refused to commit to keeping men out of women's prisons. They even put Trans back into the Conversion Therapy Bill.

I know that the Tories are shit on this. I'll wait and see what the next PM does and then judge it.

I didn’t. You either misunderstood or misinterpreted what I said.

The day can’t come soon enough. The U.K. is fed up with this rancid, toxic zombie govt. Those who support it, I guess you have skin in the game, there isn’t really a logical argument otherwise, as this thread shows.

Why did you exclaim shock, horror at Penny Mordaunt's remarks if you are happy to go along with 'trans women are women'?

EasternStandard · 30/09/2023 19:11

‘Skin in the game’

Nope. I haven’t see much on where Labour’s extra funding will come from to make these changes people are after and I despair at their gender ideology

Lonelycrab · 30/09/2023 19:11

Better vote Tory than eastern. Go you.

Go you back.

What extra funding? Taxes are at their highest since records began, they won’t be spending more money, just spending the same amount sensibly.

But you are happy with ever increasing NHS waiting list, unsafe schools and hospitals, record number of foodbanks, people choosing between eating and heating, the Courts record backlog etc?

You've misunderstood @Clavinova

I'm not happy to go along with it. It's one of the reasons we need the Tories gone. As I said, I'll wait and see what the next PM does before I judge. If he continues down the Tory Trans path, I'll be well fucked off with his party too.

@itsgettingweird I'm not going to vote Tory either. But just because you and I are going to way up all of the issues this country faces, it's doesn't mean everybody will. If you think that the general public don't make knee jerk reactions based on headlines, then you overestimate them. Just look what they did in the last GE.

Well, she was clearly feeling ignored by Starmer, hence her tweet, and I see that she reported Lloyd Russell-Moyle to the party’s chief whip only last month;

But you are happy with ever increasing NHS waiting list, unsafe schools and hospitals, record number of foodbanks, people choosing between eating and heating, the Courts record backlog etc?

If there’s no more money it’s not going to change. There’s no point looking back to another time as an indication of what will happen.

Look at the policies suggested and, in particular, the funding and taxing side not the promises. The taxation is very similar from both parties, further borrowing is out.

I also think given the huge population changes we’re seeing the five year extra time on net zero stuff makes sense.

1 in 11 in NHS by 2036. That is huge

I really can’t abide Starmer but I was thinking of a list I’d like to see

Drop the small fry policies with low benefit as they’re likely to do more harm than good to the sector - VAT (and non dom will just make people leave earlier)

Legislate against gender ID

Really consider mass displacement of people and how that will be handled. Don’t just say we’ll make it easy and process faster as we will have very high numbers

Energy security - recognise we will need to be strong with oil & gas as we transition because the world will demand it of us

I don’t care about cars, changes to IHT, abolishing Lords (costly, time consuming and likely to benefit more extreme politics)

The boom time was the equivalent to a credit card spree you pay for later. Regardless of the party at the time it won’t come back.

I think we’re in for a tough time but either party could concentrate on the above and I’d like to hear about it

Is that YouGov? I've just checked the tables - 21% of 2019 Conservative voters answered 'don't know' [who they would vote for] in the survey - and will Reform UK really get 6% of the vote? Is there still a year to go before the next election?

Anewest · 30/09/2023 19:35

The Conservatives could remove all speed limits, offer to pay my energy bills until the day I die and offer me a choice of an unlimited amount of the finest red, white or rose wine running from one of my taps at no cost, and I still wouldn't vote for them.

Oh I agree.

But I also think that there is an element of the country learning from that past.

I'm hoping enough for a change in direction with the party in power.

I don't think it'll be the landslide the polls predict. But people like a Braverman aren't even being hailed by her far right supporters. Despite her rhetoric they are saying she's useless. Ok, because she isn't being racist enough and her Rwanda policy has failed. But a vote for reform (who won't win - I'd emigrate if they did! ) is at least one less vote for conservative!

SerendipityJane · 30/09/2023 19:39

As noted previously we have sent more home secretaries to Rwanda than asylum seekers. However, Bravermans problem seems to be that she is saying all the things she would like to do if she was in power. Almost as if no one has had the guts to tell her she is Home fucking Secretary.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/09/2023 19:41

Legistlate against gender ID.
Why doesn't Sunak and his "at least the Conservatives know what a woman is" party for that now? Before they're voted out @EasternStandard?
