To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

I’ve no idea about gearing. I drive an automatic anyway.

But what you say about driving at 20mph is just plainly wrong. You either don’t drive; or you drive at 20mph on roads with little chance of being done for speeding, so you don’t watch v carefully; or you know this is shite but spout it anyway. Try driving at 10mph and not do 11pm, or 15mph and not doing 16mph. It’s obvious to any driver that small changes, including gradient, have a bigger proportional effect on speed at lower speeds. It’s common sense.

Now you are just being silly - no-one's going to get a ticket for 21mph. I find it an absolute piece of piss to drive close enough to 20mph that I am not risking a ticket, as does anyone with average driving skills.

I got a ticket for 31mph once

Lastchancechica · 29/09/2023 16:38

You would need to crawl along at 18mph to be on the safe side.

Hmm nice insulting there, but if you make claims about a recession people will ask about it. It’s no small deal to be in one

I didn't. The word recession wasn't in my original post, and there was a reason for that. Those of you who brought it up did so in spite of what I wrote, not because of.

In would imagine that's as true as all the other nonsense you have posted, but if it is true, please post a picture suitably redacted, otherwise I call bullshit (again).
Perhaps you're unaware but there's a long running campaign against this lie all over the internet.

I can’t see the Tories getting anywhere near to winning, despite all this desperate scrabbling around trying to find new culture wars to fight. They’re a split, disunited party now, the one thing that you could have said about Johnson was that he brought some sense of unity and (however deeply misguided) optimism. Sunak has none of that. Half his own party are out to get him, and it’s obvious that his only trick left is to fan the flames of division and culture wars- there’s nothing positive at all that he can point to. The more he tries to appeal to the far right, the more votes he will lose to the centre. The moderate Tories I know (several in my family) will not vote for them this coming election because they are becoming more and more like the BNP these days.

I’d say most people are thoroughly fed up with the way this govt is scrabbling around, completely rudderless now and people aren’t falling for this distraction technique thing anymore. I’m a high mileage driver and couldn’t give a monkeys about 20mph limits, they’re fine. Country is in a mess, things are barely functioning now and it’s time for a change. Corruption is also at an all time high and I think people notice that too.

So the Tory vote will be split with Reform/reclaim/unicorn party or whatever that lot are called these days, and Sunak and the Tories in this current, abysmal form will thankfully be no longer.

The thing is we are several threads in now and no one can even pinpoint what Labour stands for.
Much less explain the vision it has for the country in the future apart from building all over our esteemed green belt.

No - you have refused to listen when told a lot of actual Labour policies.
Loads of green fields are being built on near me - now.
"Greenbelt" areas can include scrapyards just for one example.

You’ve been told by several posters.

I know someone done for 23mph.

This is a futile argument, anyway, because you don’t want to accept that straying 10% (I know it’s a guideline, not the law) over a lower threshold is easier to do than a proportional excess at higher speeds. To everyone else it’s blindingly obvious.

Yep.

This is Sunak's problem really. He's never had a really significant support base in either the parliamentary or wider party and essentially got the gig by default. The Tories haven't managed to coalesce round a PM for a lengthy period for over three decades, and the circumstances just aren't conducive to it now. They can't stay unified and there's nothing to stay unified for.

It also really doesn't help that even some of the old hands have woken up and smelled the coffee, and are planning their exit. People like Ben Wallace and Graham Brady have a huge amount of political experience, and not to have full access to that kind of person makes leadership a lot harder. Obviously Johnson having purged the party in 2019 has an impact here too.

No everything that has been posted on here has been a wish list not policy or labour vision.

The green belt here is magnificent and loved by all that come here, and not a scrap yard.

How sad that is your only experience of nature, no wonder you don’t care about the huge loss of diversity, green space
and wildlife. It would be the greatest act of vandalism this country has ever seen, that’s why I can’t being myself to imagine Labour actually getting in!!
It’s rank hypocrisy to talk about ‘green pledges’ in the next breath promise to build all over the countryside. They are going to wreck our beautiful country.

They're dropping like flies now. Those who think the Tories are going to win: why are so many of their own MPs quitting?

DuncinToffee · 29/09/2023 16:52

Sunak lies

https://x.com/SaulStaniforth/status/1707707158584786975?s=20

Sunak says imposing a blanket 20mph limit is not right. The interviewer points out its not blanket. Sunak ignores him & repeats it. The interviewer again says its not a blanket ban. Sunak says thats not quite right. The interviewer points out language is important. Not to Sunak!

BIossomtoes · 29/09/2023 16:52

That ship’s already sailed. The current iteration of Tories have seen to that.

itsmyp4rty · 29/09/2023 16:53

They don't police the 30 mph roads. What's the point of them making it 20mph when people go as fast as they like anyway. I don't even drive but I think drivers crawling along at 18 mph is ridiculous.

I think the Tories will get in again. They 'lost' Boris who could have been their downfall and Labour doesn't seem to know who or what it is. I think Sunak will end up being more popular than Starmer. Not that I've ever voted for the Tories, but that's what I think.

Lastchancechica · 29/09/2023 16:53

It’s so sad to imagine what the U.K. might look like in 5 years from now with London Labour metropolitans ripping up our beloved countryside 😭

Do you care about sewage in the water? The use of pesticides that kills bees?

Sorry, don’t know how that happened.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2023 17:01

He also said that which parcels of land fall under green belt rules is sometimes illogical, giving an example of homes being built on a playing field rather than a car park because the car park was technically within the green belt whereas the field was not.

"This is not about disrespecting the green belt," he added.
"That is also part of our plan for rebuilding the economy, because for every hundred thousand houses that we can build across the United Kingdom, then broadly speaking, that's 1% of GDP that goes up."
Save our car parks. Wink
