To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

Pro-car rhetoric, not necessarily any real action. The real war on motorists is when it comes to paying for parking. Just make it that wherever a charge is made for parking, be it public or private land, you have to be able to pay by a credit or debit card at a machine within 100 yards of where you park, or no charge at all can be made, no clamping, no penalties.

Does no one on mumsnet have a car with a speed limiter or cruise control? Unless you're driving something older than 10 years old most cars have this.
Set it to 20mph fgs.
Also you can't put a fag paper between Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak- and that's what Labour want you to think, completely disgusting and a betrayal of Labour principles. With the "war on woke" looking increasingly like a war on anyone who isn't a white or rich man.
Thank god I can vote SNP.

Errrr my set speed cancels when I hit the brake. So won’t work in a congested area - which it will be when we are inching along at 18mph to avoid another fine.

But don’t worry if you vote for Labour they are planning to ‘charge by the mile’ too so that will ensure the only people that can afford to drive will be multi millionaires. Like Starmer and his Islington friends.. .Therefore the roads are likely to be gloriously empty. Not quite sure what happens to actual working people but heyho

No I don’t have a speed limiter or cruise control. I don’t have a chauffeur or a man to walk in front with a red flag either.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2023 17:11

Sunak on the other hand, practically impoverished 🚁

Limiter is probably my most used accessory. And it's not broken and stays on when I brake.

However I know from years of reading MN that you take your life into your own hands if you even suggest people should not exceed the speed limit. In fact I suspect the one thing that will stop us leaving the ECHR is when people realised it would remove the basic human right to speed as you like.

You can drive as fast as you like, just accept the consequences.

Tories were happy to pollute the waters even more

HoL voted against it

Wasn't Brexit supposed to rid us of unelected bureaucrats ?

Frabbits · 29/09/2023 17:24

If you are unable to regulate your speed - at any speed - you are a shit driver. All this bollocks about having to constantly watch your speedo is just laughable.

No it isn’t. This just denying the obvious. Why do people do this?

Well yes. It was easy to know your speed when I passed my test. It was as fast as a man with a red flag could walk.

Robbiesraft · 29/09/2023 17:27

Bloody Uxbridge. First they gave us cock first, think later (if at all) Johnson. Then they gave a desperate man, slimey Sunak a cracking (crackpot?) idea to keep the tories in power (possibly).

I know Labour is the gift that keeps giving to the conservatives.
Bloody Sadiq and his ULEZ roll out. He is doing the Conservative campaigning for them.

VimtoVimto · 29/09/2023 17:31

Well the reality of their actions bears no resemblance to their actions.

Sunak et al certainly didn’t have much experience of government, and Yvette Cooper has wiped the floor with successive Tory Home Secretaries.

DuncinToffee · 29/09/2023 17:44

The Tories held on to Uxbridge with just under 500 votes, quite the victory

Sunak was chancellor and had years of experience before becoming PM.
Surrounded by very experienced politicians.

I am terrified of Raynor and the opposition half wits getting the keys to the country. How can anyone seriously not feel very scared of that prospect?? Just look at them. A Star Wars bar of incompetence!

But still a victory in an area extremely pro labour.

It wasn’t pro Labour, presumably you’ve forgotten who its retiring MP was. The majority was massively reduced. It had Tory MPs for 107 years. Either your Google’s broken or you don’t know how to use it.

Lastchancechica · 29/09/2023 17:52

London was massively pro Labour

Uxbridge is extremely pro Labour? How?

It's been a safe Tory seat for 13 years, only recently became less safe.

Out of the eight electoral wards only Uxbridge South regularly elects Labour councillors.

Uxbridge is a Tory London suburb. Has been for years.

Well he's done them more electoral good than Jeremy Corbyn ever did.
