To intensely dislike Keir Starmer

1000 replies

LemonyTicket · 27/09/2023 00:42

I can't stand Tories.
The current Tories are the worst

But I still intensely dislike Keir Starmer and will probably vote Green.

I find him phony, with no vision, like a terrible 6th form prefect. And to be honest his whole front bench are dreadful. Wes Streeting nauseates me.

Is it just me?

I don’t know how anyone who’s witnessed Johnson can possibly say that about Starmer with a straight face.

Labour are notoriously terrible with the country’s economics. Pouring money we don’t have into substandard public services.

Incorrect.

CurlewKate · 28/09/2023 10:25

@Cerealforever
"I don’t like him. He just comes across as a man without convictions. He’ll say things you can tell he blatantly does not believe, just because that lobby group are shouting loudly."

I can only assume you were in a coma during the Johnson years....

IClaudine · 28/09/2023 10:44

Fightyouforthatpie · 28/09/2023 10:20

Incorrect.

It is indeed. An example:

In 1998, half of all those on inpatient lists waited an average of 15.2 weeks for a hospital appointment.

By the time Labour left office this had fallen to just over four weeks.

in 2004 Labour introduced an 18-week limit on total time between GP referral and treatment in outpatients (non-admitted care) or inpatients (admitted care).

By the time Labour left office around 90 per cent of admitted patients and 98 per cent of non-admitted patients were being seen within 18 weeks.

Then what happened? The Tory government spaffed £1.5 billion on "reforming" the NHS. Reforms which have been unpicked in recent years. And what has happened to waiting times?

Have you ever thought about putting your, ahem, talents to use in writing dystopian fiction? You are doing a sterling job of it here.

Tbf plenty seem to be doing it irl already. Given a recent Labour councillor apology statement not unlike a re education blurb and women denied a space to get rape support because men can’t join.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 28/09/2023 10:53

Not a fan of the Red Tories but literally anyone would be better than another term of tory rule. They are completely and utterly incompetent (if not currupt) and incapable of running a local book club, let alone a country.

I've been googling conservative successes over the last 13 years and even their supporters struggle to name 10 things they've done well, resorting to highlighting things like political realignment, English localism [whatever that is] and policies that haven't actually been implemented [Building Better, Building Beautiful for example].

But I think this extract from an article in The Spectator sums it up nicely....

"What do the Tories have to show for their years in office?

Brutal cuts were made to public services, and then partially reversed. NHS performance has steadily deteriorated. A rapprochement with China was attempted, dropped, and replaced with a newly hawkish approach. The tax burden grew even as the debt reached new heights. Cuts to immigration were pledged, ignored, abandoned, and eventually replaced by promises to increase it [and now cuts have been pledged again]. Brexit was finally achieved, at the cost of significant disruption to Northern Ireland’s place in the union [and to the economy].

The party achieved political realignment, becoming the natural home of pensioners at the cost of alienating young people, put off by tuition fee increases and spiralling housing costs.

Years of emphasising the deficit and debt as the most important issues for the government were tossed aside the moment it was convenient to do so. In 2010, the Conservative manifesto promised to set up an independent Office for Budget Responsibility ‘to ensure that no Labour government can ever attempt to bankrupt our public finances again’. The less said about that, the better.

So as the Conservative party reflects on its time in power, its legacy is clear: the party has spent 13 years running on the spot, engaged in nothing more than the noble game of keeping Labour out of office, and the occasional spot of decline management. With an extended period in the wilderness beckoning, can any of its members genuinely look back and say that the political outcomes of the last 13 years reflect the undoubted electoral triumphs won?

Letsgetouttahere2023 · 28/09/2023 10:55

His policy on taxing education, his lack of clarity, his ill thought through begrudging policies which punishes the middle classes and benefits the ultra rich.

He needs to go.

Can't stand tories but at present with his education anti aspiration ideas, tories will have my vote

I never understand this philosophy. Because Johnson was a disingenuous liar it means no one else can be?

Johnson was the worst prime minister in history and was unfit for office, but at least people got what they voted for.

Starmer is a complete mirage.

You can't stand the Tories but you'll vote for an ultra right wing xenophobic government that wants to punish poor people, disabled people and vulnerable people? Rightio.

Ultra right wing 😂😂

CurlewKate · 28/09/2023 11:39

@Teateaandmoretea "Ultra right wing 😂😂"

Yes. Anybody with a scrap of political nous can see that Braverman manoeuvring for the leadership of the party.

Everyonesliverlovesparvo · 28/09/2023 12:16

I actually think the Conservatives will win the next election. It’s like the country has some weird kind of Stockholm syndrome.

BloodyHellKen · 28/09/2023 12:19

He admitted he believed 0.1% of women have a penis which equates to the same thing - i.e. complete nonsense because as anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows, no women have a penis.

Teddleshon · 28/09/2023 12:26

@BloodyHellKen Yes, I believe that left the equivalent of a town the size of Hitchin populated entirely by women with penises. A low point even for Sir Keir.

It's amazing that anyone could think they look credible after that 😂😂

In order to win a majority Labour need to appeal to more than just one socio economic group, and demonising private schools and everyone that works and uses them is not a smart move.

Except they're weren't demonising them.

They're were saying that a private school is primarily an entity which provides a service (education) in exchange for money (school fees). That's a business, and paying a business for service is something which should incur VAT.

Now if the private school who currently charges £20k per year was to setup a separate entity which was actually charitable in nature, and have its customers pay £2k/year to that entity and £18k/year to the main business, then VAT shouldn't be charged on the £2k/year.

Highandlows · 28/09/2023 12:48

Ultra right wing. Ridiculous and clueless. Thank god the majority are not this deluded.

This type of comment horrifies the electorate. People should travel a bit more and read about the international current issues and other countries views on them .

bombastix · 28/09/2023 12:51

I pay these fees and couldn't give a damn about Labour's proposal. Anyone who is sending their kids to these schools can easily afford it.

Anyway, I am rather more concerned with the amount of tax I now pay and the low level of public service I get compared to 10 years ago

Highandlows · 28/09/2023 12:53

@bombastix that is BS speak for yourselves.

bombastix · 28/09/2023 13:11

You are scraping along paying private school fees? Not for you then is it?

EasternStandard · 28/09/2023 13:17

Regardless of using state I can’t say I’m excited by dc being taken out of schools or schools folding due to a gimmick policy. It may give some vindictive pleasure I guess

bombastix · 28/09/2023 13:20

I have the worlds tiniest violin for people who send their children for private education and then say this is unreasonable. It is fine with me.

Send your children elsewhere if you are that on your uppers. Private education is s great privilege.

Do you think that a private school's primary purpose is to provide a service (education) in exchange for money?

If so, why do you think they shouldn't be treated like any other business - with VAT due on the cost of their services?

This isn't an attack on private schools, it's removing a tax loophole.

I find it quite vindictive, it’s not a great trait.

Sure you’re home and hosed with wealth but others will have dc who have to leave friends, schools shut, or with SEN where parents have thrown everything at it.

This feels a particularly low thing to want for others.

You do have privilege, wanting the above though, eugh
