To intensely dislike Keir Starmer

1000 replies

LemonyTicket · 27/09/2023 00:42

I can't stand Tories.
The current Tories are the worst

But I still intensely dislike Keir Starmer and will probably vote Green.

I find him phony, with no vision, like a terrible 6th form prefect. And to be honest his whole front bench are dreadful. Wes Streeting nauseates me.

Is it just me?

Whilst the trans debate is huge and people will argue with my points here, I need to say this.

I am a single mum who works full time and works bloody hard as many of us do. I am a teacher. I have a disability. I have a parent with dementia. These are my priorities for a government and the current lot are abysmal at all of these. I am voting labour as they are the best party for women who struggle to survive. And yes, to the inevitable 'there won't be a place for women soon', I get that. But now. Immediately. Today - I need these things to be sorted to survive and then be able to fight the trans issue. The Tory treatment of women is terrible - real women, women right now need a better life and opportunity.
I can't be a one issue voter - not until we have a party on the side of all women. Women like me who need help as they can't survive.

Mumsnet always strikes me as a centre right forum. Never seen anything to suggest it's pro Labour.

I'd respectfully disagree. Any politics thread descends almost immediately to conservative voters = evil scum type insults. It stifles debate because any opposing views are subject to a nasty and personal pile on.

There was one thread about six months ago that was a breath of fresh air where both sides of the political spectrum exchanged views in a pleasant way. Otherwise it's pretty much an echo chamber.

Yes they do tend to start like that. The GE one recently was the same

Why? Because he can’t magically print money from nowhere. News flash.

This. Our debt is absolutely enormous and the yield on newly-issued gilts hit its highest level in 15 years in the summer. The era of cheap government borrowing is well and truly over. Big hikes in public spending could trigger another bond market meltdown like the Trussonomics unfunded tax cuts.

The mythical 'tax the rich' isn't going to plug the gap. The 50% tax rate Osborne introduced actually cost more than it raised. Lots of the high earners are internationally mobile so you risk them moving to the US or Europe. Whack up corporation tax and you chase out businesses and risk jobs and income tax receipts.

There is no easy economic fix here.

As usual poor people have to pay.

I ask this gently. What on earth do you suppose Labour will do for you?

BadHairAtFestivals · 27/09/2023 00:56

I first came across Keir Starmer when he was DPP. His views and opions were incredibly reasonable and well thought out. I don't necessarliy think he's the best leader that there is but he's a decent man. I hate the Tories so much that I'd rather a decent man tbh. Tories are vile.

Second this. As DPP he did do a lot for women, too.

I am sorry to say you seem to be holding out for something to rescue you, but Labour are not your saviours. If they crash the economy you could end up in a worse situation.

And this. This is a reality check for those who wouldn’t vote Labour because of trans issues.

also - the Tories basically legalised rape

everetting · 27/09/2023 19:42

Starmer is a centrist.
The conservatives have trashed the economy, totally trashed it.

Yes, absolutely.

But never mind. Liz Truss made it. 🤣

GarlicGrace · 27/09/2023 19:46

Whether I like a politician is a seriously poor guide to whether I'd like their actions in office! The only PM I would actually want to share a dinner table with is David Cameron 😂

Re Starmer: he is a morally-driven man with compassion and a reasonable grasp of issues facing a UK government. I think he hasn't been helped by the amount of antipathy within his party - they always have a massive battle going on between "very Left" and "electable", but it got worse when Corbyn lost out to him.

I'm very angry with his pussyfooting around women's rights being connected to our sex, and failure to take a position on Brexit. But I guess his Labour is the best option out of a depressing range of choices.

I'd still rather go for a drink with Cameron, though.

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/09/2023 19:46

@Lastchancechica a damn sight more than the tories ever will. And I won't have to put up with millions being handed to the rich and elite at the expense of the majority of people (inheritance tax etc.).
I am pretty well up on politics so I know what will be better for me and women like me

Brexit threads are usually the same - very occasionally there is an outbreak of reasoned debate but mostly it’s a pile on and if anyone admits to voting leave they are bigoted racist stupid thick gammons.

The trouble is we have a lot of binary thinking and mud slinging nonsense on both sides.

How is it a reality check? Who says life for that poster will be any different, never mind better, under a Labour govt?
Where does the Labour are the best party for women who struggle to survive notion come from? especially since they insist men can be women if they fancy it

BIossomtoes · 27/09/2023 19:49

What on earth do you suppose Labour will do for you?

What have the Tories done for her over the last 13 years? Apart from worsening every public service she relies on.

Oh yeah Brexit threads. Fairly rabid

VimtoVimto · 27/09/2023 19:49

Why is Labour trashing the economy a problem yet Liz Truss doing the same is ok?

Better than the current government. It’s going to be pathetically easy.
